Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

While I have been pulled over at random a lot of times and let go after checking of documents, I was once stopped and fined Rs.1000 one morning for speeding in Goa on a bridge going from Siolim to Chopdem for going 43kmph on a 30kmph speed limit bridge. The signs for which were rather easy to miss when wearing sunglasses especially on a bright and sunny morning like the one we were travelling on since they were either faded or under the shade of a building!

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

I've been fined a total of 3 times in 24 years of driving + riding career.

2007 - Riding on a footpath near palace cross signal (before the fly-over). Though common sense kept prompting not to do, the devil takes over sometimes and you pay the price. This was the first time I had ever paid a fine or had to deal with cops. On this occasion the cop was determined to teach me a lesson (letting go 5 other motorists before me) and harassed me for about 2 hours before giving back the keys to my bike and accepting a generous payment. This left me traumatized for a longtime such that I had given up riding and even going the same route. I slowly got out of it, probably after 5-6 months.

2015 - 2 times for exceeding speed limit, once by 10km/h and other time by 15 km/h, both, below the e-city flyover while returning from Chennai to Bangalore on the Polo GT TDi. Regretful and irresponsible, however I was not doing insane stunt speeds for a definite odd outcome.

Lesson learnt both times, now I keep a check on the challans website of BTP for all my cars + close relatives cars as well.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

I've been driving since 2016 when I first got a learner's permit for a scooter. So far I've either been lucky or have had a good sense of road discipline to avoid paying fines till one unfortunate day in June 2024 when I was taking my mom, my grandmom's younger sister from Canada and my Canadian cousin brother to Ooty. After passing via the Bandipur section, a cop pulled us over and unfortunately for me, I had forgotten to renew the PUC . Luckily my mom said something to him in Kannada and I ended up paying 250 rupees and the cop who caught me told his senior I was fined for not wearing a seatbelt. When the senior asked me why, I told him I had a stomach ache and he let me off 😂😂. But yes now, I ensure each and every document for all the cars in the family is upto date.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Been fined once in 15 years of driving. Must have been 2011, 3-4 years into owning my first car. I was late for a hospital visit for my granny having been stuck at a massive traffic jam. When it eased out I let the horses jump and was fined for doing 66kph in a 60kph zone.

It was as embarrassing to step out to pay the fine as it might have been to get a poor grade in an exam and your most-disliked teacher walloping you.

In general, all through my driving years, my biggest concern has been the lack of clarity around speed limits as in Bangalore and other cities, different zones have different speed limits and there isn't clear signage all the time.

While I’m no lawyer, I’m quite certain any info voluntarily shared here can and will be used against you if there is a serious traffic accident in the future and the prosecution goes digging into your past looking for ways to prove you were a bad/dangerous driver.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

I have been fined for 3 times over the course of 9 years of Driving.

1. Over speeding (2015): Doing 75 in a 60. This was also in 2015, when I just started driving
2. Stop line violation (2018): Kolkata has them in many signals. This is a camera-based system
3. Red light violation (2021): Actually, crossed during yellow light.

That being said, I have been caught multiple times and have escaped without paying anything.
In one particular incident, I actually splashed water on my eyes before getting out of my car and started crying in front of the officer. They told me not to cry and let me go after making me wait for 5 minutes.

Another couple of times I have told the officers, that I am a government officer on duty and due to the nature of my service (emergency), I need to reach in time. I have a doctor sticker in my windshield. Have been let go in almost all such situations

Other times when I have been caught, I simply tell them I do not have the time to stop. Neither can I pay the fine in cash. Nor have the physical documents. So, please issue a challan online.
Luckily have never received a challan in such scenarios

Please note these violations are of minor nature. And nothing serious like speed violations. Have shared them for some humor

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Apart from 200 Rs fine paid for parking scooter in a No Parking Zone around a bank, I was fined in a car for speeding in highway and jumping a signal.

In 2022, I was traveling from Bharuch to Mumbai through NH48, a breeze drive. After entering Ghodbunder road, first signal came once entering Thane and I jumped red, tailing other cars. (Now I knew, this is some form of speed blindness or I was not aware of external environment). Everyone were promptly stopped by the cops few meters away. (I always wondered about smartness of cops in finding the sweet spot for them to stay undercover yet respond timely). He was accommodate enough to settle for 1K out of system very quickly. It was like a F1 pit stop. However, he revealed that there is already a speeding challan and showed the photo in his handheld device, though I never got any intimation.

During that year, few cops in city offered to collect the challan money during usual checks but I always ducked. During my 2023 drive to Aurangabad, I was pulled by a random cop in a deserted part of Pune-Nashik road and upon finding nothing to strike, offered to collect the old challan money.

Finally decided to check the fact online myself. Upon checking, found that my old mobile number is attached to my RC data portal and hence the intimation might be sent to that no. It was for doing 86 in a 80 highway near Chinchoti during a 2020 drive. You know, Covid era, empty roads. However I did find the photo kinda of cute, probably due to the wide angle lens. First changed the mobile number and then paid the fine of 1K.

I'm no saint, just lucky enough to be fined only twice. Also oddly, being a MH car, never fined or bribed in GJ, KA, KL, TN, AP though driven extensively and I know the opposite isn't true.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Don't have a proof right now but -

I was challaned for Rs 500 at SB Road, Pune just opposite to JW Marriott for halting my car a little above Zebra crossing.
Rest the whole lot of two wheeler traffic was riding without helmets, stopped after crossing the zebras and few of them even flunked the signal. Not sure if they were challaned or not :(

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

My first speeding fine was in Milan, Italy, where I was depending too much on the car's map to tell me the speed limits. I was driving at night and at one stretch the car's system was showing a speed limit of 50, however, as there was road work happening, it was reduced to 30. I drove past at the same speed as even though there were barricades, there was no traffic and no workers at site. I saw a flash, and my brother noticed it too, but we both realized too late.

The rental company had deducted the fine from my deposit, and I was surprised when they sent the fine and the receipt all the way to my address in India. This first fine came after approximately 14 years of driving and was quite an irritant for me.

The second fine was in New Delhi, 4 years later, when I was leaving from Delhi towards Jaiselmer at 4 AM, and got caught speeding some 5-6kmph above the speed limt in a 50kmph zone IIRC.

While both have been relatively low speed incidents, I learned not to depend too much on tech after the first incident and the second taught me to have better awareness while driving before dusk.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

I have a weird thing, anytime I travel out of Mumbai, for one reason or another, I always end up being fined at least once. Like in my last trip, where on my journey from Indore to Mathura, around 100-150 km from Indore, I was stopped by a police speed camera car that was parked near a sign indicating a 100 km/h speed limit. I was confident that my speed was only around 80-85 km/h. Upon checking with the officer, I was told that before this sign, the speed limit was 80 km/h, and only after crossing the sign does it increase to 100 km/h. When they checked my speed in their system, it showed that I was traveling at 83 km/h. This seemed more or less like a very deliberate scam. I paid ₹1000, got a receipt, and went on my way. Some people paid ₹500 in cash and were let go.

Another issue I frequently encounter is in Gujarat, where the police check cars for alcohol. Even if they don’t find any, the policemen always try to find ways to make money. Once, they asked me for a PUC certificate and were adamant that a PUC is required for EVs as well. If they can’t find any reason to extort money, and if you have any sweets (mithai) with you in the car, they do not hesitate to take them. Mithai has been taken by policemen from me multiple times.

Most of my fines are for Over-speeding, PUC & Parking.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Got a couple of tickets in the last one year:

Sectional overspeeding in the Mys Blr Expressway. I was on cruise throughout and sped up to overtake a bunch of trucks and cars. Bad mistake as its 1000 as a fine.
Be very careful as this can be expensive by mistake.

Stopping on a zebra crossing - The light turned from yellow to red. Fine of 1000
Crossing the road on a blinking yellow or disfunctional light at midnight - Fine of 500

The fun one was parking in a road where suddenly a no parking board is placed. Mind you it doesnt make sense. Car tire was locked, but luckily the officer was nearby. Fine of 200 was charged.

Based on these fines i realised, its just your words against the cops and with minimal proof being offered it is very difficult to contest these fines.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Erstwhile NH3.

1. The Nasik Bridge while going towards Indore from Mumbai, there will always be an interceptor. Open roads, no traffic, the the speed limit is 50kmph.

So either you risk of being rear-ended, or a speeding ticket.

2. Indore - Mumbai, just before Dhule.
Going up the bridge, the speed limit is 100kmph
And going down the bridge, its 30kmph

No crossing, no village, no traffic, and exactly at this place, the interceptor is positioned.

The real businessman does not grab an opportunity, the Sureshot create 1.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

I had been driving for more than 4+ decades with almost a clean accident free record. The only issue now is that I have to renew my driving license every 5 years with a medical fitness certificate.

Coming to violations, I can think of the following incidents:

1. I park my car at Princeton railway station every Monday morning near my home to catch a flight at Newark airport. On one of the Monday mornings during winter snow fall, my parking ticket ( I used to insert quarters at the parking vending machine and keep the ticket visible on the windscreen from inside). For some reason it was not visible to the police due to heavy snowfall and he issued a ticket and attached to the windshield wiper blade. This happened 25 years back and asked my friends on what I need to do. They asked me to pay up the fine of 50 USD and it is not worth the hassle to contest to the judge by showing the parking ticket which I purchased.

2. I had a TN registered Scorpio in Bangalore for a while and was never caught by police until one day I was stopped. I mentally got prepared to tell him that I just came from Chennai few days back and intend to take the car back but it looks like the cop recognised my glaringly visible Black Scorpio was a common sight in the Whitefield area near my villa and he had been seeing the car for some time. He issued Rs 1000 ticket with an official receipt and I paid.

3. One incident I want to narrate here even though it never occurred to me personally but told to me my grand father when he was alive. My grand father who worked in top posts with AP Government and was special secretary to Chief Minister NTR in 80s. It seems that my grand father along with another top ranking IPS officer were travelling in a personal car for a private function when their car was stopped by the Police and as usual the Police was expecting some bribe as he could not recognise the VIPs in the car in civil dress. The senior IPS officer in civil dress got down from the car and kicked the police with his boot and immediately he was saluted with “Sir”. No further words were exchanged and they left the place. It seems there is an internal code that is taught in the Police academy that if anybody dares to such an act, he is a top Cop and it is better to salute.

Re: List the traffic violations that you have been fined for

Interesting thread but I am not sure why isnt anyone opening talking about being caught my policemen when one was busy kissing their gfs in cars.I have had all types of challans discussed by members in this thread, but this was unexpected. The policemen threatened that he will call the girls parents if I don't pay him. He showed some rule book where the challan was for 2k+a visit to court. Though we were both adults but I didn't think much and paid him all I had, it was barely Rs 400, I am talking 15 years past. That was my most weird challan.
