Fix for Faulty Fuel Gauge-Maruti Esteem 1997

Friends, the fuel gauge of my Esteem 1997 model has gone wonky.
Irresoective of the level of fuel in the tank it shows all sort of wild readings, from zero with a full tank to 3/4 for a near empty one.
As a result, I've got to rely on the trip meter which I set to zero every time I fill ,multiplying the no. of litres filled by 10 to get an approx idea when I should fuel up again-a troublesome method.
Owners may recall that in this model Maruti had fitted a gauge which was supposed to show the fuel leveleven with the engine off.
I've enquired from a few garages, from MSM okhla to a couple of MASS 7 also from some other workshops.
They all say that the complete assy consisting of the fuel gauge mech in the tank as well as the fuel pump would have to be changed @ a cost of Rs8500/-
I can't spend that amt of money.
Is there a workaround to this prob?
TIA.

Why the fuel pump? Only the float assembly needs to be changed. Look for a good independent garage, You can fix this at 1/4 the cost of what MAS quoted you.

Re: Fix for Faulty Fuel Gauge-Maruti Esteem 1997

Had the same issue with my 97 Esteem's fuel gauge. I knew what was the culprit, since Esteem had this issue in almost ever vehicle prior to face lift on Esteem '98.

Got a new float in the fuel tank, for 800 Bucks, and the issue has resolved
completely.

You might want to go this way, rather than giving up 8000/-.

Thanks for the prompt response, guys.
Will look for some mechanic who can replace just the float.

you have lower the tank and install the float switch.

looks something like this.

PS Tip: you have to lower the tank and labour is almost the same. so why not opt for a complete tank clean. I am sure you have not done this before.

Thanks, Sir Alec(Queen of the Hills).
No, I've never had the fuel tank cleaned.
Since I have been replacing the fuel filter every service, is there any need for this?

Re: Fix for Faulty Fuel Gauge-Maruti Esteem 1997

Filter does not let the dirty fuel from tank to carb or injection system through pump and fuel lines.

But tank over the time will develop rust and tanks that stores fuels at station are also not clean either. So we clean the tank once in a while for sediments etc.

This is also a part of regular maintainance, Also have you seen military vehicle tanks? They paint the date when the tank was cleaned or when the next cleaning is due.
