Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

I recently went thru Driving school for DL renewal. I was charged 1500+200(medical) fees. It was very smooth and upon submission of application and final approval received SMS updates from VAHAAN . Since it was via Driving school, there was no postal receipt, but I had to pick up new DL from them.

Renewal was done within 30 days grace period and new DL is issued now up to age 50(-1 day).

At RTO found lot of folks doing renewal on their own. Also in Bangalore you can renew from any RTO, just need to add extra 200/- fees receipt for file transfer.

There was no biometric taken(ka41), only photo and signature. The application process is full online.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

I did DL renewal by myself. It's a straightforward process. After filling form online, got a print out, filled up the same & went to Government Doctor for a medical certificate. Picked a file cover and and envelop with stamps affixed from one of the shops at RTO. Paid the fees, did photo & signature and submitted to the guy at the designated counter. My renewed license came by Speed Post after 3 weeks.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

It is time for my DL renewal. But I also need to change my DL from Bangalore to Udupi RTO. I am told I need to get NOC from Bangalore RTO. They both are in the same state, same database, etc.

What is the procedure for getting NOC from current RTO? Where does one initiate it?

I tried applying online. But my 10 year old DL is not in the database. How do I get it into the database?

Edit: Actually, it says "Incorrect Date of Birth for the given DL No." when I enter my DL in the new format.

Well, I visited the RTO in the afternoon. The lady at the counter, the moment she saw my plastic card DL, told me I won't be in the database until it is converted into smart card.

So I gave photo copies of my DL and Aadhar for the database update, and she asked me to collect the smart card on March 15th. That is just 5 days away from the expiry.

But I will be able to collect it only after expiry since I will be away from Bangalore that week.

I think that there is a 30 or 60 day grace period from the day of expiration of your licence for you to reapply. So even if you get the card a week later, you can still immediately apply for renewal and not have to go through the whole process of applying for a DL afresh

Yeah, she said I have 30 days grace period after expiry for reapplying. Looks like I will have to renew in Bangalore itself, since I can't afford to wait another month for NOC for the transfer to Udupi. I will do that later.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

I did it myself. had to take a NOC from Mh01 ( tardeo ), since I shifted to Mh03.

NOC cost was mere 20rs, but they tell us to make payment from a shop outside RTO. They charge 50rs to make this 20rs payment online ( Was not aware of options to select ).

NOC done, went to Wadala RTO next day.
Renewal and Address change cost me Rs666, plus another 170 paid to guy for paying online and Govt doctor charges.

Definitely no need of any agent to do this stuff. Someone told me this process will soon be totally paperless and whatever partial role agents have now will also go.

Wadala RTO looks like a Jail IMO.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

I renewed my licence in July 2017.

No.

I applied for a new licence.

I was 44 then. My first 2 wheeler licence was June 1993. I had a seperate licence for 4 wheeler, issued June 1997. I had, in effect, 2 licences, of different categories. After 1997 I never carried the two. I had my 4 wheeler one on my person, converted to badge in July 2002.

Fact was, I didn't know how to drive a 2 wheeler in June 1993 and didn't know how to drive a 4 wheeler in 1997.

After 20 years and several lakh kilometers, My licence was up for renewal. My 2 wheeler licence expired in 2013 but, knowingly, I carried with it and o ly in 2017 when my 4 wheeler licence was about to expire did I tried to apply.

The boffins at the RTO, when issued licences back then, made so many mistakes in my name ghat it would require many applications and many monies.

So I ditched my old licences, test drove 2 and four wheelers, and got a licence including both.

Most funny part was, the MVI was surprised to see me in a 4 wheeler at testing ground after I test drove the 2 wheeler. He banged his head, muttered some thing
and awarded me the licence.

A Side Light : We applied for our daughter's licence, in Jan 2017. She was good with a two wheeler but in the application for DL, we applied for 2 & 4 wheelers. I asked her to drive a two wheeler and she cleared that. The MVI was expecting her to drive a 4 wheel too but she never sat in a driver's seat. I apologized and requested him to okay the 2 wheeler only. He then asked what she was doing and when I answered, he asked my daughter to come and wished her all the best and awarded 4 wheels too.

On in impersonal internet, it may sound blasphemy to many members here, but as I who had done more than 10 lakh kilometers, I, till date didn't give my daughter keys to my car.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

My DL is expiring sometime in October this year. It is registered in Chennai, and I plan to keep it that way. I reside in Bangalore.

Can I renew the license at any point before the expiry? For instance as early as next month?

Secondly, how easy is the process in Chennai? Do I need to go through some driving school or just do it in person?

Haha, this thread is an easy way to find out how many of us are in our 40's...data science at its best :P

PS: Here's something I found, worth a read I guess: https://wikiprocedure.com/index.php/...Driver_License

Went through this very recently; mine was from another state and expired 8 months ago. When I visited the RTO they requested me to get a NOC from the other state (or) suggested me to go through the LLR route as it takes less time compared to the NOC route.

1. You can renew your license as long as its within 5 years from date of expiry or little earlier.

2. The process is straight forward in Chennai, where your application, fee payment and slot selection is managed online. Just go there and join the queue prior to appointment time. Have the RC book, insurance, PUC all in order for the vehicle you are driving.

3. Above 40 years, get your eye tested (vision, color identification etc.,) and the doctor should be able to give you a certificate for driving (Form 1-A)

Thank you!

So I guess, if you're under 40 a Doctor's certificate is not required. That's a relief.

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

Hello Folks,
Just got my Licence renewed at the Andheri RTO. I had converted my licence from the booklet to the smart card in 2008-09, so just for the benefit of those who may be in the same boat as me and unfortunately i could not get much clarity then.

- The entire process like has been mentioned in the thread can be filled online
- If you have a booklet or a normal card then your physical presence for the biometrics is
needed
- If you already have a smart card, all you have to do is fill up the entire thing online.
Even the form no 9 that has to be uploaded comes with your digital signature, pic and
most other details. Only a few changes that you need have to be filled by you and can be
uploaded.
- Post payment ,and you keeping aside your receipts, all you have to do is have the forms
sent across to the RTO. If you have the smart card licence already you need not go there
at all, anybody with some initiative to ask for a few directions(three to four to be precise)
and run to a few windows can do it. The last guy( a cop actually) just takes the
documents and will tell you " aapka ho gaya, abhi post mein aayega"
For a few places that you may get caught up at there are several youtube videos where
they show you how to go about it.
The agent had quoted me Rs 1800 for a renewal with licence change. Got it done in Rs 673. hope this helps

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

My licence is due for renewal on July 14th, when I will turn sixty. Las renewal was done during July'15. It is not a smart card but the older type. I usually engage a driving school fellow for all my RTO needs. H says I have to apply a month in advance, it will take that long for the RTO to give me a date. I am apprehensive of going there under the current situation, but he says there is no other go. He says they take up only a very limited number of licences per day.

He says I can apply even up to a month after the date of expiry, and even after expiry it can be done by paying a fine of Rs 200 per month. But still the time frame will hold. Meantime if there is a road check I will have a problem. Seems I can't avoid visiting the DS first and the RTO later. Any online solution for this?

Re: Driving Licence renewal woes - Medical fitness certificate required!

My licence got expired in August 2020. Need to renew now. I am in Bangalore. I got mine originally from indranagar RTO. I have now shifted to a new address. When I go online on the parivahan website, it does not give me an option to enter the new address. In the place where I have to enter the new address ( to enter on the smartcard ), it asks me to put the same address as what is seen in the " Exiting DL ". If i put that address, the DL may get send to the old address.

Anyone knows how to do a change of address as well as get a renewal process done online ?

My original license is from KL. When I chose the new RTO as KA-01, I got an option to enter the new address and the application form mentions two line items, Renewal of DL and Change of Address. Maybe if you change the RTO to a different one in Bangalore, you might get an option for address change.

The fee payment failed for me and there is no option to retry the payment. Looks like I will have to start afresh
