Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

Looking to buy a Petrol only car with 12 lacs On road price bracket. Back seat is not a constraint as will hardly be used. Ground clerance is required to tackle bad roads.
  1. Yearly run 8-10k with 90% City driving.
    Sedan is a not required.
Drive is important, should have decent grunt for 10% highway runs.
Preference is for top model with healthy feature set.
    Color - White only
LED lights are must, looks good and assume hat it would have better throw than halogen/projector headlamps
    Fuel efficency not very important
If Sonet HTX then Alloys will be market fitted. Post increase in price etc. It will come to 12lacs
Tyres upgrade will be done to either Yoko or Michelin sport tyres. Need to check 215/60/16 will fit in magnite.

Have test driven both and few observations, though they have already been covered in review won't go into details,
Likes - Sonet
Interior quality
Speed dials,
Sunroof
iMT is not that bad but nothing compares to full blown Auto
Good highway manners
LED all round including headlamps

Dislikes - Sonet
Beige black doesn't look half good
Projector Yellow colored fogs

Likes - Magnite
Full LED front fascia including Fog
That's a personal opinion Magnite hands-down looks better than Sonet in White from all angles
CVT is butter smooth and pulls well for car it's size, I had my reservations for CVT and it is definitely better than Manual variant. Sports mode makes a difference too
Have not tried L mode
Under 11 lacs on road including Gold AmC and extended warranty for 5 years/50 K kms means no major service cost next years. Lovely packaging and pricing

Dislikes - Magnite
Interior is definitely inferior to Sonet but in comparison with Black+Beige (Sonet) HTX it's not that bad
Sunroof is missed in all black interior
Camera quality is OK Ok
Corners are cut definitely imagine even the swift 12 years back had better quality rear view mirror casing
Handrest is not usable unless you have Kanoon ke haath
Seats blostering is not that great
Speed dials are funny

Kia sonet with all its features is good Infact HTK plus is not considered as it doesn't get all LED H/T and sunroof

More tilted towards Magnite after driving CVT, its not perfect but welcome suggestions are friends on what could be the best option to choose.

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

It seems you like the Magnite more, but are confused by the bling the Sonet offers. Let me be clear. No amount of features can make up for more space, better road manners and a better tuned or more convenient gearbox. No car in this segment is perfect but the new Nissan is a very decent package especially considering price. You are getting are lot more value for your money. The AMC is added bonus and assured peace of mind.

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

My take among the Magnite and Sonet would be the latter because:

+ Possibly better resale value for the Kia.
+ Much better interior build quality. Have zero rattles in our Hyundai. Expect the Kia to be similar.
+ Better infotainment system with superior user interface.

But the Magnite's biggest plus point should be it's 'proper' automatic box.

If you've haven't checked out the EcoSport 1.5 AT, do try it! Should get the Titanium variant for 12L on-road. Though low on features, it is still a competent model.

Also, though LEDs provide better illumination in dry weather, they have very poor illumination during rains. So an all LED setup is not a very practical idea.

Road manners? The Sonet rides flat and very very composed, I'm not sure why people still belive that the Koreans haven't mastered ride and handling, while even the worst handling Japanese cars (there are dozens) get a free pass because of their ancient reputation.

Of course I've not driven the Magnite but it seems to be barely average, Nissans are just bare minimum cars in build quality and fit-finish, not sure if this situation will be any different.

As for CVT tuning, again, not sure but mostly any dual clutch transmission should be better than that for torque and kickdown acceleration. I'd pick the Sonet/Venue for sure over this, who knows when Nissan might shut shop and from the looks of things now, that may soon become true.

Resale doesn't matter in this case, I believe one buys the car to drive and enjoy every little time one spends driving that car. Its just not to move from Point A to Point B. Atleast not for me.

I completely agree Ecosport is a very good car but too old now. Hence excluded

Ok. Here I was comparing Nissan CVT 1.0 turbo Premium vs turbo petrol HTX iMT where sonet has actually lesser features in comparison.

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

I am having the same confusion. I have booked Magnite XV premium CVT. I would really buy Sonet HTK+ Diesel AT with less features only if they provide LED headlights. I don't like halogens in my current car. So good headlights is a priority.

Driven them both. I found the Nissan to be more comfortable and pliant, at least at urban speeds. There was a definite stiff edge on the Sonet that was not there on the Magnite. This is something my slip disc affected back appreciates.

Also, the CVT is very fairly tuned. Works very well to mask the lag and rubber band effect is barely felt in city driving. I’d take it over the iMT. Also, it will be fair to expect the CVT to be more reliable and trouble free in the long run. Clutch wear and replacement is always going to be an issue with the iMT. It will happen every now and then, just like a manual.

The only place where the Sonet trumps the Magnite nice and properly is the cabin ambience and initial impression. Nissan could have done a much better job with the dashboard and instrument cluster. But given the price, I think it is easy to overlook.

I would recommend that you read through this (New car, but old platform : Does it really matter?) thread, and reconsider the Ecosport

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

If not done already, go visit a Ford showroom and get a feel of Ecosport. If back seat space is not an issue, Ecosport is way way better in all aspects from both the cars in consideration. Just open and shut the doors once in these two cars and do the same in Ecosport, there is no comparison between an Ecosport and these two tinny cars.

I've not test-driven the Magnite. But I did try the EcoSport, Venue, and Sonet. To be fair to Kia (not because I purchased one by the way), the door feel in the Sonet is solid and heavy.

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

I have to point this out.

Sonet is supposed to have a very firm ride. All undulations are felt. That I feel is a downer considering how often you will run into bad patches of roads in India.

I am not aware of the ride quality of the Magnite though.

re: Nissan Magnite vs Kia Sonet

I am not sure if you require a full blown automatic, or could do with a manual, since it's not mentioned in your requirements. If you could do with a manual, I would say ditch both and get the Ecosport S. Only chink in armour is the rear seat space(best in segment comfort for 4 due to high seats), but since that isn't your requirement, this fits best for you. It also gets HIDs, which IMO are better than a LED (especially in rains).

Contrary to that, I felt the doors in Sonet, especially the rear door, was very light and tinny. I checked the Ecosport and the doors felt decidedly heavier (and thicker). I don't own a sonet or ecosport, but if I had to, it has to be Ecosport - it is still the best amongst all CSUVs currently in the market if rear seat space is not a concern.

Velu I agree platform doesn't matter but the car is old, i had booked Ecosport in Nov 2012 and its launch kept on getting delayed, by then I had picked up Skoda Rapid diesel jn Mar 2013 and I dont regret it a bit. Drove that for 1,20,000 kms niggle free for 6 years before i sold it. I was a very happy Skoda customer. Imagine if I were to buy Rapid with that 3 pot turbo petrol, in the base rider plus variant today. Amazing value, no doubt but its old

+1 to that. That's what I wanted to ask. Nicely tuned CVT would anyday be better than iMT plus a 5 year AMC to top it and at a much lesser cost
