Govt plans WhatsApp-based payment system for traffic challans

The process of paying traffic challans is set to become a whole lot easier with a new payment system. The government of Delhi has issued a tender to develop a WhatsApp Business and Application Programming Interface-based solution for the collection of traffic fines.

Here’s how the new WhatsApp-based payment system works: A notification about the traffic violation with the fine amount will be sent directly to the owner’s phone via WhatsApp. The messages will be sent in Hindi and English.

Clicking on the payment option will take the user directly to a payment gateway, with options to pay via UPI apps like Google Pay, BHIM, etc. Once a payment is made through one of these apps, push notifications will be sent every time a new challan is generated. It will also remind the user of unpaid challans.

Currently, the government’s Parivahan e-challan website handles all traffic challan payments.

Hi, I would like to understand how a person will identify whether the traffic police person is genuine or fake. In case some fake person wearing a traffic police uniform, stops me and shares with me the WhatsApp payment link to make traffic violation challan payment and I get robbed online, who will be responsible.

New avenues to start novel scam ideas. Am sure this will be scrapped right after a few months. The police is not able to handle the FedEx scam yet and now if they start collecting challans through WhatsApp, God knows what kind of Pandora's box it will open in terms of cheating people. Needs to come with a host of security features otherwise it will be a failure.

Too much convenience can be harmful to one's physical and financial health .

Might as well put out a tender for 'scam me' neon signs at this point.

Oh man! If only they were this much eager to repair the roads proactively than just creating new avenues for revenue collection.

Web portals are fine. Don't think this much intrusion in my personal life would be helpful.

Isn't there already SMS based system or is it only on some roads ? It should contain a link to the parivahan or govt site where you can confirm the violation with proof if possible after some authentication. The link should be on that site, not paying directly.

What are they trying to solve ? People not becoming aware of violation and payment pending ?

Yeah. Let's go ahead and also share our government data with Meta Inc.

Will these babus ever learn. What is the MoD thinking about this?

Why can't this be built over BHIM or any *Pe.

This is the biggest issue currently. I know people who are still not aware of parivahan or vahan site and they hence treat challan sms as spam. Those who knowingly break rules don't pay deliberately is a story for another day. You often read news about people having challans running into thousands sometimes.

I think the notification part could be useful on WhatsApp to reach larger populace. The payment part I doubt will happen over WhatsApp directly, otherwise it is a slippery slope that needs to be treated very carefully to avoid scams. We read about these phishing scams everyday and you don't want to open up a new avenue for the fraudsters.
