It isn't. Nobody is living in a different city or a parallel universe. Looking the other way, or just not looking doesn't make something go away. Lakhs of government and private cameras exist and thousands of hours of recorded footage are churned out by the hour. Heck, get out of your house and drive in any direction for just ten minutes. I can guarantee nine times out of ten, you will see ten people breaking rules. That's a bold statement, upon acting on it, we may realize that it was being generous. Oh, well.
Nobody is out there to get you. A greater percentage of educated IT folks live in the city and on the internet as well, than other comparable cities. The traction on this thread is a part of that skewed demographics, along with other systemic issues that don't exist, feebly exist or cannot exist in some other cities like Delhi and Hyderabad.

Xenophobic remarks are an eyesore and reek of a sense of non existent entitlement. Bangalore is as much a city of the migrants as yours. They pay the same taxes, drink the same water and contribute as much or, as little, to this city. The sooner both parties(Should be one single party) understand this, the better the city should be. No wonder the British found it easy in the country. God Damn.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Half of Bangalore's traffic problems, even assuming everything else stayed as it is, would be solved if people stopped cutting/switching lanes impatiently.

Our 'See gap, fill gap' instinct is a worse offender than traffic volume.

Agree 100 %, Majority (not all) of the problems faced in bangalore could be solved by lane discipline and giving others right of way so that they can merge into traffic. Here everyone is cutting each other off and it just piles on.

On top it would be less stressful.

That, along with strict action against wrong-side driving and haphazard parking can solve nearly 100% of the problem. Throw in action against encroachment and we'd be Utopian.

Nicely put. Lane discipline especially by BMTC buses will reduce traffic bottlenecks. I have never seen a BMTC bus stop at the bus bay in Bangalore. Several times they stop in the road before a signal which is green blocking all traffic behind them and then move after it has turned red. Of course they can jump the signal because they are legally allowed, but you are stuck for another 2 mins. After waiting behind the bus.

About allowing others to merge in, I guess you have not been driving in Bangalore. Here the taxi/ auto will aggressively merge in front of you and then immediately stop to check his phone/ pick up a customer. The 2 wheeler will squeeze in front of you if you allow him to merge and then start window shopping.

No Siree, I don't allow anyone to merge unless it's an ambulance or Lal Bathi gaadi. Or if the other driver is too aggressive.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Lane cutting, while a big problem, is very difficult for traffic cops to stop. However, driving on the wrong side of the road, is so easily punishable and such a big menace. If we need the traffic situation to be improved, the largest and lowest-hanging fruit in my opinion is wrong side driving. Increase fines and do a very stringent drive to catch culprits for 3 months and one will see visible improvements.

Terror on MG Road - Commuters beware - https://bangaloremirror.indiatimes.c.../107018475.cms

Putting a pin on the xenophobic immigrants destroying the city rant, incoming taxes be damned , can we all agree that the above move and arrogance on the part of BBMP is a full slap in the face of all the citizens?
In spite of all the protests and petitions, the chief, to paraphrase the above article says that "despite all the protests etc, we will whitetop the MG road stretch". Meaning all the other roads in Bangalore are in prime pristine condition with no potholes and broken pavements and a perfectly laid road which sees extremely heavy traffic will be ripped apart and relaid using cement. If not metro construction, BBMP has a lot of ammo up its sleeve to make sure that no commute is hassle free.
I am in no way against the metro construction since I see it as a long term pain for long terms gains, but this is bluntly a very long unnecessary pain for barely some incremental benefits.

  1. BBMP is a law unto itself.
  2. This BBMP Chief is evidently a completely
  3. Insensitive lout.
  4. Unless a good Political party wins the Corporation Elections they have no hope of coming to power and they probably never will because Bangalore is deeply ridden with caste based politics and no breath of fresh air can possibly enter because of the closed coterie of deeply entrenched politicians.
  5. Indeed it is monumental stupidity to break MG Road and do white topping. Having said this, my last drive on MG Road a couple of weeks ago showed that the tarmac surface was broken and uneven in several places. If they would lay proper tarmac it would be good. Instead of white topping and wasting money, it is better they use the money to clean up and repair all the other broken roads of the city.
  6. Ref ‘Benefits’ - the only beneficiaries in this will be the Politicians. It is a well known fact that all this White Topping is mere Whitewash and a massive boost to corrupt moneymaking.

At this rate, Bangalore as a city and the much vaunted ‘Brand Bengaluru’ is doomed with nary a hope of redemption in this lifetime.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Super Explanation and some really good points. Projects like The Bangalore Stonehenge stand as a monument of the BBMP's inefficiency, greed and apathy towards the city. Rather than brand Bengaluru, such activities move towards de-branding Bengaluru

One of my friends sent me his dashcam video from today of a pretty comical accident where a R15 squid was apparently wildly swerving around and being a public nuisance before ending up getting some karmic retribution right in front of him and
it pretty much perfectly illustrates the instinct you mentioned.

Don't know what to say. Going by how long the other white-topped roads took and how long the finishing took, even after the road was declared open, I shudder to think what the effect will be on traffic there for the duration. Thankfully, there is at least the Metro as an alternative to navigate that stretch. Of course that won't work for everyone.

What they will now do is use this as an excuse to allow traffic inside Cubbon Park even on Saturdays and Sundays. The park is a traffic-free haven on weekends. It's giving back some public space to the general public. Now I hope they don't roll that back.

Wish all these idiots could be subject to such swift justice! (Though that poor car he rammed into was not at fault.)

It's really becoming too blatant, saw an auto guy going completely on the wrong side of the road and yelling at a bike guy who was going the correct way and just objected to being blocked! Shouldn't have, but joined in and yelled at the auto guy too and he backed off once he realized he no longer can claim the 'local language' advantage. Idiots think they can bully anyone. Sad, pathetic mentality that locals can bully "outsiders", even if they are in the wrong.

Bangalore’s mysterious ‘shrouded’ traffic lights and all.
Wonder when, if ever, they will be unveiled to the normal road users.

These are the much-touted AI-powered traffic lights being rolled out across BLR.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Regarding the tunnel, it might help a few intersections in between. What about the point where traffic enters the tunnel and leaves the tunnel? These will be new choke points and traffic jams will ensue.

We already see jams under Hebbal flyover where traffic has to wait to enter the flyover and another along NICE road. You need lot of land at the interchanges into and out of signal free roads. Until then nothing will help common citizens. These things do help some people and we all know that.

Not exactly in Bangalore but near Talakadu. What was the tractor driver hoping to achieve. There was already a car line behind me. The bus was presumably picking up passengers from its first stop.
