There were reports in early 2015 of Yamaha's plan of bringing its mid-range naked sportsbike, the MT-09 to India in the later half of 2015. After months of stagnation, Yamaha may now finally be ready.

Three units of MT-09 have been imported from Japan.


MT-09 is powered by an 847cc, 3-cylinder engine (thus exempt from homologation) capable of 115 BHP and 87.5 Nm of torque. Yamaha is most likely to take the CBU route for the bike, atleast initially. When launched, MT-09 would be competing against likes of Triumph Street Triple and Kawasaki Z800.

If this is true this bike is one of the best i have rode here. It is like 75% a FZ1, very silent and has excellent stable body and unbelievable torque. Wheelie almost everywhere and every corner.

The 3 cylinder does excellent work and the after marker parts including exhaust, power commander and options makes this a great buy.

Would be interested to see the price. I do not see this any where less than 10L considering the FZ1 were sold for 10 before the price increase and they now cost a bomb.

Oh wow! This is a super 3 cylinder bike from Yamaha. Loads of torque and awesome fun. The MT-09 will be a brilliant addition for Yamaha and will help the brand a lot here.
This just opens up the playing field.

Gotta love how the Indian superbike scene is shaping up. More new arrivals every year and the MT-09 will definitely make for a promising buy, though I think the Street and Z will still have the larger audience. In the right colour, the MT-09 will make a great buy for someone who wants a performance bike with subtlety. I hope Yamaha prices it competitively, but I'm pretty confident they're gonna get greedy and demand a premium.

From lot of rides this is what i finally realized. If you want smooth, silent, near perfect performance and ready to pay slightly higher the Z is the way to go with all its tech, ABS etc.If you want something raw and affordable the Suzukis are the way to go. If you want the best handling, sometimes best looking and high performing bike. The street is the way to go and still costly though.

But if you want to feel the engine, its vibrations, its noise, its beat after an after market install and overall a feel of riding something definitely mechanical, yamaha is the way to go.I have the Fz6R and have rode R6, R3, Gixxer, Z1000 and can say that Yamaha has something unique when it comes to street presence, sound and overall feel sitting on that mechanical vibrator. :)

I wish they let 600CC into the market. I am there for R6 anyday over even an R1. The MT-09 stock is going to be silent and non engaging. Get those exhaust swapped, tune it and you have something that has a roar as good as any Yamaha. It may not be as good as the 4 Inline. The 3 cylinder makes a mixie/grinderish noise stock :)

I think thats the case with almost every motorcycle out there today on account of the emmission norms

Strangely though, I love the exhaust note of my Duke 390. Most folks feel otherwise and find the exhaust note similar to that of an auto rick. I for one could not disagree more

Yamaha MT-09 has right ingredients - light weight, loads of power n torque, looks ok if not good but indian audience will mostly prefer Z800, Street Triple due to price. See an import price of 4.1L will push landed cost to over 8.3L considering that it is imported from Japan. If it were imported from Thai (FTA) then landed cost will be 5.3L and yamaha could have priced it well within reach of aam aadmi :D

Just for price comparison- Z1000/N1000 is imported from Japan at price of 3.6L and Ex-Showroom is 12.5L

Yamaha MT-09 if imported at price of 4.1L will make ex-showroom to over 10L. I am sure Yamaha would keep the margin as low as possible but they will not be selling at a loss.

9L is decent price IMO as for 1L over street triple you would be getting lot more power and torque, riding modes, TC? and it weighs close to street triple.

As expected Yamaha launches MT 09 at 10.2L Ex-showroom Delhi.

The Yamaha MT-09 bike has been launched by Bollywood star John Abraham in India at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The motorcycle comes at a price of 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) from Japan.

Mods: Can you please change title to appropriately.

IMO Tracer MT-09 would have been more engaging for the Indian biker as its a all rounder. Take it on long rides, off roads or just daily commuting it does it all with equal grace. Looks wise as well its a semi-fared bike and would have enticed Indian buyers.
Not sure how would be the response for this naked version as the space is already occupied by super popular Z800 and Triumph Street triple and speed triple.
I don't think anyone on this group has bought one yet.

And I doubt if anybody would buy one. Brief comparo of the MT-09 v/s the Ducati Monster 821 as below:

Choice to me is pretty clear ....

I read on an auto portal that Yamaha MT-09 has riding modes - Just 2 modes though.

Are you sure on 14.14L as this leads to an ex-showroom price of over 12L as I don't think Yamaha have hiked price (I am aware of road tax hike for imported bikes in MH). You can get a litre class Suzuki GSX-S1000 for that money.

Monster definitely has more features and is on-par with MT09 on power but I would prefer 3 Cylinder exhaust note. Also MT-09 is lighter than Monster by over 10KG and black monster is boring when compared to red, which again costs more?

I wish Yamaha to assemble MT-09 and bring down prices to a reasonable ex-showroom 8.5 to 9L.

No idea about the pricing of the MT-09 but the Ducati Monster 821 in red retails for 13.4 lakhs OTR Pune and the Ducati Monster 821 in dark (matte black) retails for a few thousands less at approximately ~ 12.9 lakhs OTR Pune.

I have a quote from the dealer which saya 14.14 lakh... The RTO registration fees about 2 lakh in that

I don't understand why Yamaha is missing a good opportunity to sell the MT series in India. CBU is not worth the effort, must be local assembly.

I just test rode the revised 2017 FZ-09 and R6.

The revised FZ-09 is crazy. My opinion:

1. Loads of torque at lower revs. The bikes wants to just go. Extremely smooth fueling, and very light clutch.
2. Riding position is very upright, more like a supermoto. Flat seat
3. Very foot-able seat height. I am 5"3, 83kgs and had no issues
4. Riding modes are nice and really make a difference, B mode is nice and tame, no shortage of power and torque. A mode - are you nuts? Can be changed while riding.
5. Wind blast is a big big problem, past 65 miles/hr. Cannot tuck in to avoid wind, my arms were very straight. Seeing me struggle on the highway, another rider on FJ09 passed me and helped by staying ahead.
6. Sounds sweet past 5krpm, In A mode past 6K rpm, bikes wants to wheelie, no clutch action required.

Highly recommend it as a hooligan bike.
