Govt mulls Annual toll pass at 3000 Rs and Lifetime toll pass at 30,000

The government is likely to introduce an annual toll pass for Rs 3,000 and a lifetime pass for Rs 30,000 for private car owners, allowing unlimited use of national highways.

Looks like a good proposal for those making use of the new toll based highways and expressways.

Might as well charge some 5,000 extra in the road tax we pay at time of buying a car.

They can call it as Highway Are Fully TAxed or The HAFTA.

I am so looking forward to it. ₹3000 for one year of unlimited use would definitely be beneficial - heck, one round trip to Kolkata or Mumbai would recover twice the price.

Maybe someone in the government is going to read this and jack up the price!

Its a win-win move both for the private car owners and also the Government.
This move will also save tonnes of precious fuel (import/foreign exchange savings for the Government) by avoiding the fuel wastage due to vehicle idling by several lakhs of vehicles all over the country at queues in toll booths.

A potential downside is that the Government may no longer be incentivised to maintail the tolled roads at the current quality levels if the huge stream of toll money stops getting collected.

This is such great news! If this passes, I will surely opt for it the next day.

However, we will need to look at the fine print as well; what I mean is if there is any chance that this pass can be cancelled or diluted or limited at any future date. For eg: the Delhi NCR folks who bought Diesel cars earlier were promised 15 years of road-eligibility with an option to extend it further, we all know how it was limited to 10 years. For this reason, I will be hesitant to opt for lifetime pass and rather take the risk with annual pass.

re: Govt mulls Annual toll pass at 3000 Rs and Lifetime toll pass at 30,000

A return journey from Calcutta to Ranchi, a distance of around 400 kms, costs around 1300 bucks in tolls. Going by what is proposed seems like a fairy tale !!

Far too many questions arise here. A few come to my mind immediately-

- What happens to the massive amount of toll collection which the operators are set to lose ? Will they be compensated?

- What happens to the commercial cab operators ? Will they agree to such disparity if the option is only for the private car owners ?

- What happens to the commercial truck operators ?

- As of now, the proposal for the pass is optional. The Fastag was also optional once upon a time until it became mandatory and clubbed along with new car purchase.

These are few of the questions which comes to the mind by just reading through the news. I will be very surprised if this pass thing becomes a reality but if it does, I will be more than happy. The authorities who don’t even think of lowering the fuel prices when they easily can, for fear of losing revenue, will be the last ones to be amenable to an idea where they are slated to lose so much of toll money !!

If they really want to give relief to people, they can start by lowering the fuel prices and by removing the special duties they levy on the sale of fuel !!

Hold on your horses, I mean cars
Some social media users are saying the annual charges are applicable for one toll gate. Still need more clarification, the news seems too good to be true.

re: Govt mulls Annual toll pass at 3000 Rs and Lifetime toll pass at 30,000

I have a toll plaza in my hometown in Kerala where the monthly toll pass rates are below.
  1. Cars, vans, and jeeps: Rs 2,760 for a monthly pass
  2. Light commercial vehicles: Rs 4,830 for a monthly pass
  3. Buses and trucks: Rs 9,660 for a monthly pass
  4. Multi-axle vehicles: Rs 15,525 for a monthly pass

Again, remember, this is the monthly pass for just 1 toll booth. And the government is proposing an annual toll of 3K? Sorry to say, but what are these people smoking? Whatever they are using, I hope and pray they are immediately caught and booked under Indian laws.

re: Govt mulls Annual toll pass at 3000 Rs and Lifetime toll pass at 30,000

First, let's wait to see, if it is really 3K per annum.

Second, the article reads 'No new pass has to be bought as they will be embedded in FAS ..

Read more at:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/a...campaign=cppst

so effectively, toll gate stays and we will have to pass through it.
Not sure how this would benefit us in reducing time or limiting the wastage of fuel?

Of course at 3K per annum it's a significantly lower than what some cars would pay otherwise.

Wasn't this supposed to be called "road-tax" ?

The thing is this will be tied to one car only, what if you have multiple cars?

Sounds too good to be true.

Is this the carrot on the stick to make people adopt the new GPS based toll system? (gulp)

Re: Govt mulls Annual toll pass at 3000 Rs and Lifetime toll pass at 30,000

This is a great move and will be very helpful for people who love long highway trips.

But, there are a few things to think about before buying these annual or lifetime passes.
  • First, this pass might not work on all roads, only on NHAI roads. For example, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Yamuna Expressway aren't part of NHAI.
  • Second, this pass is linked to the vehicle's registration number, not the owner's name. This might be a problem for those who use different cars for different occasions.

If you use one car and often take highway trips, this pass is definitely a good option.

Lifetime = 15 years (lifetime of the vehicle)?
Unlimited = one to-and-fro trip per day?

Cheers

I think it's high time when we come out of this fantasy world of politicians

Gurgaon to Airport/ Dhaula Kuan sees some of the highest traffic in India. If connected by train, I guess that this can take at least 30% load from the road. A simple Metro line of less than 10 Km can do such wonders, and we have been hearing some out-of-the-world solutions for over a decade

We have seen Cable Cars to flying Taxis and whatnot

Only recently did GOI announce the Distance-based toll and how it is going to work for users and now someone has suddenly come out with this yearly plan
