Porsche 718 Cayman & Boxster - bookings open in India

Mod Note: Team-BHP's Porsche 718 Cayman Drive Report has been taken live at this link (Driven: Porsche 718 Cayman). Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Porsche India has started accepting bookings of the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster, before their official launch in the country later this year. The company has also announced prices of both these cars - the 718 Cayman costs Rs. 80.13 lakh, while the 718 Boxster is priced at Rs. 83.95 lakh. As a result, the Boxster convertible is priced higher than the Cayman coupe, unlike the previous generation cars where the opposite was true.

Both the Cayman and Boxster now come with downsized engines. A 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged mill replaces the 3.4-litre, six-cylinder unit that was found in the previous generation models. The new engine produces 300 BHP and 380 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed PDK automatic gearbox. Porsche claims that these output figures help the car in accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 275 km/h.

Porsche India will probably launch the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster next month, with deliveries starting from November 2016.

Wait, what about the S variant? The one with the 2.5-litre motor? Will that be launched later then at a higher price?
So around 1crore for a Cayman/Boxster. Which is roughly $150k (read: sticker price of a new 911 Turbo in USA). OK.
I know we have exorbiant import duties and all but this sudden realisation and this context, that the CaymanS here sells for the price of a 911 Turbo, hit me hard!

The landed cost of a 911 c2s is about 50-55lakhs, but on road price is about 2.2cr! Thats how high taxes and duties are in India.

A single unit of the 718 Cayman has been imported by Porsche into our country for homologation purposes.

The car is equipped with the newly-developed 1988cc, turbocharged gasoline powerplant, good for 300HP of power and 380Nm of torque.

Do we know if this the Cayman or the Cayman S? Typically Porsche have only launched the S versions in India, though, in this case, even the non-S is pretty potent.

This is the regular Cayman.

From what the Porsche dealer in Mumbai claims - there is no S version on the cards at the moment.
