If just new laid road wasn't enough, they are putting side walking footpath for pedestrians. Good move

My office is 100m from Bommanahalli signal. The signal at surface level is completely blocked. My office admin is telling us that traffic jams are there from Electronics City and Forum Mall on either side.
BETL is crawling, as I can see from my office window.

Any idea why this protest today? Looking at the photo posted by BTP on FB, seems to be a big time protest by people. Wondering if it was a planned protest march or a flash one?

Flash strike by Garment Factory Workers Unions. No idea why. There are a log of garment factories in Bommanahalli, almost all workers are out on the street at the junction.
I saw a bunch of workers at the tea stall next to my office. There is also a liquor shop there, so I guess you know what comes next.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

From what I can see from people stuck in traffic, there seems to be ambulances with sirens blaring for more than an hour, stuck in this traffic. Some one has posted pictures of 'protesters' barging in to brand factory in what looks like looting. Sad state of affairs.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Couple of people from my apartment are stuck in this jam from 11.30. One of them just reported that the protest is turning violent. To add to his woe, his car just ran out of petrol.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Its a bit sad that the city police own "intelligence wing" seems to get clue less in such cases. Such a huge amount of people just cannot magically appear at the spot. In very many cases the leader of the strikers would generally inform the police about their plans and then even seek permission. The police would also deploy forces accordingly. Now if that does not happen, ideally there would be "informers" who can inform the police that some thing is cooking.

Where as here it seems nothing of that sort happened. Traffic Police gets the first hit, and that too on a Monday morning. Looks like it is always the techie crowd who gets caught in all this, and every striking group now knows which group to harass so that they get adequate coverage/publicity. If such a thing would have happened in the "show piece" locations of BLR: M.G Road, Vidhana Soudha or even the Railway station area these folks would have been lathi charged in no time.

Lathi charging 10K people? That would be How to Start a Riot 101.

The thing is, the amendment was announced in the budget back in February. Today's couldn't have been a flash strike.

No - Lathi charge the coming in crowds so that they don't reach 10K levels . Don't think it is a "flash mob" kind of a case. From the news; these folks were protesting against the amendments brought in to the PF related Acts. Some of them were also revoked after people protested. But all that happened some months back.

Looks like there is a more political angle to this, as this "flash strike" was not on some immediate grievance. Some leaders have taken over the reigns of some parties in Karnataka. Some other parties may not be happy with that development.

And how would cops know who to beat up and who not to? Or they just charge at anyone who is in the general vicinity of any area they feel will become crowded?

In any place where there have been lathi charges in the past, and the police generally have some control on things they would be able to really understand who are the trouble making crowd, which route they are taking and in very many cases their intentions as well (to harass other road users, to start a riot or to cause general mayhem). Here it seems to be the classic case of "Do what you want for some time, we would do nothing, and you can disperse once you have had your share of fun. Any way your gimmicks are not going to effect the high & mighty in the city, nor would their normal routine be disturbed".

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Looks like situation is just limping to normalcy on Hosur Road. All traffic police inspectors and top brass seems to be in the area.

To add to problems there were two bmtc buses broken down near Roopena Agrahara (towards city).
