2021 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles

The low volume market for Superbikes and Imports in the country doesn’t allow for a meaningful monthly analysis of their sales data. However, the same over a longer period of a full year makes for a healthy discussion - and with that goal in mind, below is the 2021 Annual report and analysis of the premium two-wheeler market in India.

3680 premium motorcycles were sold in the year 2021. The market, though still down, saw a 21% recovery compared to 2020, with all the brands enjoying higher sales, except for Harley Davidson.

  • Kawasaki emerges as the dominant player in 2021 with 46% marketshare, gaining 42% more sales as compared to the previous year.
  • Triumph registered maximum sales growth for 2021 - with 30% marketshare and falling just 20 units short of their all time best figures of 2016.
  • Honda had their best year yet - backed by strong sales of the 650 twins. Ends up with 7% marketshare.
  • Suzuki did a lacklustre job of bringing in their BS6 portfolio - but nevertheless brought in the one bike that matters in the Indian context. The results speak for themselves! Ends the year with 7% marketshare.
  • Piaggio has entered the charts with dispatch of 5 units since September 2021. However, due to very less data available, they have been excluded from the comparison charts above. Details of the dispatches can be seen in the main excel sheet below.

Re: 2021 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles

Thanks for sharing the details Crazy_Driver.

Few observations-
- Healthy dispatches of CBR650R/CB650R despite the outrageous pricing shows people’s trust in Honda.
- Trident was expected but Rocket in Top 5 in Triumph lineup is a revelation.

Did Piaggio started selling BS6 products from September 21 onwards or they weren’t sharing numbers earlier ?

Absolutely! They still have loyal customers despite the ever-increasing prices. No wonder the price went up by 47k with just a new sticker job today morning.

CB500X pricing seems to have backfired though - with dispatches of just 70 units. Considering many of the smaller BigWing dealers also have a display unit of this, Honda may not have manage to move many units to customers.

Gaining from the lost trust in big Harleys, I guess. Competent motorcycle in it's own right too!

Both. Autopunditz never had Piaggio data reported earlier and also the numbers reported are of BS6 bikes launched in August/September period.

Re: 2021 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles

Great to see Triumph gaining customers significantly post Harley Davidson exit. The Rocket 3 dispatch numbers are surprisingly amazing.

Great show by Z900, ZX10R and Hayabusa as well !

All these numbers and Yamaha India is nowhere to be seen. They were amongst the first big bike manufacturers to actually start selling their flagship products in India, almost 15 years back. The R1 and MT01 were amongst the first few biggies that were available off the shelf in India and now there is no sign of any Yamaha products anywhere in the list. Such a pity given that the new R1 and Tenere are absolutely fantastic products in their segments. Hope Yamaha India wakes me from their deep slumber and focuses on the premium motorcycle segment through flagship dealerships, much like Bigwing Topline in India.

It would be great to see where Ducati, Aprilia & Moto Guzzi, Benelli, Indian and BMW Motorrad stand in terms of numbers.
