I expect Duke to have a similar fate as well. I would thus not advice the OP to buy a bike at all if it is going to remain unused for 11 months.

Unless you have someone to maintain these bikes with atleast 5-10 kms run a month, don't invest money on a depreciating asset like bike. Long term parking and any vehicle does not go well from maintenance perspective.

And if you still insist pick the intercepter, cheaper overall, easier to maintain and easier for someone else to keep it running with a monthly spin around the block. You would need a automatic battery tender and provision to leave it connected at parking. Or it will be a painful experience.

I would personally apply for that UAE licence, pick something in UAE and enjoy it more.

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

Knowledge if not shared is of no use. Likewise, a machine with no (or rare) use is an absolutely injustice to enthusiasts' world here as well as to the machine itself.

I strongly advise you not to buy anything new (or) used for your India usage.

There are quite a few rental options available (even for the heavyweights and fast monsters). So better rent it out (even if it is interceptor) for whatever time you are in India.

By the time you are back in India in a few years for good, a lot would have changed. In fact, who knows even you would have changed as well.

Whether you want to own a bike there in Dubai is your choice and needs. That's another topic altogether.

The way you had put it , there is nobody to take care of bike in your home. 11 months of non activity will kill the bike, even if it is kept in storage. Your best option will be to rent a bike when you are here in India.
Invest the amount that you have allocated for bike purchase . Once you retire , you may buy a good bike to ride.

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

It makes more sense to simply rent a bike while you're in India. Splurging on a depreciating asset doesn't make any sense in my opinion. But if you have someone who can use the bike for short spins on a regular basis then it makes some sense. But then I think you should simply rent one here or buy one in DXB where you can ride it more often.

Neither. Rent one or borrow from a friend/relative.

Just relax and buy any bike your heart desires. Only, before leaving - give it a good wash, empty the tank, disconnect the batteries, put on centre-stand and cover it well. Nothing happens. I've been doing this for decades

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

My advice is drop the idea. The last thing you want is to come home after 11 months and find the bike not starting and you running to try and fix it. Unless you have a cousin or something to keep the bike in running condition simply forget about getting a bike.

A bike not being used for so many months is a big red flag for its reliability. It's going to give you lots of trouble in future.

If I had the money, buy the bike I want. Time flies, memories remain. 3 weeks a year of enjoying the bike you want and a life time of memories

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

One way you can have your wish fulfilled is get an old simple bike with electronics limited to headlights et al. That rules out fuel injected bikes.
Avoid old bullets.
Consider old rx100 shogun or yezdi if it moves your heart. Keep them lookig like they rolled off showroom today and you wont feel like you are compromising on style.
Make friends with your local mechanic, preferably someone who s been in touch with and maintaining your friends' bikes for ages and comes with reference. Knows them on first name basis.
A phone call one week before you come home should be enough to let him come home, add fluids and wake up the bike at nominal expense.
You can indeed buy a bigger more modern bike with that plan since you do have budget but i would go with something that has most parts available locally.

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

You could go for an used, low mileage Interceptor but be sure to allow some reliable person to take care of it during your absence. The reliable person would need to take it out for a short spin at least once a week.

Else, out of your 30 days in India annually, nearly 8-10 days could be fully intercepted for its care, by the Interceptor.

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

My choice / advise would be this...

Buy a bike for 2 lakhs for now and invest the rest of the money in any of the Index / Multi Cap funds (10% - 20% CAGR) until you permanently return to India. Once you are back in India, take the Mutual fund returns and buy a superbike that matches your taste at that point in time.

Buying a 12 Lakh bike that depreciates faster than it accelerates is not a wise decision IMHO. Seeing your 12 Lakh Bike lying in dust for the rest of 11 months will make you feel bad as well and that will be even more painful.

Some crisply articulated and sensible advice from Bhpians. Save the money, get a normal beater for that occasional run. When you come back, you might perhaps have an even fancier and wider net to choose from. Good luck.

Cheers!

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

I was in the same dilemma few years back. Then decided to buy a bike in Oman and have no regrets. I think you should do the same in Dubai. When I went two months back to India took continental gt 650 on rent for 15 days. No need to worry about maintanance and depreciation cost. And better routes for both on road and off road bikes in UAE.

Re: Buy a big motorcycle for 12-lakhs, or just an Interceptor 650?

As others have commented, please explore biking within Dubai and ride those bikes which aren't or will not be available in India.

If that doesn't work out for whatever reason, you have 2 choices in India. Either find a friend who trusts you with his bike for a month OR become that friend who trusts his bike with other friend for 11 months of regular usage and upkeep.
