Fengal did too, but fortunately not in Chennai. Mylam in Villupuram district received 500 mm rain in 21 hours.

Yes Pondy 495, Mailam 508, Villupuram 510, Tiruvannamalai 368, Tindivanam 370 has been the carnage south of us.

Thankfully rains have stopped at these stations as of this evening.

Hello there,

I am planning to drive to coimbatore this morning. Given the rain situation is it wise to take the villupuram attur route or would you recommend the vellore krishnagiri route. Google maps indicate a flood warning for ginger river. Thanks.

Heard the onward towards Villupuram is diverted on a single lane (not sure)

Started yesterday night to Chennai. Solid drizzle throughout. Due to Villupuram- vikravandi road damage , vehicles are diverted at Madapattu ( after Parikkal) to Thirukovilur - Thirvuvanamalai - Ginjee- Tindivanam. The detour roads are really good

I see no disruption of traffic as of today .

Bulk of the rains fell roughly in a 24 hour period though in many cases the numbers were split into two days due to the 6 AM cut off for rainfall numbers. For example in the case of Villupuram it received almost 30 cms by Noon on 1st December which was counted against the 2nd December rainfall.Heavy rains started for Pondy and surrounding areas only after 6 PM and gradually pushed in land into Villupuram district from there on.

Re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Drove in the city this weekend for the first time in 6 weeks or so. I've begun to really hate driving here nowadays because of a few unsavoury auto and cab drivers (and the occasional entitled personal car driver) with no road manners, aggressively cutting people off, even brake checking if you honk to express concern at being pushed into the median. It's a completely different scenario where I've been staying out in the ECR (where I look forward to every day I get to drive my car!). It is definitely better than it was a year or so ago, there are only a few such individuals nowadays, but they totally ruin the experience for me. I don't like confrontation, I don't think 80-90% of road users do, but these people seem to get a high off of being rude and aggressive!

How do you put up with such road users? I tried just letting them pass whenever I see them, but if you give them even a little bit of space more than usual, they seem determined to pass no matter what, even risking a collision. It only started becoming a noticeable stressor for me once I calmed down and started driving slower after staying overseas for a couple of years.

I'm considering stopping driving in the city altogether and just hiring a chaffeur when I am able to afford it. I'd rather save my energy to do the things that are actually worth it. What do you all think?

Re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Looks like these days traffic police are very intense in booking cases. Either quota has increased multifold or Govt desperate for revenue.
I was driving in ECR and wanted to take a u-turn, patiently waiting at the rightmost lane till the other side traffic stops for red. There was a right arrow turn signal and I took the turn just a sec before it turned green, however ensured that opposite traffic stopped.
There was traffic police waiting and once I took the turn, stopped me asking for DL. They told that I jumped the signal and have to get my license suspended for the offence.
I have to apologise and some diplomatic talk later came out of the situation.
So people from Chennai, Drive carefully, even on taking u-turn and drive within speed limits. Based on new rules, DL could be suspended for speeding or signal jumping even for first offense.

Absolutely. Another vulnerable place to be aware of is when someone does a U-turn toward Phoenix Mall from Saidapet or Five Furlong Road. There is no U turn for Phoenix Mall, thus one must go right to the 100-foot road and then make a U turn. I discussed and had everything explained with the traffic cop.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When we drive from ECR/Thiruvanmiyur to the Tidel signal, we cannot see the signal light to turn right towards Madhya Kailash. The signal is situated at the far end and has a lower height. Many times, the MTC buses from OMR arrive and park to turn right to Thiruvanmiyur, obstructing signal vision (here the photo depicts buses from Madhya Kailash towards OMR ). This is a dangerous place since several types of vehicles cross at the intersection. I have sent an email to ADGP - Traffic office, Highways Dept and CC. Hope they raise the signal post and keep one near the median on the Thiruvanmiyur - Tidel road.

Its surprising to see that there are still few good souls in traffic police who can do that. Based on my experience, both traffic and rules has gone to dogs. Very recently I got speeding ticket near Neelankarai, ECR. The challan with car photo did not have any details on speed which I was driving and actual speed limit. Everyone driving in ECR knows how pathetic the roads are and with recent road work, its not possible to cross 50KMPH. Since I drive a out of state vehicle, not in a position to contest the challan, just paid the amount to be in safer side.

The U turn at the Thiruvanmiyur - Tidel Park junction was opened yesterday, and there was a traffic jam as vehicles arriving from Madhya Kailash wanted to take the U turn while vehicles coming from Thiruvanmiyur wanted to turn left towards the OMR. To add to the complexity, there is fairly a large bus stop frequented by share autos.

The image portrays the commotion due to the bus stop.

Any idea on the situation now? It would be atrocious if the traffic jam had increased due to the fly over!

I've been using the flyover since it was opened (been waiting for it to be inaugurated honestly) waiting time has reduced at this signal considerably. There's only one signal now, from OMR to ECR/Adyar and once they close this off, the signal would be redundant and one can breeze past the junction.

This U-turn bridge is beneficial for smaller vehicles. There is some confusion when vehicles from ECR/Adayar and MadhyaKailash converge to use this flyover to reach Tidel or farther. A median separates the bridge's entrance. Buses from ECR/Pondy strain to maneuver.

I believe the traffic specialists did not validate this use case. If a motorist comes from ECR and wishes to return to ECR, he or she must take this U bridge and drive all the way to the next U bridge before arriving at this crossroads and turning left.

In my opinion, the U bridge's position is poorly planned.
