Re: 2025 Yamaha YZF R9 unveiled

Although this was much awaited, I am still a bit confused about this one.

I would like to think of this as Yamaha's Daytona.
The engine is bigger and torquier but less top end power. Should they have made some changes to the engine to suit the super sport character a bit more?

Is 117 BHP enough for the spec sheets in today's world when smaller bikes produce more power like 6R etc. Daytona with smaller engine made more power than this, was lighter and most likely more thrilling to ride as well. I know in real world it is more than enough, but how many people buy super sports with real world realities in mind.

Should Yamaha have kept the bike simpler with less electronics and kept the price even more competitive? Today nearly all Yamaha bikes which are selling are raved for their simplicity and competitive pricing yet being characterful. Should Yamaha have stuck to the same principle?

Who is this bike for? I sense that super sport bikes are kind of making a comeback and in real world terms this bike makes a lot of sense, but I have a feeling that there could be other more exciting options available too.

I love Yamaha and want them to do well. I am just unsure if this bike can help them do well!!

They badly need the next Tenere or the next MT09 for them. I have a feeling they are making the mistake which BMW made few years back by trying make softer more comfortable cars which was Merc's USP. Yamaha is known for crazy and fun and they should also be producing bikes that match that otherwise they will loose their identity.

Rachit!!

Same thoughts were in my head too, although Daytona wasn't a Crossplane-3. Now, I haven't ridden a Crossplane-3 yet, so no idea how this will fare.

But this particular bike:- is a faired MT-09. Simple, like it or not. And this is certainly not the supersport DNA, not comparable to the older Daytona, which is now quite diluted itself. OP's statement about R9 slotting between R6 and R1, I'm not too sure again.
Daytona 675 remains legendary I guess, if that's what you refer to. The inline 3, 240* equal firing order engine was a treat in all ways, almost replacing inline 4s for most of us.
Still, the original Daytona weighed 187 kgs, so 195 is not too bad.

As far as R-series dilution is concerned, it has happened years ago. And I'm not referring to R125 or R15 or R3, those are great machines within their respective segments.
I'm talking about R7 with a streetbike level twin-cyl. engine, not even faster than YZF R6. You can argue about Ninja series being the same, though.

Only we the bikers keep on ranting, legendary machines, heritage and all. For them, this is business. And its about making money. I guess.
But yes, this R9 will prove to be a stylish and practical city & touring bike, I'm sure.

I guess he meant this is Yamaha's Daytona moment where a true supersport has been replaced by a more practical machine.

In fact, the Daytona itself was an R7 moment - as the success of that parallel twin R7 is what spurred many companies to revive these sporty middleweights with practical motors.

In that way, R9 is the older brother to the R7 - rather than slotting between the R6 and R1 as the press release claimed.

Ok, I got it now.
Actually, I was not aware of an older R9, so was not able to connect. An R7 did exist in the 90's though, if I remember correctly. Apologies for the confusion.

But true, considering that both R6 and R1 are on the extinction path, a supersport has indeed been replaced with a more practical machine, give or take a few changes in its name.

Indeed these torquies are selling well. The market has indeed matured, the global one that is. And, yes, like you said, Yamaha would follow the trend.
