Ceat Securadrives are pretty good with wet and dry grip this is based on my usage in extreme rains in Kerala and complete dry weather in TN.

There could be many things that went wrong that resulted in the crash such as the speed carried, the steering inputs, the braking, reaction time etc.

Hyundais aren't known for their braking either.
That may not be the only reason for the car losing traction under braking. However, there were no steering inputs at all when I hit the brakes. The steering inputs came only after the lose of traction.

I agree on the point about Hyundai. I am still not very happy with the braking of this car, but that is for another post.

We checked with insurance and they said they will not claim it and we were free to do so.

Glad you are safe post this horrific crash. +1 to Seatbelts saves lives .

Regarding NCAP there are more nuances to the test than just the stars.

Looking at the images, its seems the cross members (crumple zones) are less affected (bypassed) and roof has taken a hit.

Implying no under run protection in the trailer. Image of trailer taken from random Google image search. Member ChiragM can confirm if the trailer is similar.

Correlating a I20 with that of a Creta (Crossover with similar FWD layout) in a similar trailer rear ending situation.
Hyundai i20 N Line totaled | Car saved me | Claimed return-to-invoice (RTI) insurance-picture3.jpg

Chosen Creta for
- Same Hyundai family
- Similar FWD
- Same 3 *** (Hyundai Creta & i20 get 3-star GNCAP safety rating; Toyota Urban Cruiser gets 4)

Extrapolating the images in a similar situation shows the point of impact is much lower in Creta.
Hyundai i20 N Line totaled | Car saved me | Claimed return-to-invoice (RTI) insurance-picture4.jpg

The point of impact does correlate with the images obtained during crash testing in GNCAP (Hyundai Creta & i20 get 3-star GNCAP safety rating; Toyota Urban Cruiser gets 4).

Hyundai i20 N Line totaled | Car saved me | Claimed return-to-invoice (RTI) insurance-picture6.jpg

So GNAP * results are a representation of how cars will behave Under similar test conditions. A rear end crash with a no under run protected trailer cannot be compared with GNAP frontal offset testing .

Dear ChiragM, since it was a RTI settlement, maybe you should have chosen a Creta N line, perhaps.

Disclaimer : The weight of the cars (i20 and Creta) also influences crash results, as it differs and that will affect the kinetic energy dissipation, by movement of the trailer upon impact.

Yes, it is an underride crash where crumple zones are bypassed and the impact will be directly on the windshield. Underrides are caused by the height difference between passenger cars and trucks.
To reduce the severity of an underride crash, trucks must have built to standard underride guards on both front and sides.
However, almost all the trucks and tractors in India do not have underride guards.

The only way to keep ourselves safe is by staying away from them and not tailgating other vehicles etc.

As we have trucks of different sizes and there is no standardization, we cannot say any vehicle would be safe as we cannot choose whom we are going to hit. Best bet is to stay away.

This is a Creta underride.

You are the first person that I have heard of who's received a refund from the RTO. My case was eerily similar to yours minus the RTI. My RTO was elsewhere and had to be communicated over mail and phone. They did not even bother to reply despite 3 months of my effort.

Re: Our first car comes home | Hyundai i20 N Line DCT | Ownership Review

Hi ChiragM, Hope you are doing great now and it is glad you come out safe and have recovered from the physical and mental trauma through the entire course of incidents. I am not sure if it's appropriate to point these out now. But I felt it would be worth mentioning a few things you could have done to avoid it:

1. Over taking through the left lane should be avoided under any circumstances if it is possible. As per the left lane traffic that we follow in India, the base positioning of our vehicle should be to the left and the right lanes should be used only to perform overtakes and just after that, one should return to the base position. I know it's difficult to follow, as we have no lane discipline followed in our country.

2. If at all, you need to use your left lane to overtake, make sure you have enough visibility straight ahead to perform a safe overtake. (In your case you were already positioned between cars, which leads to limited visibility). The minutes you lose spending in slow traffic is always better than what you lose in the case of an accident.

3. The tires (brand/quality), crash rating of the cars, safety equipment or even driving skills cannot have much relevance in saving your life or belongings beyond a certain limit. There are incidents where people get killed while driving a million-dollar car with all the top equipment.

4. What happened in your case is an oversteer. Once the traction is lost with hard braking, even a slight action on steering can result in the car going out of control. In a scenario like this, you do a panic brake and hold onto the brake pedal even when the traction is lost. So when you try to make corrections on steering after the skid, what you do is steer in one direction and counter steering in the other direction to bring the car straight. Here this might not work as you intended as you are still braking hard and even a small steering input translates to larger lateral movement of the car. The way to reduce it is to take off the foot from the brake pedal completely or partially (depending on the situation) or maybe slight accelerator input and try to get control back. I know it's not easy to follow these in such a short fraction of time.

Anyway, congratulations on the new car and wish you many happy miles on it. Drive safe.

Great to know that you came out of this safely. Looks like a pretty heavy impact. These can happen to the best of us and no amount of skill sometimes can help. That’s why I am a firm believer that machines need to get smarter considering the amount of machines on road. ADAS and all electronic safety aids are important and should always be turned on. I have on many occasions even in this forum have seen statements that these aids are annoying or that they trust their driving skills more than these aids. It’s a big mistake. Hope people reading this thread realise that not everyone can be lucky and safe so always trust the manufacturer’s advice and use all available safely aids and precautions that your automobile comes with. Cheers

Thank you for detailing your ordeal and very glad to hear you walked away with minor bruises. It is a reminder of the complex processes involved with law, insurance, dealer and others on what the aftermath is after an accident.

The rear of the car went up and the car landed perpendicular to the road on the right lane.
I am wondering why the car slid, did the ABS not kick in?

Who paid 2.5L to the tractor driver? Did you pay it or insurance company?

Glad to hear you came out of it safe.

One question though. You said the other party demanded Rs. 50K repair costs that you paid out of your pocket. You also took care of their medical expenses. Then, why did they file a case for 3rd party claim settlement?

I also commend the fact you trusted the car and did not hesitate to go for the same car again, and how you handled this ordeal.

Completely agree with you. Most people against ADAS drive aggressively and want to almost touch the vehicle in the front, especially while overtaking and are then unhappy with the warnings. I would never ever purchase a vehicle without ADAS. I am a very careful driver and always keep the requisite distance and never speed. Therefore, I rarely see any warnings from ADAS. However, there have been a few times over the past couple of years where AEB was activated or a warning received and it is comforting to know that there is a secondary layer of protection in cases where I might get distracted. This has happened on my MG Astor, as well as Tesla Model Y.

Well said, the major load paths in cars are at the floor or waist level — that's what makes unprotected underrides especially dangerous. Even though the i20's passenger compartment held up decently in Global NCAP's offset test, we cannot use every crash to expand that configuration's limited relevance. That the passenger cell's survival space held up at all is probably down to speed and luck. What is certainly not luck is ChiragM's decision to wear his seatbelt.

And congratulations ChiragM on the new i20.

There is a key take away here. I'll leave it with you on how you want to think about it.

It feels there was certain amount of speed involved and not much distance to the vehicle in front, for you to react in time.

As a simple rule, maintain a minimum 2 seconds to the vehicle in front of you. To better understand this, watch the vehicle in front of you passing some landmark. Could be a pole or a tree. Anything. Now start counting in your head. If you're passing that same pole in less time, you're too close to the vehicle in front. You want to double, make that time 3x or even 4x if its wet or slippery on the road.

Tyres generally hold up for a lot longer than 6 months so I would not necessarily blame them. Ceat is not some rubbish brand either. I'd put my faith in them over some of the cheaper known brands in our market.

From what you describe, getting out of an accident seems the easy part. Its post that, that seems more painful. I just wish we had clear cut processes and follow that. First its dealing with the people, who try and extort money from you. Then the cops who won't play nice. The Insurance company who thinks its a great idea to fix a car thats essentially totaled. And they want to pick on the RTI as a means to decide whether repair should be done or not. In no way can that car be deemed safe, as it came out of the factory, even if they do manage to fix it. Its crazy.

Glad you made it our in one peace.

re: Hyundai i20 N Line totaled | Car saved me | Claimed return-to-invoice (RTI) insurance

The aftermath of accident involving all those insurance, police, courts are worse than the accident itself, it's a stressful process, without help it can be painful, glad that there was help. Myself had underwent similar situation and the stressful part was in the RTO

First thing I did purchasing my creta dct was to replace the stock JK tyres with pirelli.

I don't understand how manufacturers provide same tyre for all engine options? Doesn't a more powerful engine require better tyres?

For new car buyers I'll recommend to prioritize on safety upgrades more than cosmetic updates.

While purchasing insurance, opt for all add ons, it'll only cost few thousand more but will save lacs in fateful time.
