BTW which route will we take ?
NH45 or NH4 to Salem ? Are there any other route ?
Try it man. You may like the drives again. Ofcourse nothing beats the twisties.

We will work out the route details after a final plan is put up.

Sorry for the typo, I meant Pondy, not Mahabalipuram. Is it still ECR beyond Pondy or is it NH?

It is SH - State highway.

Technically that highway goes all the way to Nagercoil, Kanyakumari..

Originally, the ECR project was to upgrade the road from Chennai to Pondicherry. The scope now has been been extended all the way to Thoothukudi. I think it is complete in bits and pieces upto Ramnad. The Ramnad-Thoothukudi stretch is probably not yet done.

And this is a part of the State highway network : SH49.

Thanks. But I have gone to my native place (Sirkazhi) a few times by road via Pondy (not me at the wheel,of course), and I think I saw some NH board beyond Cuddalore.

ECR itself is actually SH 47, and will be extended along the coast to Cuddalore-Nagapattinam-Vedaranyam-Ramnad-Sayal Kudi-Tuticorin-Tiruchendur-Kanyakumari. Roads exist between the above places, but there are missing links, which are benig connected to ultimately become one large ECR. I visit Tuticorin area frequently and have seen the work going on in the Tuticorin-Rameswaram road. When it is completed, Chennai-Tuticorin distance by road is expected to come down by 150 KM.

The existing road that goes via Chidambaram-Kumbakonam-Tanjore-Tirupathur and links up with the NH at Madurai is not part of the proposed ECR. Sorry for the OT.

:)

I do feel ECR is just a hype. Too much traffic, its just a fancy state highway with reflective paint. Yes 'highway' partrol, 'help phones' doesnt make it what it seems, you get shareautos all over the place, villages and its not really a wide road. Its just a hype. Not my own view, a friend who builds roads in India said the same! And past pondy its pathetic, you never know when, who, what or which idiot is going to cross the road. full of villages. Safe speed after pondy would be 60 - 80. Some ECR, wonder if anyone has noticed the no of share autos in view? must be aroud 10 if not more at most times. Just ranting! No offence. It used to be a nice quite drive. And with everyone wanting to dash off to pondy or mahabs, we cant go out on weekends!

Chennai-Munnar is approximately 550KMs!

My car consumes around 15KMPL on the highway. (550/15)*50= 1900/- INR.

For the CRDi/DDiS/MJD its going to be much more easy
