Pics : Mercedes 500 SEC (or the S Class Coupe)

Its still referred to as the S Class Coupe by many people. But little does everybody know that the Mercedes SEC took its form from the legendary SL Class and not the S Class. Mercedes introuduced the 4 seater SLC (SL Coupe) in the late 70's. Although it was not a proper 4-seater like todays CL's, they had usable rear seats and a fixed roof.

In the early 80's the SLC was replaced by the SEC. The first model of the SEC was the W126 SEC which was availabe in a wide range from the 380 SEC to the 560 SEC.

As the W126 evolved into the W140, it was time to replace the SEC too. So we had the SEC in the shape of the W140. Although by this time it was no longer called the SEC. The SEC nomenclature was dropped and the new model came to be known as the S500 Coupe and the S600 Coupe. These too were then replaced by the CL Class in 1998.

The above SEC is one of the very few of its kind in Mumbai. Its not the only one cos another 500 SEC was featured in one of the issues of BSMotoring. Had seen this car almost 3-4 years back when it had its original wheels. But the car is very well maintained.

Wooow looks damn well maintained. Do you got any rear pics as well. The Car looks a beauty. My favourite Mercs of all time. Todays Mercs have become more Japanese then German..

I feel more American than Japanese. The German engineering is lost. The new cars may definitely be more safer and faster, but nothing can match the build quality of the W126 and the W140. These are cars that are meant to last.

By looking at the door handles i can tell u that this car is a pre 1989 production model. Cos since the 90s the last models came without a groooved covering on the door handles. And this SEC is either a 420 sec or a 500 sec. That is cos 560 sec all came with ADS - Adapative Suspension which made the car sit lower and this one looks like it is riding on normal springs and dampers. The one thing that i cant distinguish is that colour is it Almandine Red or Ruby red?? cos again Red red was discontinued from 89 onwards.

Since this is a 500 SEC, it could be a 85 or an 86 model, cos after 86 the 500SEC was replaced by the more powerful 560SEC.

my uncle in africa still owns 560SEC from the 80s, alongwith a porsche 928.

He still cranks up those beauties from time to time. He has gone through a lot of cars, but seems to have kept these right from the late eighties.

Saw this car recently she is still intact but for some bubbles near c pillar base = sad as the owner mostly keeps her covered in an open area, and rats have eaten away some wiring. Owner won't sell :( he has another W126 560 SEL which he tried to restore/stripped and being repainted to be sold = build up seems ok as although paintwork is good some trim headlights need to be new.

The guy has a V12 jag XJ 4 door as well but hardly uses these cars = problems. Wish such guys let the car go to someone who would use it!
