I would like to think of this as Yamaha's Daytona.
The engine is bigger and torquier but less top end power. Should they have made some changes to the engine to suit the super sport character a bit more? |
Same thoughts were in my head too, although Daytona wasn't a Crossplane-3. Now, I haven't ridden a Crossplane-3 yet, so no idea how this will fare.
But this particular bike:- is a faired MT-09. Simple, like it or not. And this is certainly not the supersport DNA, not comparable to the older Daytona, which is now quite diluted itself. OP's statement about R9 slotting between R6 and R1, I'm not too sure again.
Daytona 675 remains legendary I guess, if that's what you refer to. The inline 3, 240* equal firing order engine was a treat in all ways, almost replacing inline 4s for most of us.
Still, the original Daytona weighed 187 kgs, so 195 is not too bad.
As far as R-series dilution is concerned, it has happened years ago. And I'm not referring to R125 or R15 or R3, those are great machines within their respective segments.
I'm talking about R7 with a streetbike level twin-cyl. engine, not even faster than YZF R6. You can argue about Ninja series being the same, though.
Only we the bikers keep on ranting, legendary machines, heritage and all. For them, this is business. And its about making money. I guess.
But yes, this R9 will prove to be a stylish and practical city & touring bike, I'm sure.
