2024 Tata Curvv | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

2024 Tata Curvv | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?-2024_tata_curvv_ice_exterior_01.jpg

The Tata Curvv (read the full review here), is offered with 3 engine options - a 1.2L Turbo Petrol, a 1.2L TGDi Petrol and a 1.5L Diesel engine. You can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed Dual Clutch DCT Transmission. The chart below should give you a better idea.

So if you were in the market for the Tata Curvv, which engine and gearbox combination would you pick & why?

The 1.5L 4 cylinder Kryojet Diesel engine puts out 115 BHP & 260 Nm. This engine is the more exciting of the three and delivers brisk performance. It is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed Dual Clutch DCT Transmission. You can read the drive report of this engine in detail here. This motor is available in all the variants of the Curvv.

The 1.2L 3 cylinder Hyperion TGDi petrol engine develops 123 BHP & 225 Nm. This engine is less refined compared to the diesel because of the less cylinder and it is not as fast as Curvv Diesel. It is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed Dual Clutch DCT Transmission. You can read the drive report of the MT in detail here. This engine is not available in the base variants of the Curvv.

The Curvv also gets Nexon's 1.2L 3 cylinder Revotron Petrol engine which develops 118 BHP & 170 Nm. It is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed Dual Clutch DCT Transmission. Although Team-BHP hasn't driven the Curvv with this engine, we assume its turbocharged unit will offer decent performance since it generates power and torque figures similar to those of other naturally aspirated SUVs. This motor is not available in the top variant of the Curvv.

No DPF & Adblue nonsense with the small diesels. I'd go for the Diesel AT from this set of options. Would be the perfect city commuter. All my current cars are 6-7 kmpl guzzlers, so it would be nice to have an efficient car in the household. Although, from the Curvv, my top choice of powertrain would be the EV. That's the one I'd put my money on. Already have 6-7 home chargers installed, so filling up is not a problem at all.

Again, just like the Nexon 3.0, the variant to go for is the EV!

Curvv EV with the 55kw battery is all the car anyone needs. Ample range for city use as well as for highway duty, proper DC fast charging capability, exhilarating performance and the kind of refinement and smoothness that only electric cars can provide. It is the complete package.

Diesel DCA,

why-
  • Higher refinement
  • Better mileage
  • Better reliability compared to newer GDI petrol
  • DCA is a true AT
  • Rear comfort is better in ICE vs EV, also no range anxiety

Again the EV is skipped out of the poll. As there was no other(s) option as well. I didn't vote. I will buy a Cruvv 55 without doubt. Range anxiety will be a thing of past with that car. The car with an easy 350-380 kms of range can do any city around Delhi non-stop. With its faster charging speed, farther cities and hills are just one food stop away.

Re: 2024 Tata Curvv | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

Curvv EV seems to be a better choice than Curvv ICE. Looks better, has way more power and that juicy instant electric torque, propelling it to 100 kmph in 9 seconds, which is really fast for a mass market car. Also in KA, since the Curvv EV comes within 25 lakhs ex-showroom, you don't have to pay road tax on the EV, which means that the Accomplished A variant in the Hyperion + DCA, Diesel + DCA and the 55 kWh battery are all around 23.5 lakhs. So unless it's someone who travels to a lot of remote areas, the Curvv's range is good enough to cruise at 100 in any highway for 300 kms at least before you need to charge it, and it's higher charging speed also makes charging it less of an ordeal. So with no price difference between all 3, I would go with the Curvv EV with eyes closed. Because you save massively on running and servicing costs as well.

But on a side note, I think the 1.2 GDi engine just isn't good enough for this segments turbo petrols, and definitely not at the premium Tata wants to command for it. Creta and Seltos come with potent 1.5 litre turbo petrols and DCT gearboxes too, and a petrol enthusiast always has the VW twins' terrific 1.5 TSI + DSG. The Curvv diesel though seems like a pretty good buy, it comes with a good DCA gearbox, would give great FE, compared to the turbo petrol and it's a nice 4 cylinder unit.

Honestly though, wouldn't buy any car in this segment right now, there's the Creta EV, Suzuki eVX, Mahindra's BE range, and Tata's Sierra EV all coming into the picture in the next year. Also I feel a price correction is imminent in this segment when more inventory continues to pile up.

If I were to buy a Curvv. I would buy only the Curvv 55kw EV variant whenever the price cuts or discounts are in play. I wouldn't buy it at the current sticker prices.

My top choice will be 1.5L Kryojet Diesel + 7DCA.

If given an option, I would have gone for the EV.

It is a perfect car for city driving, and with a practical range of 450+ km, it is also well suited for the occasional highway visits.
As far as the rear seat is concerned, there have been very few occasions when my rear seat has been occupied.

I just love the car from this angle.

My suggestion would be to keep away from EV's (too many horror stories from friends who own Nexon EV's and get the Diesel + AT combo. That would write off the long clutch/ rubbery gear shift issues. But if you want to do it on a budget and don't mind the changing gears, you should go for a mid spec diesel manual.

Re: 2024 Tata Curvv | Which engine + gearbox combination would you buy?

My pick would be Diesel + 7DCA.

Why?
1. Diesel engines for the low end torque
2. Better mileage compared to petrol
3. No ethanol mixed in fuel at least for now
The days of driving pedal to floor have gone past for me. I look for comfortable car which can chug around in the city, highways and can pick up pace from 80kmph to 100kmph when needed on highway for overtakes.

The Kryojet diesel engine is new from Tata and this engine does not need DEF/DPF. It will be interesting to see how this engine fares in coming 6 months. I am still waiting for dealership to provide Curvv diesel automatic test drive.

The DPF is still present and will need regen if driven in the city for long periods. I believe the adblue is a tad better in that sense, when it comes to regeneration.

DPF is a part of this diesel's after treatment system. I presume you meant DEF.

I voted for the diesel MT, just because of the fact that this will be value for money proposition and is a proven technology as far as Tata Motors is concerned. Diesel engine with DCT may not be not a smooth affair and this might have initial niggles.

If I am able to stomach the oddball styling and considering I am from Delhi I would do with the 1.2L Revotron mill DCA because:
1. Automatic for general ease
2. Feel 1.2 is good enough for city maneuvers and that occasional highway run
