@androdev, have you by any chance been tracking how the over-rev ranges have been trending in the nearly three years since your last update? Thank you.

If you encounter the Maharashtra Traffic cops waiting at Toll Plazas to welcome outstation vehicles, you will pardon the rest of them without blinking an eye. From personal experience, they rank the lowest. Its been the same every single time. They have all the time in the world to hustle some quick money and chant the violation sections like hanuman chalisa to be taken seriously. Has forced me to enter Maharasthra in the dark and exit by dawn. Thankfully, they work hard after breakfast till tea time. Many times you feel that other states registration plates are the most unwelcome objects on the road in that state.

Not keeping track of it. I checked once in between and I found my driving pattern, thanks to PDK doesn't result in much over revving. Range 1 and 2 are considered very normal - just spirited driving. A good post on this:

@androdev, thank you, much appreciated.

Many moons ago when you mentioned that your 997.2 helped push previously unpushed buttons among your near and dear folks, did that require ranges 1 and 2 or did it happen way earlier in the rev range?

Maybe an unwelcome observation from my side: looks like you are averaging about 140 kms per month. I might be mistaken though.

Re: Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)

Bangalore cops are getting smarter with speed limit enforcement. Earlier, they used to camp with a speed camera and stop the over-speeding cars right there to collect fines. This would allow seasoned drivers to spot their presence easily. Now camera is stationed at one place and collection is happening at the next traffic signal - smart move I say!

Hard to spot the cops on the left:

Hard to miss these :-)

Sunday drive - made the mistake of going to Nandi Hills. Haven't gone there in ages and it was too crowded on Sunday morning. Interestingly, there are no speed breakers (except one railway crossing) on this stretch - wonder why such an anomaly in the land of speed breakers. The drive was a flop show but I enjoyed washing the car and taking a pic before the start of the journey.

@androdev, I assume your 997.2 911 is coming up for fitness renewal next year. Do you have any idea of the fitness renewal charges that you can expect? Thank you.

Re: Vroom for real - My used Porsche 911 (997.2)

One thing I miss in early 2010 era cars is the absence of bluetooth streaming of music. For some reason, they offer bluetooth integration for phone calls but not for music streaming. After a little research, I purchased an OEM iPod cable from eBay and tried to use it with a 30-pin to lightning adapter as I would get the bonus feature of charging the phone. It worked but the connection is not stable as any jolt in suspension (which are plenty in this car) would break the connection. So I finally purchased a bluetooth adapter from eBay and things are looking good. Spotify works nicely with track info and next/prev buttons. That's the only modern feature I wished for in this car and now I'm all set.

There are cheaper options like Aux-in and FM transmitter, etc. but I really like seeing the track info and using the next/prev buttons of the car.

Went on a quick family trip to Jungle Lodges River Tern Lodge. The state highways from Hiriyur to JLR via Hosadurga are not in a great condition. Nothing major to complain about but the roads via Shimoga to JLR Sharavati (Jog falls) that we visited last time were much more enjoyable. However this River Tern Lodge has fabulous clear water lagoon-like water bodies that were the highlight of our trip.

Few pics from the drive, no major scenic sections in the route. Regular Tumkur highway and Hiriyur-Hosadurga-JLR KA state highways without any interesting landscape.

If there are no potholes, there will be speed cams. That's the Karnataka road scene for you. Recent news of FIRs being filed for overspeeding has certainly created some driving anxiety, lol!

This is a 2011 car, so I guess I need to visit this in 2026. I'm assuming there are no major costs in RC renewal.

They have released new units for upto 997.1 that support this.
https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessor...ghlights/pccm/

I keep toggling between buying one (for the convenience it will bring), but keep putting it off due to reasons of money & more importantly, the lack of excessive buttons on the new units - I like the aircraft cockpit look of the older unit :-p

I was about to respond with this suggestion, but anks_at beat me to it.

I’m sure you have considered this as well, and probably decided against it as it is prohibitively expensive?

Apart from streamlining smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth, it also offers Apple CarPlay while retaining some of the aesthetics offered by the classic interface.

The biggest benefit I see is the ability to use google maps on the screen instead of using a dashboard phone mount or bothering the passenger for directions.

We visited Jungle Lodges River Tern Lodge in 2008, in our then-new Honda Civic, and found that the road surface was sub-par, not to mention the route being generally peppered with pot-holes and of course the massive speed breakers.

Not sure what the present condition of the route is, but how did you manage with your 911? It’s absolutely amazing! You’ve got some serious cojones!

We were also pleasantly surprised by how well River Tern Lodges was maintained, given that it’s a government run organisation. But back then it was relatively new. How are the cabins (the ones propped up on stilts) overlooking the river? Still in good shape?

Would love to give this drive a try sometime soon!

They are yet to release this for 997.2. I would definitely consider it when they release it. The one available for 997.1 provides the volume/menu knobs and next/prev and few other buttons. It blends the old (trip info, car settings and few other native car features) and new (carplay) beautifully to retain the original user experience feel of the car. You should certainly give it a shot - it's more than a pure modern carplay thing - they tried to retain the spirit of the old car. Very clever thing from Porsche. I'm not a fan of carplay based on my experience in other cars with carplay but the modern unit from Porsche feels like high quality BMW iDrive (which is my fav implementation of ICE across brands). Carplay is a bonus if you wish to use it.

I don't use carplay even in my cars that have it. Only two things I need: Spotify and Google maps. In my experience, Spotify works better with regular bluetooth streaming as the hardware doesn't have the overhead of running carplay thing, especially in lower budget hardware used in most non-luxury cars.

Google maps on carplay is a big plus but I'm sure experienced Indian drivers fully understand Google maps is at best an unreliable guide. Default route of set-and-forget Google maps is not the one to follow blindly in our country. I like the responsiveness and familiarity of my phone screen as I find myself needing to zoom in/out, pan the maps very frequently to reroute or check tricky junctions/lane-changes.

I'm mentally prepared for a potential tire damage which is the most likely thing to happen on such trips. GC issues are not as high risk as people imagine them to be. I carry a spare tire in the rear seat when doing outstation trips just as an extra precaution. The combination of seatbelt and backrest of the front seat works as a decent harness to hold the tire in place safely. It's a pig to move in and out though.

Their Sharavati property is much better if you want to enjoy a nice drive. River Tern Lodge is in a great location but the roads are meh and the property is also a bit too large+crowded for a quiet holiday experience. Rooms and restaurant, etc. are pretty decent in both. I love the food in JLR properties - simple and freshly prepared. For a govt run property, the staff are very courteous and pleasure to interact with.

Hi,

Probably the only travel post in a 911 out here!

Always a pleasure to read your trips.

Just a question, the spare tyre you are carrying is a space saver or a full size spare? Heard the space savers are smaller diameter and if fitted at the rear could cause diff errors?

It's a full size tire with 18" rim. The car runs on 19" wheels and I bought a full set of 18" wheels with an intention to downgrade for peace of mind. However, the 19" wheels are holding up well and they suit this car better (looks and handling). Interestingly, for my S Class that came with 17" wheels, I bought a new set of 19" to improve the look but I quickly reverted to 17" wheels as I missed the wonderful ride quality of S Class. Basically, I wasted money in both the cases but on the bright side, no longer have the itch to either upgrade or downgrade.

Quote:

Even though the car has a staggered setup, the 18" spare tire I'm using is a perfect match for the front and an acceptable match for the rear. The problem with space saver is not the diameter but that it won't be able to provide the traction and weight bearing capacity required at the rear - it's very puny - so they recommend to mount the space saver only at the front and use the front wheel to replace the damaged rear wheel.

Thankfully the FC/Greentax and related charges are same for all passenger cars. Please take the painful and pleasurable route of avoiding the Tout/agent and you will be surprised how smooth KA RTOs are to deal with (of course you need to talk the local lang).

I have been active & passive part of getting a few 15+ year old Mahindra Jeeps extend their FC/Greentax/Insu and all inclusive it should be under 10K INR. Insurance is extra.

Thank you for this information. This must be heartwarming especially for 15 year old sports car owners.
