Re: Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)

Thanks for accepting the invitation, androdev; otherwise, we wouldn’t have gotten to ogle at these beauties. Imposter or not, driving alongside them must have been a blast!

Here’s a pic of your car shared on Instagram.

Also, quite lucky to get number 10 instead of 07 (If you know you know )

Hint: World’s best football player. ;-)

Lucky is an understatement my friend, we are certified No.10 fanatics. My co-pilot son and I were overjoyed with the No.10 we got and thought we dodged a bullet by not getting No. 7.

Here is a shot by the official photographer of the event who also got the 10 vs 07 right, lol!

I saw some rushes of this on the 'gram and spied your car - was it the only white Carrera?

Yeah, there was only one white Carrera, also only one 997 generation. There was a white boxster, no other white cars.

And once you see it, you can't unsee it.
@androdev, I share your sentiments. Could you share the part numbers of the headlights and taillights you evaluated for your 997.2 Carrera? Specifically, the part numbers for the Porsche original right hand drive parts for India (even if you hadn't eventually purchased them).

RHD India 911 lights for 997.2

99763116912 (front left - with dynamic cornering function)
99763117012 (front right - with dynamic cornering function)

99763141706 (rear left)
99763141806 (rear right)

99763108303 (drl left)
99763108403 (drl right)

Don't buy below LHD ones:

99763116902 (front left)
99763117002 (front right)

99763141105 (rear left)
99763141205 (rear right)

I was planning to change just the lens of the headlights but ended up going with an aftermarket set. Worth considering if your headlights are functioning well and just need to replace the aged/cracked lens. You can find plenty of info on the internet on this DYI, here is an example:

@androdev, thank you for sharing the part numbers and the additional information.

I don't have a 911, I was just trying to understand the pricing of the headlights in more detail.

Did you come across this provider during your evaluation?

Awesome! We were on our way to Jog falls via Shivamogga.

Here is a quick trip report:

Things are likely to get busy for kids and me from next week onwards, so I decided to do a quick road trip to recharge our batteries. Looked up jungle lodges Sharavathi camp (came across this on @Dr.AD's threads - an incredible source of great road trips for people in Bangalore) and they had just one night availability for Wednesday. My gang was complaining about the rain, long journey for one-day holiday, the sudden decision, lack of democracy, etc. Mentally I was already on the road. Whatever little time I had, I was busy researching the route conditions and XP95 fuel locations.

We were traveling as a group of six, perfect for S Class and 911 combination. Understandably, nobody wanted to drive the family van so it was my turn to drive the S class while going and I will get to drive the 911 on our return journey.

A late morning start to avoid all the traffic and to kickstart the lazy holiday mood:
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-01nh.jpeg

Fuel stop at Shell near Sira:
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-01shell.jpeg

Soon after the fuel stop, we stopped for lunch at A2B that is located just after the Shell:
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-01xa2b.jpeg

We got off the highway at Chitradurga but I think we made the mistake of entering the town. I think there is a left further ahead that avoids the town traffic. The road to Shimoga was lovely and we reached Hotel Harsha for our overnight stay.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-02smg.jpeg

This property is very spacious and has very good parking facilities. Our usual choice is Royal Orchid but their parking is a bit congested so we opted for Harsha. Service, housekeeping and F&B are better in Royal Orchid but Harsha has very good potential if they improve their operations.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-02smgxharsha.jpeg

Left the hotel and headed towards Sagar. Shimoga - Sagar is a very scenic road. Gentle curves and lovely green canopy. No speed breaker craze on this Chitradurga - Shimoga - Sagar stretch. Hope it stays that way. This is one stretch where I wanted to stop by and take some lovely photos but didn't want to inconvenience the gang too much.

Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-03sagar.jpeg

After a short journey of two hours, we reached Jungle Lodges Sharavathi camp. I have been to a few other JLR properties and I'm a big fan of them - just that their availability is always a challenge and I don't like planning so much in advance. The rooms are basic JLR standards - comfortable and functional. Their location and views from the rooms are the highlights. This JLR is great for water related activities (kayak, jetski, etc.) and very family friendly.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-04jlr.jpeg

Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-04jlrxroomview.jpeg

We took the early morning bus ride organised by JRL to visit the Jog falls.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-05jobbus.jpeg

They took us two viewpoints. One was inside some sort of govt inspection bungalow campus where regular visitors are not allowed. As I have found out later after visiting the public viewpoint, this, in my very humble opinion, is the only way to visit Jog falls. The falls are spectacular, of course, but more importantly the surroundings are clean and there are no crowds.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-05jog.jpeg

As we all know, popular tourist attractions in India are very poorly managed and the lack of hygiene and overcrowding ruins nearly all tourist attractions. We later went to the public viewpoint which is under heavy construction and super filthy. There was a thick cover of fog/clouds so we couldn't see any falls.

We left JLR at around 11AM next day and headed to Bangalore. I got to drive the 911 on the return trip, so I got a bit adventurous and wanted to try a different route hoping for more rural roads. So we took the popular Sagar > Shiralkoppa > Ranebennur. Unfortunately this route has speed breakers, few damaged sections and some animal traffic, etc. My gamble didn't pay off! I would recommend Chitradurga - Shimoga - Sagara route over other options.

Animal friends:
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-06anms.jpeg

Potholes. Too mild compared to what we have in Bangalore through:
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-07ph.jpeg

Police. No idea what they were up to - I wasn't speeding and they had no business to stop me. I gave them a dirty look and they let me pass.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-08plc.jpeg

We reached Apoorva resorts near Davangere for lunch, even though it's on the other side of the road as this is a place I'm familiar with. I also wanted to have the option of halting there overnight if we are in no mood to face the fury of Bangalore evening peak traffic.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-09nhaprv.jpeg

We had lunch there and headed to Indian Oil Swagat within 5-6KM from Apoorva resorts towards Bangalore (used the service road) and tanked up the 911 with XP95.

We probably should have camped there at Apoorva resorts for a day as our subsequent journey saw heavy rains and nightmarish traffic when we reached Bangalore.
Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)-10rn2.jpeg

I feel really sad about the Bangalore traffic situation - it was no fun driving for 1.5hrs in peak traffic just to cover 18KMs from Taj Yeshwantpur to my home. Left one is when I reached Taj Yeshwantpur and the right is when I got home.

Crossed the 30K km milestone while returning:

Rowing alone - whatever it takes ;-)

Police using a tripod mounted speed gun to challan over speeding cars. One person is having a POS machine ready to pay for it.

Usually in MH they are positioned at places where there is an open straight road or place with very low speed limit(State Highway roads). One of easiest ways for govt to increase treasury money. Rs 2,000/challan.

These guys wait at the toll exits - during our current trip from Bangalore to Mumbai, we saw them at pretty much all the major toll roads in MH, collecting fine from road users! Sneaky.

The police runs the car number plate on MH E-challan portal to check for any pending outstanding fines. If they find one; they stop the car to recover the fine on the spot.

They have been doing this for more than a decade. I remember way back in 2010 I got a ticket for doing 82 km/hr when the speed limit was 80 km/hr near Bangalore airport in my humble Alto. They had exactly the same arrangement at that time. I thought it was fancy at that time as the police officer had a Blackberry mobile and it was connected to a mini printer through bluetooth to print the challan stating the speed limit, recorded speed and fine.

Re: Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)

Enjoying a sports car without the need to go above legal speeds is a big talking point among the sports car enthusiasts as the newer cars are too powerful and too quiet/smooth. Outside of a track, it's difficult too enjoy them without getting into trouble with the law. This I believe is one of the factors helping to increase the demand for the older and modestly powerful sports cars. In some cases, they are being sold at a higher price than their newer models.

The recent news about KA police filing FIR for speeds over 130 kmph takes this risk to a whole new level even in a country like ours where simple speeding tickets don't deter the rich sports car owners (https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/road-...-130-kmph.html (Karnataka to file FIR for speeding over 130 kmph))

If someone is in the market for a "used sports car" without the need for doing family/office-commute duties, I would say it's better to pay attention to this aspect. Don't get carried away by specs unless you have access to a track, etc. Enforcement of speed limits will only get more stringent even in our country.

Oh god, I hate traffic police and the way they try to extract money when you are not at fault. In Kasaragod, one day I was returning from Bekal Fort towards Kasaragod (my home). There is a straight stretch of road which is average and I was maintaining a speed of ~75-80 kmph. And the Creta in front of me was slow, so I overtook it and went ahead only to be stopped by the infamous Kerala MVD. I knew I was within the limits, stopped and greeted them. Then the conversation followed (I will translate it to English):

Officer: Hey, you are overspeeding. Pay the fine.
Me (confidently): Sir, I was within the limits. But, might have crossed the limit while overtaking. I apologise for that. I will be cautious next time.
Officer: That will not work. Pay the fine. You should be careful and not overspeed here on. Also, show me your DL.

I 'showed' him my DL and my Innova's documents were all in place!

Officer: Pay a small fine of ₹250/-. I will mention that DL was missing.
Me: (did not argue for my safety)
Officer: (handed me the slip) Pay the challan via the portal. And be careful next time, do not overspeed.
Me: OK sir. See you, thank you!

After I reached home, I checked my dashcam and found that I was at ~75 kmph (maximum) while overtaking. Even if I consider the discrepancy of the dashcam reading to be +/- 5 kmph, I was within the limits. But it was end of the month. I remained silent and left the place with a pissed off mind and a challan in my hand.

But, when I compare Kerala MVD to those in Karnataka, I have huge respect for Karnataka officers. They speak with respect atleast and since I speak Kannada very well, they have let me go off many times in the past.

I usually never make an eye contact with the traffic police: be it in Kerala or Karnataka. It works. But you never know again, if they capture your vehicle's pic and issue a challan.

Drive safe!
Sud.
