A W201 Mercedes Benz 190 RHD of 1990 four speed manual

This 1990 Merc has a 4 cylinder 2.3-liter, 8-valve, 136 hp, petrol engine (W201) and has been bought a few days ago at New Delhi by my friend. It was brought by road to Nagpur. The car is in awesome shape even 18 years since it was made. The exterior look is a bit forlorn for a Merc but the interiors are well cared for and decent. The engine is in ship shape and the car can touch 125 kmph plus with no effort. It has a four speed manual gearbox and the OE sunroof.
The wheel caps are intact and the left ORVM is missing. The right ORVM is quite OK.The three pointed star over the bonnet is not fixed but flexible and can be bent as may be observed in the pictures.
The instrument console is neatly laid out with meters in an aesthetic array and the clock showing the proper time. The warning lights are at the base in a horizontal layout one beside the other. The car has ABS braking and the fusebox is fantastically designed. After all it is a Merc. I could not get a good picture of the fusebox, (hope to do so soon) but it can be sighted at the extreme right end of the engine bay towards the driver side.

I'm sorry to say, but the car looks miserable. However, I'm sure your friend will give it some much needed TLC to bring it back to its glorious form.

The 2.3 engine was never available in the RHD w201 except for the cosworth versions. It was avaiable for the US market if I am correct. I also think that it never came with a 4speed manual

I note the badge says 190 only. All fuel injected w201 were 190E's or 190D's.
The bonnet underlay has disappeared
Wheel trims are from the later w124

It could be a 190 carb with a 2.3 engine slotted in

The car has Hisar, Haryana registration and the series (G) indicates the car was registered around year 1998-2000.

Hey congrats Anjan. Whats the mileage on the odo? also $$?
If its a 2.3 liter engine then, there would have been a 2.3 badge on the RHS bootlid like 190E 2.6. From what Ajit says the E probably stands for EFI which this one does not have judging from the large saucepan airfilter on top of the engine.

This one should be a straightforward restoration. I'd say first order of things
  1. clean up the interior throughly
  2. degrease the engine bay,
  3. attend to all the rust spots
  4. get the missing trim pieces (Opera house?)
  5. Through tune up ie., change all fluids, filters etc (looking at the car, I'm assuming it didnt come with service records)

Thanks friends for the feedback. The car is really in not a good shape as of now.
akshay4587 true the interiors are not at all that good. But seeing the exterior I was expecting the interiors to be more shabby but the seats looked much better and so also most things were in their places. As many have said the car needs a massive dose of TLC.MPower thanks for all the details. Will inform him about it sure.
Its the smallest Merc of its time (the A Class had'nt come)but is still larger than a Toyota Corolla. The build is very solid. This was the forerunner for the C Class that came in in 1993 after the 190 series was discontinued.
All said and done the guy that my friend is, he is'nt really bothered about any restoration of any kind.He says that the car came from Delhi to Nagpur like a very fit and energetic Merc and so as long as its mechanically perfect and the three pointed star stays on the bonnet and boot he does'nt care as to how the car looks.

A true classic, congratulations to your friend.

Just out of curiosity, why would anyone buy a 190 over a W124 E220 / E250? The W124 is also a classic Merc, you can get 10 year newer examples with clean paperwork & service history (the Indian ones), is more spacious, will be in far better condition and go really cheap these days. So why a 190? Why not a '96 / '97 E220 with 141 BHP on tap?

GTO I too could not get any convincing reply to this query. Moreover I feel Merc A.S.S. do not stock the spares for the 190 as it was imported. As you say the E220 of 96-97 should have Indian connections so spares are easier to come by.
By the way I suddenly remembered about test driving the Rover Montego. Will do so soon.

I guess if you are around Delhi side you can for parts in Delhi karol Bagh or some other old imported parts shop and most of the parts by Merecdes are comman around the series and vechicles.

But the Car have potential and i seen couple of garage in punjan where they give life to old mercdes cars and make good money selling them to NRI's

I would suggest to try at Kashmere Gate rather than Karol Bagh and even at Mayapuri to a extent..Kb's mostly good for accessories ( though a good no of parts shop are there).
