Re: Supercars & Imports : Bangalore

I don't know whether this is off topic or not but I cannot resist from asking where the hell is the money pouring from for these Bangalore buyers of exotics ?

In AP during the '06-10 era many businessmen luckily rubbed shoulders with the top state gov brass and made a killing. Things hit the fan for these people and the slowdown in economy made it a double whammy for even the legitimate businessmen. The repercussions of these were so far reaching that the Hyderabad supercar thread has dropped into the abyss on teambhp !

In Bangalore, are all these sightings repeats or is the city seeing newer imports ? How are sales of exotics doing in Bangalore (2011 - till date ) ?

Land, real estate and other similar sources are boosting these purchases. As always there is more fuel from the scummy politicians-businessmen's nexus too.
Honesty, tax-savings, paying taxes, decency etc are for the mugs. This is the age of the Robber Baron in India.

Couldn't have said it better myself!!!!

What about the old money though - how are the buying trends among the IT barons Of Bangalore ? I remember reading Azim Premji and Narayana Murthy are not the sort to indulge in these extravagances ( which sounds odd considering there is probably nothing they cannot afford).

The IT barons in Bangalore are known for maintaining a low profile. The costliest car Mr.Murthy owns is a Skoda Superb. The other big guns also do not have anything great. It is the real estate tycoons and other industrialists who splurge. There are a lot of people in the city who can easily afford such rides, even more than the ones who already own it, but these are the typical Bangalorean ( I am as well) who think about practicality and saving up and therefore do not think buying such cars is worth it.

Interesting, I wonder whether it is about a when you have true power/wealth there is no need to show it type of attitude. Even in Hyderabad, the truly list topping uber rich choose to live a quiet and relatively modest lifestyle. Many from the Pharma sector come to mind.

But my main question has gone unanswered? How have supercar/exotic sales in Bangalore been since 2010/2011 ? Is this deprivation Hyderabad is seeing unique or is this the same story in similar places ?

I'm just an outsider, but my wife is from Bangalore. In my first visit there, I noticed not only is there money in exotics (as there were so many on display at Bangalore Club in January), but even everyday cars are being modified--wheels, stereos, tint, exhaust, and more. The number of companies catering to this market is so big that there's actually an area just for it. I've not even seen that here in the US.

I think it's not just the money, as there definitely is some coming in from the multi-national operations in the city. But, I think it's also the culture of Bangalore itself. Not everyone is a car enthusiast there, but I've not been to a city in India with such a high percentage that is. And this percentage probably extends into those that are uber wealthy, hence the exotics.

In terms of sales, I'd just be guessing if I posted numbers, but my gut feeling is that they're pretty strong and getting stronger. Harley-Davidson has a showroom there and Porsche was also just revamping theirs. Audi is a marque you see a lot, and those are expensive as well. To me, that shows a trend towards affluent car buyers. And with real estate still on the rise, I don't see this declining anytime soon.

Certainly eye opening! Thanks for the post. Now that I think about it surely there must be something in the water in Bangalore - after all, they've produced people like Mallya, who is obviously a very discerning auto-nut.
