Lamborghini demand soars among the young ultra-rich in India

Lamborghini is witnessing a massive surge in demand for its supercars in India. The ‘raging bull’ badge has struck a chord, especially with young ultra-rich buyers. In a recent interview, Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, said, “Indians are amongst the ones who are the youngest (of our buyers) after China.”

Winkelmann went on to explain, “There are two reasons – One, the average age of the population is very low. Secondly, you have a lot of startups in India which are very successful. You have very young high net worth individuals who are stepping into and willing to buy these types of cars.”

The luxury car market in India has been booming post-pandemic. Sales of high-end luxury cars have more than doubled in the past three years. In 2024, Lamborghini sold a record 113 units in India. 10% more than the previous year.

“Our type of business is scarcity, selling less than demand,” Winkelmann said. “We are not selling mobility and it is important to underline that. We are selling assets, a value when you buy a car like ours.”

Does he mean, supply less than demand?

Anyhow, sweet talk indeed, but I wonder if Mr. Winkelmann is referring to the reputational/ prestige value of a Lamborghini, rather than its actual market value as an automobile? Because, a word like "Value" attached to a supercar seems odd, when all you're talking about is Mumbai roads, or racetracks once in a blue moon.

Not selling mobility? I guess he means commuting mobility?

Haha...let's break the original ET article down by numbers:

So they sold 103 cars in 2023, and 113 cars in 2024 which is just 10 cars more
They expect to grow at a similar rate in 2025, so they expect to sell 11 cars more in 2025 over 2024.

Everything else like "demand soaring" or "being sold out till 2027" is just, you know, CEO talk.

I think you need to look at it more holistically.Look at this chart:

Lamborghini demand soars among the young ultra-rich in India-img_0663.png

10% growth means India is amongst the quickest expanding markets for them!

Whereas most supercars are pretty temperamental and unpractical, I would rate Lamborghini as the most temperamental and unpractical of them all.

Proper supercar of course, no mistake, but using it in Europe is already a challenge. Owning one in India must be a nightmare.

The two happiest moment of any Lamborghini ownership is receiving your keys to your brand new Lamborghini and the moment you hand those keys over to the next plonker who has just bought it from you!

With the state of our roads and the chaos of our traffic, by the time, one drives a Lamborghini, say from Iblur to KR Puram along the ORR on a summer’s day during peak traffic hours, it is quite possible that the engine temperatures would be beyond boiling.

These cars are beautiful and mechanically marvellous. For sure. But they are absolutely unsuited to situations and conditions such as those that we endure in Bangalore.

Look who is taking a leaf out of Ferrari's books. What happened to the "we are building cars for people to enjoy, not invest/collect"

Don't worry.

Most of the India sales are from the dressed up/fancy VW Touareg/Audi Q8. Not the supercars.

Anecdotally, Lamborghinis are more in-demand among the youth (or people who recently came into money) as compared to, say, a Ferrari. This might be because of Ferrari's snobby dealerships turning away new buyers, though I can't imagine Lambo dealers are too different. It might also be because of Lamborghini's aggressive fighter jet-like styling.

Have you all observed the same thing?

Note: not referring to the Urus or any ultra luxury SUV here, just the sportscars and supercars

Re: Lamborghini demand soars among the young ultra-rich in India

Most wealthy folks stayed away from Lamborghini because their cars offered zero practicality. Only two doors + two seats and near non-existent ground clearance were the main factors. Driving them in India was therefore a challenge and a half!

The introduction of the Urus changed that, and that’s probably the reason why Lamborghini was able to register decent sales in India.

Re: Lamborghini demand soars among the young ultra-rich in India

Lamborghini has been pretty aggressive with trying to bring in customers from smaller towns. They have done a fair bit of promotional activities and drives in smaller towns over the past years to capture the interests of prospective buyers. Probably this is the reason why they have managed to sell cars in Imphal, Shillong, Cherrapunjee, Aligarh, Guwahati, Tirunelveli, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Mehsana, Anand, Gandhidham, Panipat, Rourkela, Hubli, Almora, Vizag and possibly few more smaller cities and towns. Some of these cities have many other exotic cars as well but Lamborghini has been a first mover in most of these places.

Is the Tirunelveli one an yellow Aventador?

I was surprised when there was a red TN-74 Huracan running around in Kanyakumari. Can't even fathom driving it around Nagercoil town.

Also Lamborghini opened up a dealership in Bengaluru a decade ago. Ferrari, their dealer issues aside, had presence only in Mumbai and Delhi till now.

Lambo dealers turn away new buyers too here. In India, these cars are very much an exclusivity access-card. Companies like Porsche are stingy even with the base model 911 Carreras here. Indian demand is much lower than the rest of their markets. They can get away with it. Gatekeeping will only reduce when cars are treated as a commodity instead of the dream/life-goal they are today.

Not the Urus - the SUV can handle all of that and more. For India, it's the best Lamborghini you can buy.

Don't know about India, but generally, Lamborghinis are more "available" than Ferraris, a brand notorious for long waiting periods & screening its customers.

Plus, for 5-crores on the road, the Urus has incredible usability (by exotic brand standards) and is well-priced (again, by exotic brand standards). The Maybach GLS (based on the 1.xx crore GLS) is now a 4-crore SUV. The Range Rover LWB is a 3-4 crore SUV (4 crores for the 8-cylinder petrol).

Re: Lamborghini demand soars among the young ultra-rich in India

All the snobbery of dealers is dependent on outlook of the brand themself. If the parent company allots just 20 cars for our country in one year, a dealer can dare to be snooty. Had that been the case with Lambo, they wouldn't have promoted the brand in smaller cities. Lets just say, the sales teams of such brands work differently.

This is not true. You can walk into the Ferrari Mumbai showroom & they’ll happily sell you a Roma or 296. Maybe even the SF90 if you are a serious buyer. The snobby behaviour is with the exclusive/limited run models such as the 458 Speciale or the 488 pista.
