Maserati has launched its 2021 Ghibli range in India. The luxury sedan is available with V6, V8 and a new mild-hybrid powertrain. Prices start at Rs. 1.15 crore (ex-showroom).



For the 2021 model year, Maserati has made some changes to the Ghibli. The car gets a restyled grille and new tail lamp clusters inspired by the 3200 GT. It comes with full-LED adaptive matrix headlamps, soft-close doors, power trunk with kick sensor and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit and connected car features as part of Maserati Connect. It also gets Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).



The Ghibli features lightweight construction with a 50:50 weight distribution. It is equipped with Skyhook suspension and Brembo brakes

Ghibli Hybrid

New to the line-up is the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol mild-hybrid powertrain. It produces 325 BHP and 450 Nm. It enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (0.7 seconds faster than the diesel version) and its top speed is 255 km/h. The car gets regenerative braking. Maserati also claims that the mild-hybrid system reduces fuel consumption by 20%.

The 2021 Ghibli is also available with a 3.0-litre V6 that puts out 424 BHP and 580 Nm and a 4.0-litre V8 motor that makes 572 BHP and 730 Nm.

Although I am no potential customer, this car looks outdated. This price for a car that has been around since 2013 is way too much. The competition have changed generations and brought in fresher line ups.

The Maserati ghibli, the car you buy if you want to spend more than the sticker price on repairs. Outdated and outclassed by competitors, this car has no chance. I don't want to bring in reliability issue because if you expect an Italian car of sporting decent to be a reliable car then you're sorely mistaken, but the quality control is still rock bottom in Maseratis.

I have always been a sucker for Maserati. Some might call these designs dated, but I would call them classic and timeless. So much better than all the German trio crap! It has a very high desirability factor. That little clock alone is worth it!

Having said that, I have yet to muster the courage to actually buy one. I have come close to buying the odd second hand Maserati a few times in the last 10-15 years. And although I am a great believer in buying primarily on emotion, the problem is that these car suffer from a very poor image when it comes to maintenance and reliability.

Those are not necessarily off putting for me either. I would own a Maserati purely for fun and to fiddly with, like me other cars.

There is a good change that the poor image it has, might be more hearsay than actual ownership experience. And here in lies the problem. I know folks who own Ferrari’s, Lamborghini, Spijker, Bugatti, Koeningeggs, Aston Martins etc. But I have yet to meet an actual Maserati owner. Let alone one that owns and works on one that is say 10 years old.

Personally I think this whole Maserati brand is just a marketing myth. There are no Maserati’s on the road.

I have not seen a single Maserati on road, and the only time I catched a glimpse of one was while passing a BBT showroom.

Told you so, Maserati is marketing only. They don’t actually produce cars, nobody actually owns a Maserati.

You can find quite a lot of Maseratis in Dubai Infact given its atrocious resale value and the exodus of expats, you can get a 2017-18 Ghibli for a really good price!

But then again, Dubai is a complete make believe place. If you have any sense, nobody would willingly admit to having lived in Dubai. So yes, there are make believe people in Dubai who own, make believe Maserati’s. And as always with such myth, they are happy and get unbelievable good deals on their trade in’s from the local Maserati dealer.

Believe me, I visited Dubai multiple time. I consider them bad dreams, nothing to do with reality. All completely phoney. With the exception of the hundreds of exploit Indians working in hotels, restaurants and the malls.

It is the same in Los Angeles. A 4 year old Ghibli can be had for 1/3rd of the original price.
