Dilemma: Buy current-gen Toyota Fortuner or wait for the next-gen car?

Hello Fellow Bhpians,

I've been following team bhp for the past many years now, and while all the information was sufficiently discovered on various forums, I'm hoping to get some direct insight/advice this time round.

I've been contemplating buying a full size 7-seater SUV for a while now and after having seen the situation with Kodiaq and reviews of Jeep Meridian, am leaning towards the mighty Fortuner. However, considering there's a generational update due now and waiting period is currently 2-3 months, don't want to get stuck with a last gen. model within 6-8 months of purchase. Hence, requesting for some advice/clarity if you think the next generation update is coming anytime soon and it'll be prudent to wait, or will it be better to go with the current one?

Much thanks in advance!

Understanding the basic life cycle for Toyota Body-on-frame vehicles, I really doubt a new generation is around. This generation was launched in 2016. Facelift done in 2021. Some minor updates might come in a 1 or 2 years but a new gen is definitely sometime away. Normal a 9 year life cycle with 2 facelifts is what Toyota follows.

Wait if you are okay with a potential 65+ lakh price tag and you are planning to keep it for a really long time. (read 15+ years if the govt allows)

Don't if you just want a Fortuner now and enjoy it. The next gen Hilux on the TNGA-F platform is a good three years away. The Fortuner will be another year away. So definitely after 2026. The only big change the next gen Fortuner may have is a V6 diesel option.

Looking at current scenario, I don't think Toyota will be launching any major generation update for Fortuner at least in India very soon.
Now all future major updates will be more in the direction of Hybrid or Electric ones.
If you intend to keep new diesel car for 10 year now, then this may be your last diesel engine vehicle, we have already lost a gem of engine i.e VW/Skoda TDi Diesel, I see same thing happening with others 3-4 years down the line.
And Toyota full size Hybrid / Electric SUV will surely be 65+
Enjoy the ICE age till it lasts !!

Here are my 2 cents.
Buy the current gen Fortuner. Giddy up, they might hike the prices any moment now. By the time next gen Fortuner arrives, your resale value will be as same as what you will pay now.
If you want to upgrade, sell and buy the new one. If you don't, maintain it properly and your kids will get to drive it. Ofcourse I'm presuming that you will be registering it in remote town to bypass the stupid 10 year rule.

The next gen Fortuner is expected to make its global debut in 2022 itself. I am not sure what's with the 2026 discussion.

Toyota Chief Engineer details out the approach for the next gen:

This interview was posted in Jan 2021 and plans on the generation change were already afoot, as per the discussion.

That was a wrong assumption made in video. There will be an update to make Fortuner BS6 stage 2 compliant, may be another facelift and engine tweak. Typically we should start seeing next gen Hilux first, which is expected to come late 2023-2024. The Kijang/Fortuner may arrive at same time frame. That said for 2023 launch we should start seeing test mules in Australia /Thailand this year. 2022 means 6 year lifecycle which is too short even by hatchback standards, Body on frame usually have longer life span. I am guessing, Toyota will stop the regular Fortuner and retain just the Legender.

I think if you want to enjoy the diesel mill then buy it now because no matter when the new Fortuner will come, it will come with a hybrid powertrain or petrol. The price will also be quite a lot more than what it's now which is already expensive. Also if you need a car now then waiting for next gen is futile because we don't have a timeframe for the next gen launch and it's definitely a couple of years away if not more.

Going by Toyota's body on frame vehicle lifecycle, no major update is planned at least for couple more years. And when the new generation does hit the market, it will cost German car money!

In 2024, there will most likely be a facelift considering CAFE 2 norms related engine tweaks.

So go ahead with current version and enjoy the ride.

Go ahead and buy the current one.

Firstly, while the 2021 iteration is a "facelift" on paper, it is much more than that under the skin. So, Toyota will keep it in the market for another 4-5 years at least.

Secondly, next generation Fortuner would be a diesel-hybrid (as quoted by their chief engineer) and with that, you lose the biggest USP of the Fortuner - that brute of an engine! Moreover, with rumors of a monocoque/FWD Innova, what if they choose to take the Fortuner down the same road too

Thirdly, the next generation Fortuner will come with a HUGE price hike, going by Toyota's past record.

And last but not the least, enjoy the good things in life while you can! With the uncertain world we're living in, you never know what lies ahead

Hello everyone, how are the waiting periods for Fortuner in Hyderabad? I am hearing a wait period of 7-8 months as of June 2022 with the only Toyota dealership left in Hyderabad. The other 2-3 Toyota dealerships have abruptly shut down (and taken out from Toyota Bharath website as well).

It's almost a year now, have you purchased it? I'm in the same dilemma now.

Well, a long pending update to my above post has been very much due, and thanks to the shared wisdom of all fellow bhpians above, I went ahead with my purchase of a Fortuner Petrol AT last November and planning to post an ownership review soon.

Reasons for going ahead with the Fortuner current generation:
- there's absolutely no other option in this segment. Period.
- while I had originally booked a diesel AT 4x4, even after 4 months of wait, there was no update from dealership on the status of my vehicle as Toyota had stopped 4x4 briefly for a couple of months and none of the dealerships had any clue,
- in the meantime, horror stories of DPF clogging up in new Fortuners made me very anxious as I live in NCR and daily driving is very, very less,
- refinement of the petrol engine and reliability of the old workhorse 2.7L engine made the decision easier,
- Toyota had been increasing prices every three months and there was no idea when and how much the next increase would happen,
- lastly, there has just not been any news, update, spy shot or scoop of the next gen. Fortuner anywhere either in India or abroad, and didn't want to wait another 2 years for the car.
