BMW M2 Competition & M5 Competition India-bound

Mod Note: BHPian Reesnat's BMW M2 Competition Ownership Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

BMW India is reportedly planning to launch the M2 Competition and M5 Competition in India around Diwali 2018.

The BMW M2 Competition was unveiled just last month. It is based on the 2 Series coupe and is positioned above the standard M2. To differentiate it from the base M2, BMW has made a few changes to the exterior. It gets a blacked-out twin-kidney grille flanked by LED headlights and new multi-spoke dual-tone alloy wheels. On the inside, it gets an M Sport steering wheel and leather seats.

Unlike the base M2, the M2 Competition is powered by the same 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine from the M3 and M4. The twin-turbocharged engine produces 405 BHP and 550 Nm of peak torque. In the international market, the M2 is offered with a choice of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Further, BMW claims that the M2 Competition will do 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h, which can be raised to 280 km/h by opting for the Driver's Package. In India, the M2 Competition will lock horns with the Porsche 718 Cayman.

BMW is also planning to introduce the M5 Competition in the Indian market. It is positioned above the standard M5 and competes directly with the recently launched Mercedes-AMG E63 S.

The M5 Competition features styling elements like the gloss black grille and vents on the front fenders, rear lip spoiler as well as 20-inch Y-spoke dual-tone alloy wheels. Under the hood, it boasts of a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 617 BHP - 25 BHP more than the standard M5 and 750 Nm of torque. It comes equipped with an 8-speed transmission that sends power to all four wheels. The M5 Competition is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. BMW has also tweaked the suspension setup to lower the ride height by 7 mm compared to the standard M5. It comes standard with the M Sport exhaust system.

re: BMW M2 Competition & M5 Competition India-bound

Why is this being termed as a "Rumor" ? If ACI has all these details it's usually through the BMW PR agency so I guess it's pretty legit and we shouldn't be fooled to think there is ambiguity here.

BMW would definitely not be left behind in the race here with MBIL launching "S" version of their 63AMGs. The competition version M's had to start coming in. The M3/M4 were the first competition pack version to come in at the auto expo this year. The previous gen M5 also had a competition pack launched toward the end of it's life in India.

However, I am a bit disappointed with this move as it makes these cars even more hardcore and even more unaffordable. Why not get the regular 63AMGs and Ms and price them better? For instance BMW should get the regular M4/M3 and price it at 1.10cr to take on the RS5.

Correct, it's a firm decision now. In private Dealership guys have confirmed and 85 lac figure is what they also told. Of course, this figure maybe to have a feedback from the market and they may even launch at different rates, it will depend on the availability in Germany.

Our earlier news was bang on - link.

Based on what I've read online, the M2 is the 'ultimate driving machine'. Because of its size, it should be more fun in India than even the mighty M5. Top Gear UK says "A brilliant car, one of the best four-seat drives you can lay your hands on" - source. Caranddriver says "BMW’s pint-sized M2 harkens back to the original small, swift, and snappy M car, the E30-gen M3".

Even for our own sources, we'll usually add the 'Rumour' tag. Until there is an official word from the manufacturer, it remains a rumour for us.

It’s great news that BMW is launching the M2, and apart from performance it is indeed one of the best looking small little number from the German brand. That said, it would have been even better if they thought of getting the M140i as well – that would have been a slightly more affordable joy.

Isn't the M2 a straight 6?

It has a de-tuned version of the S55 in-line 6-cylinder engine from the M3/M4.

Yes, but very close in output.

I checked some overseas forums, M2 is missing M Suspension also. After adding some basic things like M Seats and Harmon system, it's going to cross 90 Lac ex-showroom. Adding Navigation and different alloys it's going to be over 95. Wonder will it be worth saving the difference over M4 given the road conditions here?

If BMW has imported some M3/ 4, we might get one on a bargain but if they have learnt their lessons from past then perhaps not and it will be a large gap of 40-45 Lac when compared with M4 which may entice some buyers in this segment.

Will be interesting to have views of others on how does this compare with 718 for our market considering pricing/ service & practicality?

Yup. As far as I remember, regular M2 has a single turbo staright 6 while the M2 competition has twin turbos like M3/M4.

The M2 had a modified version of the regular N55 engine. Now the M2 competition replaces the M2 (no more regular M2s) and gets the proper M S55 engine from the M3/4.

The M2 competition is going to be totally bonkers, can't wait to see it on our roads.

As per BMW's India website, the standard transmission of choice on the M2 would be a manual. I think it's the first time that BMW is officially offering a manual gearbox in its models sold in India.

No, It's 7-speed M-DCT. Must be an error, the brochure itself looks copy and upload job. They should have done a better job.
