The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Hi guys, some entertainment for ya'll
My 600 F3/F4i/954RR build off, or something to that effect.

Basically ripped my F3 to shreds, slapped on a complete 954RR front end - USD forks, triples, BRAKES! I believe this is the only F3 front wheel to be used with stock 954 brakes..the usual modus operandi is to use the 954 front wheel due to significant differences in bearing and axle sizes...so spent weeks machining shims...they don't make bearings that have the 600 ID with the 954 OD. Hmmm. Master Cylinder is a 19X18 Radial Brembo!

2011 CBR1000RR Carbon Fiber front fender.

Full 2002 600F4i fairings including headlight, digital instrumentation..spent months on this. Check it out below.

Carbon Akrapovic from a 954 RR with the titanium mid pipe..had to make a new bigger bore ceramic coated header for this.

Initially wanted to flog it, but have spent so much time and money that I decided to keep the damn thing!

Update : Have decided to make it a streetfighter-ish / naked-ish bike now..

re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

298mm - 330mm!
Needed to make carriers/spacers out of 4.5mm MS because the forks are much wider than the F3 ones and the rotor bolt pattern PCD was much much larger than the stock ones
2 Pot - 4 Pot Calipers!
954 RR 54mm Upside down forks with Ohlins internals.

re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

The Bodywork is 2002 600F4i. Full fairing, lights, mirrors, brackets, stays.
The tail was much narrower, and much more "in the air" than the fat-ass sloppy looking F3 tail and the entire subframe had to be modified, bracketed and strengthened to take the (now) stepped seat.
The front Fender is real carbon fiber from a 2011 CBR1000RR and is a direct fit on the 954 fork.
The full digital instrument cluster is also from the 600F4i and needed considerable wiring changes to work. Also the temperature readout doesn't work like this so the temperature sender unit to be used with this setup is only from a 1998-9 CBR919RR.
It's next to impossible to get to the stock sender as its quite deep down, so I modified the radiator pipe as close as possible to the stock location and machined a holder for the sender unit.
The master cylinder is a Brembo radial 19X18 unit, but is leaking a bit.

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Just found out the hard way that a Brembo Radial MC on a 954 front end on an F3 with F4i fairings (LOL!) does not fit very well!
The trials continue

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Seems the reservoir is the issue and it touches the fairing? Changing the placement of the reservoir will help, but where to move it, or lets do it the moto gp way in which the reservoir is replaced with a pipe and knob.

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Hi Yogi,
It's not the reservoir that's the issue, it's the actual Piston/Lever.
The stock MC is much "shorter" than this one, so it would clear the fairing bracket. This one slaps it before touching full lock.
I don't have my original MC anymore.

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Alright, no offence, but this looks one confused bike to me

A F3 with F4i fairing, 954 front end and exhaust, 1000RR front mudguard!! That is one heck of a Jap cocktail

I have few queries :-

1) Why didn't you opt to restore it back to original spec? I mean, is it easier to go this route than stock?

2) Wont the 954 front end make it a tad more front heavy? (I may be wrong)

3) Will a 954 exhaust system work as efficiently on the 600? Are you gaining anything in terms of performance or other aspects by using this setup?

Sorry for the array of questions. Am just curious!

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

Hi,

1) NOT easy at all! On the contrary.
Stock? Gosh - Where's the fun in that??
It's all about the sleepless nights, empty wallets and unnecessary stress that idiots like me thrive on!
2) Not Heavier but MUCH MUCH MUCH better, although my soon to be aching and destroyed back will tell the actual truth shortly.
3) May not gain much, but will not lose either, it just sounds Godly SPECTACULAR! Good and Loud enough for me!

There's LOTS more planned, but will keep that series for later in the year!

Don't apologize, please let the questions flow and stay tuned!

Absolutely relate to your thought process of spending sleepless nights and experimenting.

Now, that you have moved so far ahead with your project, do you have something pictured in your mind regarding the end result? Or is it going to be one of those endless journey of tweaking, riding and customising till the point you get bored.

I am absolutely hooked to this thread, since I was always a sucker for the late nineties, early 2000s supersports! Please do upload a video of the exhaust!

Re: The Frankenbike Build: My Honda CBR 600 F3 Build-Off

I feel you should have stuck to the F3 avatar and made it the best F3 rather than turn it into F4i/954. But that's just my opinion so please don't get offended. Amit, the guy you bought it from is a good friend.

Saw the bike at Johnny's. That akra was not meant for this bike and its evident when you look at it from the back. It slightly angles in towards the bike. The headers are not akra, they're prolly made locally. Besides, the bike will always sound like a carb at any rpm.

I hope it handles well after all the mods to the front end.
