Instantaneously decided to treat myself with a motorcycle but which one to choose remained a big question until few forum members, friends and fellow enthusiasts helped me choose the right category based on my preferences.
Congratulations Pferdestarke. The FZ1 is a brilliant future classic Superbike to own now. Very Reliable workhorse, Fun to ride fast and also light on maintenance. Plus, its almost impossible to find one with less than 10K kms on it.
I recently sold my 2012 FZ1 that was modified with a Remap and PC5 pushing upwards of 170bhp. What a brilliant engine this FZ's got, easily one of the most flexible litre engine. Very easy going when riding below 5k rpm but turns into a mad rocket beyond 6K rpm. I call it the 2 in 1 machine.
One of the best super bike to tour on the highway. The Japanese had given this beautiful ergonomics to sit and tour long distance without breaking a sweat.
But, at low speeds and in traffic, the bike feels quite heavy especially the steering and The engine constantly keeps reminding you of its presence by throwing hot air... my bike used to constantly nudge 105-110 degrees while riding in city traffic. whereas, on the highway it sits at a comfy 85 degrees like nothing happened.

I sold the bike only because i was starting to feel that i was getting too old for it. Plus the lack of ABS was starting to nag me with few near miss incidents where the rear got completely locked up (common issue with FZ).

get all your spare parts from bikebandit/revzilla and stock up. important parts are Fork oil seal, steering head stock bearings, brake pads, clutch cable, oil filters etc.
I struggled to get the Chain slider (Tore off on my bike due to excessive wear) and the starter relay (local mechanics will suggest to use locally available ones but pls dont).
Other than this, its a low maintenance superbike with a robust engine. congrats once again and ride safe!!

That's great! Can you please share the number of this guy if he has pan India service. I may need to transport two bikes to Mumbai from down South soon.

Congratulations on your purchase!!!

At some point of life we should live our life side by side taking care of our responsibilities.

I was surprised you got this bike from my own city as I have seen most of the naked bikes from Kawasaki here in Pune. I remember had encountered a CB1000 naked long back in the city.

Enjoy the ride to the fullest and pl keep posting / updating this thread.

Cheers

9000 KMS Update:

Clocked 1000kms since I got the bike, largely from weekend group rides. Slowly getting used to the riding characteristics. Yet to explore the scary territory of the powerband (haven't got a chance to push past 7k revvs), may be I should save it for a track day.

Waiting for the exhaust pipe reducer (ordered from UK) to arrive. Hopefully exhaust swap will be done by this month end.

Planning to change oil and filters after clocking 10,000 kms. Took help from krishnaprasadgg and procured necessary parts and consumables.

Sharing few pics from recent rides:

Re: Yamaha FZ1 Review | My first SBK | 4 pots 2 wheels and 150 ponies

Are there any FZ1's which are in good condition and genuine for sale? I have been looking for this for a long time and haven't been lucky enough. I would really appreciate if anyone has visibility of such FZ1 coming up or is already up for sale please PM me.

Re: Yamaha FZ1 Review | My first SBK | 4 pots 2 wheels and 150 ponies

DIY Mods Update:

Swapped the stock muffler with LeoVince LV One Evo slip-on. The stock muffler is very heavy, weighing approx 5 kgs whereas the LV slip-on weighs 2.3 kgs.

Took me about an hour and half to remove the stock part, clean the mating surfaces and install the slip on.

With the db killer left on, the exhaust note at idle is not much louder than the stock (which is a good thing) but as revvs climb, the note changes to a bassy one with loudness going up exponentially. Yet to experience the note with the db killer off. Will share a video clip of the exhaust note this weekend.

Got these axle sliders carried by a friend from US. Yet to install them.

Re: Yamaha FZ1 Review | My first SBK | 4 pots 2 wheels and 150 ponies

Which oil you using? For 2 years since I got the bike I used Liqui Moly Street Race 10w40 but it's quite expensive and I have ridden the bike just over 5k kms in the time ive had it so this I've bought the Shell Advance City 10w40. Lets see how this feels.

I haven't got a chance to change the oil since I got the bike. The odo reading on my bike stands at 9500 KMS and oil change is scheduled for 10,000 KMS mark. I'm planning to to try Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 during the upcoming service.

The oil change interval for the FZ1 is 6400 kms and ideally its the first thing you should change when buying a used bike along with all other fluids.

That Mobil 1 oil has an older API SL rating and I would suggest you get one with API SN at least.

I'm not sure what's your reference for the oil change interval but both FZ1 owner's manual and service manual recommends oil change every 10,000 KMS.

That being said, I'm planning to change oil every 5000 KMS. Here's a screenshot of the owner's manual for reference.

I skipped it as the previous owner changed oil & coolant just a couple of hundred kms before handing over the bike to me.

Amazon sells outdated SL grade oil where as local dealers have SN grade. Yet, I'm still stuck in two minds between Mobil 1 and Amsoil / LM.

Re: Yamaha FZ1 Review | My first SBK | 4 pots 2 wheels and 150 ponies

Service Update:

Even though I clocked only 1700KMS since I got the bike, I decided to go for an oil change along with minor clean ups and fixes.

Jobs carried out during service:
  • Oil changed to Motul 300V 10W-40
  • Oil Filter changed to HiFlo HF 204
  • Air Filter element swapped with an OEM one
  • Coolant flushed and replenished with Engine Ice
  • Throttle body cleaning done
  • Chain slack adjusted to spec, cleaned and lubed
  • Cleaned brake pads and rotors
  • Replaced tank cowl retaining well nuts

I have upgraded my riding gear, added a Rev'It Hyperspeed 2 GT Air Jacket and Rev'It Dirt 3 gloves to my arsenal.

Attaching few pics from my recent breakfast ride. A young enthusiast ran towards me and asked for a pic. I was like "why not kiddo!"
