I love these AMGs to the core but don't understand the logic behind the "Handcrafted by" thing. These guys must be making 1000s of AMGs.. So how in the world can each engine be handcrafted by a seperate individual? I am sure they won't enjoy so many engineers just for AMGs. Anyone can throw light on this?

AMG has a set of engineers, who work on certain types (V8, V12 etc) who overlook the assembly (or assemble certain parts themselves by hand) and final inspection of the engines produced. Then their signature is embossed on the engine plate, signifying whose work it is, and adding an aesthetic touch. Kind of like how an artist signs his paintings. the same applies for Aston Martin, and many others. Astons carry plates which say "Final inspection by..."

since work is divided, each engine carries different signatures. but if you actually inspect a whole bunch of AMG cars, you will see that there will be atleat 2 out of 20 cars, bearing the name of the same engineer.

PS - If you do find a bunch of amg cars, please let me know. i ll be there with my camera

From a video I came to know about the assembly the engines and there is kind of a line layout with skilled professionals standing against a workbench and assembling.
Brabus : Isn't this explaining the waiting period for such exotic cars.

rranjith_kum: I don't know if there's a waiting list for these cars in India but here in UK I've never heard of a waiting list for AMGs.

JayR: Ah so basically thats just a gimmick so as to make the owner feel yet more exclusive. I was wondering as they sold 24200 cars in 2008 worldwide, it must be one long job for each of these engines to be handcrafted! Thanks for the info though.

There is a waiting list here in India, because of demand. Actually, the lack of it.

Going by the thoughts of traditional (read, nearly 85%) Benz buyers here, they wont see the need for an AMG. They want an S or E Class, that is frugal (explains the sales of CDI vs. Petrol), that is comfortable, and most importantly, one that's a status symbol. You 'll never see your neighbourhood 50+ year old industrialist in an S65. He'll probably have the 320 CDI, with some nice options.

Therefore, keeping AMG models on shelf would be difficult for MBIL. Only a few would buy them. If im right, there is only one AMG here in B'lore (correction if needed). An SL55. That's why they wait for the customer to order, and then bring down the car.

I think there will be some selected customers for AMG, but all the manufactures forecast that Indian market is changing & will see an increase in the users of these muscled cars.

BTW, I've once seen a silver CLS 55 AMG from B'lore.
