Bandra-Worli Sea Link toll rates to go up from April 1; one-way trip to cost Rs 100

A drive across Mumbai's iconic Rajiv Gandhi Bandra Worli Sea Link will cost more from April 1. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced an 18% hike in toll rates.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link toll rates to go up from April 1; one-way trip to cost Rs 100-bandraworlisealink.jpg

A one-way journey across the bridge will cost Rs 100 for cars and jeeps. Minibuses, tempos and LCVs will be charged a fee of Rs 160, while 2-axle trucks and buses will have to pay Rs 210 to use the bridge.

Frequent travellers will also have to shell out more as return journey passes and daily passes are set to be priced at 1.5 times and 2.5 times their respective one-way toll charges. Monthly passes will cost 50 times their respective one-way rates.

Currently, the toll charge for cars and jeeps is Rs 85, while LCVs are charged a fee of Rs 130. Trucks and buses have to pay Rs 175.

The revised toll rates will be applicable until March 31, 2027.

On a slightly related aspect, and I haven’t researched this specifically but just at a basic commercial standpoint, I can’t understand why the Bandra Worli Sealink needed to be developed on a toll basis but the clearly expensively developed coastal road can operate on a toll free basis. Personally as a tax payer who’s entirely a personal vehicle user it is convenient but still a question that is bound to be asked.

This cost rise basically takes that into account. Also once the Coastal Road is completely finished, toll will start, right now only few sections so there is no charge, so better enjoy till its free.

At the time Sealink was constructed, major road projects were undertaken on BOT basis by private concessionaires. After 2010-15, such contracts have not been very favourable to the private party and soon there were no bidders for BOT contracts.

So, Government started making roads themselves and then monetise the roads once traffic stabilises, which is more lucrative for private parties. Govt gets lump sum payments from private party and private party gets the right to collect toll for certain years.

This appears to be the reason for difference between tolling on sealink and coastal road.

In 5 years time from now once all major road works in Mumbai have concluded, driving daily on these roads within city limits is going to become one expensive affair. I do understand that cost of development and maintenance has to be covered fair enough, however I also hope that higher toll rates would at least sufficiently motivate the govt to start strictly implementing laws that they themselves had made some time ago.

This was bound to happen sooner or later. Honestly at this point people have become so used to commuting with the sealink that even with these increased exorbitant rates people would rather pay than go via the Dadar route.

What is more important to see/understand is the fact that the Sealink is soon to be connected with the Coastal Road, the coastal road has been kept free for now (political reasons, partial opening) etc. Once the coastal road is opened in a full-fledged manner to the public with all parts of the road complete it is quite possible that there may an another additional toll.

In that case, travelling from other parts of the town into SoBo is going to be one pocket hole burning experience.

Bandra worli sea link is a boon to many
Initially when it was made it was toll free for a considerable amount of time
Rs 85 is still less than coastal road toll

Coastal roads toll is way too high,
Although the distance it covers is more.
To add to it people are soo triggered cause people are fed up paying exorbitant taxes.
The inflation is at all time high and the income hasn't increased much, unemployment is at all time high since 1950's
It's evident people will be angry at yet another tax they have to pay
specially when the govt is already taxing us directly or indirectly via GST, Road Tax , toll tax, income tax, property tax, you name it
