re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Except for this one, which mentions the source as INDIA SYNDICATE, all the others appear to be abroad.

One can see quite a few present day indian cars, so one can safely assume this pic is not from long ago. Maybe its lying in some customs warehouse judging from the trailer in the background of the picture.

There appears to be another import with its rear near this jags rear. (only taillamp can be seen)

re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Pains to see so many dying a steady slow death.

Most definitely have some story of abandonment whilst some may just be neglect or cost of repairs/upkeep.

Sad.

There are many such examples in Andheri West and Lokhandwala areas too.

I hope that the green merc makes it out of there.

Check out the very 1st edition (Sep 99) of ACI. To this day, there are Miatas, Rolls Royce, Jags, Mercs, old & new Beetles, Toyotas, Land Rovers, Ferraris and what not, lying neglected, many of them for 2-3 decades together.

The problem here is that, in most cases when such a car is impounded, the penalty charged is often much higher than the car's actual price, so the importer of the car finds it wiser to forget about the car. During auctions, prospective buyers are asked to pay the value of the car + huge charges towards parking incurred by the customs/authorities. Ironically, HUMUNGOUS parts of customs space is eaten up by such cars, and the loss incurred by the govt. is much more than what they would EARN by selling these off/having lower penalty amounts.

(I've said these words before too)

Now isn't this a criminal, unethical wastage of money? Forget corruption, how can our govt. be so idiotic??

Mods, I really hope I didn't go here in your opinions. It is just that everytime I hear about imports and classics gathering dust inches deep, I feel the need to let out a rant.

re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Had gone yesterday for submitting my license papers when I saw this host of cars that had been seized by the DRI (I think most of them brand new), here's what the collection looked like :-

1. Maserati - 2 (One in White, One in Maroon)
2. Mercedes SL55AMG - 1 in red colour (the one they show in the ad)
3. BMW X6 - 1 in a off-white pearlish colour
4. Porsche Panamera - 2 (One in White, One in Black)
5. Hummer H3 - 3 (One in White, one in dark steel gray, one in Blue)
6. Lexus SUV - 2
7. Mercedes SUV (not the G class) - 1 in a very nice silver colour
8. Bentley Continental GT - 4 (One in maroon, one in white with red interiors, one in white with beige interiors, one in black)
9. Bentley (the 4-door one) - 2 (both black)
10. Rolls Royce - 1 in blue-grey-silver kind of a shade.
11. Ferrari - don't know the model but it was the bright red color
12. BMW 7series - about 10 of them
13. Merc S Class - about 10 of them
14. Toyota Landcruiser - about 6-7 of them

Am attaching the Maserati pics for you guys. Will upload the rest later.

BTW the older DRI cars are rotting in about 5ft of water where they've been dumped.

re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

I guess these are the stolen ones form the UK seized by the DRI. The link to the article describing that was also posted in some thread.

So the DRI should be auctioning these rides soon, right?

Not really, the DRI would be acting on behalf of th insurance companies who actually not own the cars. They would need to release the cars into their custody. They will then export the cars back or sell them

If this is the procedure then we can expect these cars to be lying there for a long time. Maybe few will make it to Tbhp 'Rust in Pieces' thread!

The cost of getting these vehicles back to UK and then selling them there would be higher than the sale value the insurance co will get. Its better off if they sell it here but then again the taxes here will be equal to a new car I wouldnt want to be the insurance guy who has to deal with this kind of situation....
