Re: What is your daily office commute like?

It's less than 30 minutes for me, one way and is about 4 kms away from my home. The traffic is quite sparse as this part of our city is not densely populated, that makes navigation quite a breeze.

With the number of cars at 3 (excluding the vintage), each one begs to be driven regularly. I am not able to do justice to the trio here. The result is that their odo readings are like cars, just two years old or so. And when these go to the garage, the owner who is my friend says, "you hardly drive." Occassional outings to my city's vicinity are OK for me. I have had more than enough of long drives, for about two plus decades to various parts of the country, but not with the present trio, who are late comers.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

Voted for <30 Mins.

Current Scenario : After relocating to Garbage oops Garden City, Bangalore, my residence is a shade over 7 kms from my office. Owing to the "New Year Resolution" of not buying a car, I commute using the "not-so-friendly" 3 wheeler / Auto Rickshaw.

The commute in the morning is about 15 - 20 mins, depending on when I leave. The return is about 20 - 25 mins (depending on when I leave).

Net Result : Peace of mind as I'm not driving amidst Zero IQ motorists!

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

My commutes are dependent on whether I go to office or my client's sites which are present throughout the city and also at the cardinal entry points to the city (Bommasandra, Yelahanka, hoodi circle, neelamangala, kanakpura road, kengeri)

Commutes to office are relatively short, 10kms round trip, averaging about 45 minutes overall. The shortest i have done the round trip is 30 minutes and the longest is about 2 hours(mostly due to rain and its attendant flooding).

When visiting client sites on the edges of the city, which usually happens atleast once a week, i end up taking 2-3 hours round trip from home. With 1/3 of the time spent going and 2/3 returning.

The absolute worst commute i had done, for a whole week, was going from Lal bagh to Airport and then to Bommasandra and then to lal bagh, for a complex breakdown in a product neccessiating multiple shipments to be collected and dropped at airport. The whole trip took 6+ hours to complete on a good day. Made me realise the value of a good AT in Bangalore's horrendous traffic.

To utilize the time spent commuting, I usually end up listening to some light audio books or podcasts on history and archeology so that I don't have to be attentive to what is being spoken or read aloud.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

A very interesting topic, to which I would like to share my 'couple of paisas'

Reside at Dwarka (New Delhi)
Work place at Gurgaon
One way distance 40 kms

Office start time 10 AM
Usual office finish time 7 PM (may stretch to 8.30 PM twice or three times a month)
Last day of the month : office finish time - depends on month end closing, could be anytime from 9 PM to 11 PM

Having worked in the Middle East for over a decade, somehow I am not too comfortable driving in the unruly traffic. For my assurance, I have got a dashcam installed.

I leave home at 7.30 AM and reach office by 8.40 AM maximum. Its a stress free pleasure drive which make me appreciate the smoothness and silence of my car. The only concern being, the commuters at that time (specially in Dwarka) are vehicles used to ferry school kids. Vehicles of all shapes, sizes, number of tyres ranging from 2 to 6 (including 3 tyres). All these users seem to be in a tearing hurry with absolutely no respect to the traffic lights. I prefer the traffic light being 'red' as I have to stop. With more preference being if I am the 2nd car onwards (as I fear if I am the first, I would be rear ended, or some 'thorough gentleman' shall be honking (as if cursing me as to why have I stopped). The worst being if the signal is 'green', the fear of some 'gentleman' jumping his 'red' sign comes in front of me, the very thought makes me judder in fear. Once I cross Dwarka it is a smooth drive till the Mahipalpur underpass right 'U turn' till 8 AM. After 8 AM, hell breaks loose here. With the flow towards Gurgaon multiplying by leaps and bounds. So the aim is to cross this obstacle by or before 8 AM. Subsequently the drive is smooth.

The return drive (no, lets call it journey) is a totally different ball game all together. In case I leave office at 7 PM. the point where the Golf Course Road (Raghavendra Marg) joins the Delhi Jaipur highway (I take a right here) is in complete ciaos. Vehicles coming from the Jaipur to Delhi direction, major of them need to take a right (this place has an extremely bad road design), just cut across right, where as people like me who need to proceed towards Delhi need to go straight. Adding to the ciaos about 200 meters ahead, the road narrows down as the extremely right lane is blocked due to some construction. Somehow come out of this mess, then the notorious Haryana Delhi border jam, which continuous all the way past the Umrao Resort. Turn left towards Dwarka. The junction where one has to take a left towards Samalkha is another mess as it is devoid of traffic lights, hence manned by civil police - which no one respecting their direction instructions. Another mess at the next junction. Carrying on further all is well till the right turn on the Golf Course road. Here again the nightmare starts with no one obeying traffic signals, the only solace being there is a speed limit of 50 kmph.

Hence the return journey could take 1.5 hours (very good) to 2 hours 45 mins - for which one has to be mentally prepared!!

Saturdays, the return journey is a pleasure. The worst being Monday morning and Friday evening.

Am sure, fellow Bhpians traversing on this route would be in agreement with me.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

Hello everyone!
Thanks to the moderators for approving the request.

This is my first post, Glad to be a part of the community. Looking forward to learn and share my experiences here.
I stay in PCMC, very much on the old Mumbai-Pune highway.

My commute-
Morning: About 10 Mins from Company provided Bus service.
Evening: About 20 Mins as there is no free left on my way back to home.

I just don't like to take my car out for a 5 min drive, as bus literally drops me at my society gate.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

Should we get paid for wasting our time in traffic?

I am not sure whether this is the appropriate subject, but I feel quite angry at how much time we waste in traffic on our way to work and back home. I believe this is a very complex and often debated topic.

From a legal perspective, an employee's mode of transportation to and fro from work is a personal preference, which is often regarded as a personal expense rather than part of the workday.

However, from an ethical point of view, employees should be compensated for commute time because it is time spent in service to the company and prevents the employee from using this time for his personal or any other recreational activities.

I believe it will boost staff productivity and morale by compensating for commute time. It will demonstrate the employer's appreciation for the time and effort required to come to work.

Overall, I believe there are reasonable arguments on both sides of this issue.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

My travel distance is around 55 Kms daily from Thane to Turbhe

I have 3 routes to travel:

Towards Office:

Thane - Belapur road: 45 mins to 1 hour, leaving at 8 am. Lot of commuter traffic and a few signals
Thane - Mumbra bypass via Shilphata: 50 mins, mostly use this route as its scenic in the Mumbra ghats with a few corners thrown in, also low commuter traffic and Zero Signals. To be avoided in case there is heavy truck traffic
Thane - Airoli - Turbhe: 50 mins, use this only if the other 2 routes show jams, also this has 2 tolls enroute (Mulund+Airoli) Rs.90 one way, not at all worth it.

Towards Home:

Since my timings for leaving work are not fixed and generally post 7 pm, return is a minimum of 1 hour.

Thane - Belapur road: 1 hour minimum, lot of slow moving traffic
Thane - Mumbra bypass via Shilphata: 1 hour plus, but preferred route as I get to bypass the Majiwada junction flyover which is a massive mess these days.

Also, always check Google maps before leaving.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

My daily commute is 34kms

Onwards - 16kms, Return 18kms

Before Chennai Metro Phase 2 work in OMR, onward was 30 minutes and return was 35 minutes, but now, onward is easily 1 hour and return is 55 minutes depending on time I start.

Our company mandates 4 days work from office, so no way to skip the traffic and work from home :(

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

My daily travel is 100 kms with six day travel on alternate weeks.

I spend minimum 4 hours daily and sometimes it goes as high as 6-7 hours.

Unfortunately I have a car in which I can’t upgrade the music system so I don’t enjoy music during the journey. I have been utilising this time to listen to podcasts on Amazon Music or learn stock markets on YouTube music.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

My daily commute is from Wakad to Hinjewadi Phase 1 and is about 5KM. In car it used to take 15-20 mins due to traffic and also I didn't like taking car for such a short route.
So I bought a pre-owned TVS Apache RTR 200 RV. Big perks of having a two wheeler, it now only takes maximum 10 minutes from office to home or vice-versa.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

This is the hardest part of the day, except for when I'm on the wheel jamming to my playlist😅
I live close to Cunningham Road, and have to travel all the way to Whitefield, 5 days a week. On most days I am forced to take the Metro(which I don't mind), considering the rush hour traffic. But on Friday, I always drive myself to the office.
Coming to the commute times,
Metro: 1Hr and 15Mins considering the last mile commute which I usually cover by walk near my office.
Car/bike: 45 mins today morning (which is one of the best times I have recorded). Mornings are better and I reach office by 1Hr and 30mins. Usually takes me close to 2 hours by Bike and maybe more by Car in the evenings on my way back home.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

I voted 1 to 2 hours.

1. My commute in Bangalore until 2023 for 10 kms from my villa near ITPL to Ecoworld on ORR is hardly 10 kms and it takes 2 hours in peak traffic. My German colleagues used to make fun of the traffic mess and I used to feel bad about it. There is nothing one can do when Bangalore changed from a garden city to Silicon Valley of India. May be traffic is an essential evil as part of the unprecedented growth of the city.

2. My commute when I was on site abroad until 2023 which is 50% of all working days in a year is minimal. I always take hotel near client site even if I am having a rental car.

3. The present commute is ZERO because I am retired and live on the beach road with few feet away from the Bay of Bengal and Pacific Ocean ( Visakhapatnam and San Diego ) which is the place one can find me if I am not at home. My wife makes fun of me that I go to beach punctually every day as if I am going to office.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

Home - Near Kundalahalli Gate
Office - EcoSpace Bellandur
Frequency - Twice a week

Home to Office
- 6.5 kms
- Around 25 mins (I generally start early)

Office to Home
- 10 kms (thanks to two U-turns)
- Around 50 mins

Morning traffic is still bearable, but the chaos in the evening under the Marathahalli flyover all the way to the Karthik Nagar U-turn triggers me every time I drive that stretch. Its appalling how the Bangalore Traffic Police has repeatedly failed to control the Tours & Travel buses parked right on the ORR.

Haha, interesting take on the subject. I'd say, in a way many organizations are already paying for people coming to office after pandemic - by not cutting on the existing salary . No?

Talking of personal time vs company time, we are in India sir where there are hardly any protections for middle class - whether as employee or consumer or anything else.

Re: What is your daily office commute like?

Morning
Starts from a 40kmph residential road, stop signs and shoulder checks for merging and yield for U turns. Then a few "silent" signals later you hit the 60/80 roads, slow down for speed cams (wink) and then get onto 80/100 stretch for a bit, get in the groove and then blast onto 100/120 roads, indicators and head checks. 20~ kms in under 15 mins and into a freezone and settle down in the comfort of a Air Con above your head.

Evening - Jaiho! Same thing but surrounded by 5x the cars and crawling at 15-20kmph, hehe! 30 mins easily.
