I vote for the XUV 700 AWD. Even though it is is still not out in the hands of actual drivers.
Costing and easier availability of spare makes a compelling case for use as a long distance tourer.

You just spoke my mind. For less than 28 lakhs, xuv700 offers, rear independent suspension, awd, Sony music system, adas super comfortable seats skyroof etc. Similarly, top end Hector is also very feature rich. Cars like these make the cars listed in the poll way overpriced except Carnival.

I also vote for XUV700 for similar reasons. While I can afford a Kodiaq if I really wanted to, I just can't justify the price.

And its not just the Kodiaq. I booked the XUV700 D L AT AWD on October 8 but once the delivery dates started stretching to an year or so, started looking at everything else that was on offer, including the German trio. Once I experienced the XUV and the others, I decided to stick with the XUV (although I am still considering the Jeep Compass, which is again way overpriced).

Admittedly they are all superior with obvious differences in fit and finish, the luxury feel etc., but the premium charged for these are still way over the top IMO. Also, mine is very much a case of wanting a new drive and not really needing one which will influence my vote.

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

I'm not sure what this poll is about- the list seems too random- BoF SUV compared with MUVs and Petrol C/SUVs. If it's for comparing cars in similar price bracket of 30-45L then some German sedans and entry level luxury suvs should be there too.
If it's for 6/7+ seater people movers then why does it have C5 and Tiguan? and why not Innova, Safari and XUV700?

Voted for Others. I see BOF, MUV and monocoque are the options here. So assuming this is not just SUV category, my pick would be 330i Sport in this price range.

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

Since both BOF and Monocoque SUVs/MPVs are present, a person interested in a BOF will not look/consider at a Monocoque and vice-versa!

My pick in the BOF range will always be the Fortuner, yes it is ridiculously priced, has lesser features compared to the competition, but as a package with Toyota's reliability and after-sales support its a joy to own and can outlast it's owner. My Fortuner will turn 8 in 4 days, if I am going to replace it with anything, the first car I'll look at will always be the Fortuner and then at the other options available.

In the 5 seater/monocoque segment; if a people-mover is top-priority then the Carnival otherwise a tough choice between the Tiguan/Tucson/C5 Aircross. Kodiaq I consider as a 5 seater and not a 5+2 or 7 seater because the last row can barely accommodate even children and with the absence of any kind of AC vents in the 3rd row, nobody will prefer sitting there! And the jump in price between a Tiguan and even the base Kodiaq Style is approx 5 Lakhs, which is a big difference!

And looking back at the previous year polls, there is something constant in it, it may not lead any poll but it will always get my vote if I'm spending 45 lakhs.

Not generalising, but most people in the budget of 40 to 50 lakhs wouldn’t think about XUV700 though it is more VFM. Reason might be many based on individuals. If I am in this budget I would put my money on Tiguan, Kodiaq or even X1 - definitely wouldn’t even consider XUV700 as my reason would be not to spend that much money on Mahindra, though it is a very good car.
That’s where from the poll perspective we have Others, as there will be few others too who though they can easily afford any of these cars still go ahead with XUV700 for the value it offers.

Well depends on individual tastes, for someone like me clean European lines itself is a pull. I see Tiguan and Kodiaq much better looking than Fortuner. Similarly I find Compass and current Tucson good looking (though new Tucson from the pictures atleast looks like a satellite )
Agree on the reliability part though

That would be my pick too with this approximate budget, though outside of this category.

Like a few other members on this thread, I too believe that the XUV700, Safari, Hector offer more bang for the buck than these options. Sure, they might lack a bit of finesse w.r.t. the euro twins but make it up by offering competent engines and the XUV and Hector even offer a few more features than them.

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

I inadvertently voted on the wrong choice in the poll. My pick would be neither of the listed vehicles. Some are simply overpriced (Fortuner) whereas others are too small and metrosexual for my taste (Kodiaq). The 3.2 Endeavour would have made a fine choice but now that it is discontinued, I would rather pick the Alturas G4 and invest the 10L saved into a SIP. Its interior blows away every car in the list (yes the Kodiaq too) - I have experienced it just once and I still cannot get over how premium the interior felt. Its larger than the Fortuner. It does not have Chinese roots like the Gloster (Korea is close but it's not China ) and as I have limited 3rd row requirements, the excellent 3rd of the Gloster does not hold much allure for me. Its road presence is second to none and coupled with a low range gearbox and 240+mm GC, its off-road prowess would be more than enough for me (the Fortuner is arguably better in this department but not 10L worth better).

The Carnival is a close second though. It is an extremely VFM offering and save for the rough-roading capabilities, it does not lack for anything (especially in the price point it is offered in)

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

I would have normally voted for the Toyota Fortuner, but this time, I won't. I feel it has gotten just too expensive for what it offers.

I like the Kodiaq. The technology is excellent and so is the build quality. But, that turbo-petrol will just not be economical while touring and Skoda reliability is iffy. It cannot be the only car in my garage. A diesel engine might have changed that though.

The C5 is another car I love. Lots of positives, but the brand has not attracted many buyers and the company has limited presence.

The Carnival is OK only I employ a chauffeur and I don't like the other two cars in the poll.

Hence, I voted for "Other". The XUV700 diesel AWD will give me everything I need and more at a lower price.

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

I have opted for the fortuner, the indestructible king of the segment. Its a proper definition of a 4x4 SUV. It’s easily the most reliable of the lot, and has a stately presence. I’m willing to compromise on the poor interior quality and bumpy ride quality, but by sacrificing these two I get a car that’ll keep me save and run fuss-free for lakhs of kms and years, can take me practically anywhere, and is enough to scare others through their IRVMs. On top of that, superb resale and toughness wins it all, even though my brother loves the Gloster a little too much :(

For exclusivity alone, I'd pick the C5 Aircross.

Soothing interiors and comfy ride would be additional freebies.

If you are going for the Kodiaq, you should pick the L&K variant - but at ₹ 5.5 l ex showroom more, it is practically from a different segment.
This was my thinking as well that the Kodiaq Sportline and Tiguan were closely matched but Tiguan made more sense at the lower price point especially since the 3rd row seats are as good as useless.

However a deep dive into the specs changes that and you suddenly realise that forthe 4L additional the Kodiaq Sportline isn't just offering you a 3rd row. To name some of the additional features:

1. 9 airbags in Kodiaq vs 6 in Tiguan
2. Fully electric passenger seat with memory function in Kodiaq (my dad loves this) vs manual seat in Tiguan
3. Canton 12 speaker system with subwoofer in Kodiaq (Sound quality is in different league) vs the regular 8 speaker system in Tiguan.
4. Auto dimming and defogging ORVM
5. Park assist system with front, rear and side parking sensors in Kodiaq vs just the front and rear in Tiguan
6. All the simply clever stuff like umbrellas, neck rest pop outs, rear sun blinds in the Kodiaq.

The Tiguan has one big advantage which is the compact dimension making it a better handler in terms of dynamics.

My vote goes for Carnival just for amazing value for money it offers. It is only car available in India (period) which offers 7-8 seats with good comfort without compromising on boot space. It has loads of features and good diesel engine. Surprisingly it's the cheapest too in this list making it great buy for someone who is looking for family car.

Re: Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster vs others

Forget 30L onwards, I wouldn't touch a Mahindra/Tata vehicle at any price. What i look for in a vehicle is reliability foremost and a "Fill it, shut it, forget it" kind of experience. With that as a baseline there really is no competition to a Toyota or any Jap vehicle.

I would also like Kia Carnival on second, simply because it has Hyundai brand in addition to Kia tagged to it.
