Re: VW Polo - Maintenance and Service cost and dos/don'ts

I have been given the below quotation for 2019 Ameo HL+ TDI DSG. I really never understand the billing format of VW.
They have identified two issues:
1. DSG Cable Connector to be repaired (Apparently new one costs Rs. 70K)
2. Brake Pads to be replaced

I have their AMC where some percentage of discount is entitled on part change. They have shown the discount however not given one. Need help to know if the charges are correct. What is Machine Charges, that too Rs. 7k?

Maybe the lathe machining charges, where they will need to skim the back drums. Other than that, I do not know why you need to machine anything else. They are removing and replacing the rotors, so they do not need any skimming. The machining may only be for the rear drums, which is also through the roof.
Local lathe shops charge around, 600/800 for one drum, 7k is a huge jump. In case of the DSG cable, it is called a bowden cable. These are available for 6k to 7k online on Boodmo, if they are referring to any other cable, then I might be wrong. Hope this helps.

Happy Motoring!

[quote=VWAllstar;5867833] Rip off. I did a brake job myself on my Polo yesterday. The machining(turning) of rotors(two) cost me Rs. 1200. Mine is a small town but it should cost you no more than 3000 anywhere in India. Hardly do you need to turn drums as they do not normally get scored. The brake system in VW is made/supplied by TVS-Girling and they cost much less than what appears on your bill. A good parts store will have everything for you to do the job. My suggestion would be to get the cable work done at VW but get the brakes done by a good FNG. If you want to do it yourself, there is Youtube. It's a straightforward job and perhaps the easiest when it comes to car care. However, you need tools and have to jack up the car. Personal safety involved, mind you.

Re: VW Polo - Maintenance and Service cost and dos/don'ts

I just picked up a Polo GT TSI.

For the life of me I cannot find in the manual :

1) A list of fluid specs and quantities to be used along with bulb types

2) A service schedule with list of consumables and parts to be inspected/replaced etc.

Can someone share these with me ?

It seems like owners are being pushed to rely on the ASS without our "Show us where it's written in the manual" escape plan.

All the previous cars I have owned have a service table towards the end.

VW seem to have dropped this vital information. Quite a while ago, too: I don't think it is in my 2014GT TDI handbook.

That sucks. The service schedule I can deal with since we all know the general stuff that needs to be done. But for the life of me I can't believe that they left out fluid volumes from the booklet.

I'm not sure that they did that. I'm guessing that some capacities, such as engine oil, would be among the general specifications. I can't immediately get the book from the car and search.

I couldn't find it. Mostly just info on how to top up or fill correctly, stuff like that.

Re: VW Polo - Maintenance and Service cost and dos/don'ts

I have an issue in my 2011 Polo 1.6 MPI. The coolant level drops to almost zero within a month of filling up. I can't see any leak below the car and no visible leak in the engine bay either. What could be the issue?

I had a similar and more severe issue. My tank was emptying after a 25-30 Km drive.

1) My Oil Cooler assembly was damaged and needed replacement. Oil and coolant were mixing here.
2) Radiator had leakages and coolant was leaking form there too. In this case, it was leaking coolant was evaporating. Check for color marks on the radiator after lifting the car on a lift.

Check engine oil color & level on dipstick. A blown gasket can let the coolant mix with oil. Another thing, hope you are using proper coolant. Only water or improper mix can lead to evaporation of the liquid due to engine and ambience heat.

Zero within a month of filling up points to something serious. Like saket suggested check if the engine oil and coolant are mixing. The engine oil will look like a creamy milkshake. There can be multiple reasons why this can happen. But let's get to that after you verify the engine oil state.

There must a major leak/problem for the coolant in the expansion tank to drop to zero within a month of topping up. You need to get to the bottom of the issue.

I had a slow decrease in coolant level on my i20. The level used to drop around 200ml every 1000 kms. Service center could not identify the leak. Finally, after a lot of searching, I found the leak to be in the EGR hose. It was a pin hole leak which opened up only when the coolant system was pressurized after the engine heated up. The dribbling coolant fell on hot engine case and vaporized leaving no trace. And there was no leak when the engine turned off due to the water pump not running. After replacing the hose, the level has been steady since last 2000 kms.

Also check your heater re-circulation hose apart from other suggestions posted here. Is your AC cooling efficiently?

Re: VW Polo - Maintenance and Service cost and dos/don'ts

Does anyone know what it would cost to touch up the front and rear bumpers of the Polo at the ASC vs outside? Have many small nicks over the years and want to freshen up the paint. I'm also slightly worried about matching the paint color properly - hence wondering if I should just do it at the ASC. Colour is Reflex Silver.
