Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

Bangalore has overtaken Delhi to become the Indian city with the highest number of private cars.

Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars-_92729063_newairportroadnearhebbal.jpg

According to the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2023, Bangalore had a total of 23.1 lakh private cars as of March 31, 2023. In comparison, the national capital had 79.5 lakh vehicles, out of which, 20.7 lakh were private cars.

As per the data, Delhi witnessed 1.2 crore vehicle registrations, of which 33.8 lakh were private cars. However, the transport department has also been steadily de-registering overaged vehicles in the national capital in compliance with the Supreme Court ban on petrol and diesel vehicles older than 15 and 10 years, respectively.

According to reports, 55 lakh cars were de-registered in 2021-22 and 2022-23 alone, while 1.4 lakh vehicles were scrapped and over 6.2 lakh vehicles received no-objection certificates to be re-registered in other states.

Bangalore was placed second on the list of the world’s most congested cities in 2022, with London taking the top spot.

As per a report compiled by TomTom, commuters spent an average of 29 minutes and 10 seconds to cover 10 km at an average speed of 18 km/h through Bangalore’s city centre. In 2022, commuters dedicated 260 hours to driving, out of which, 134 hours were due to congestion.

Not surprised as

1. Delhi no longer has land to grow. It's other cities like Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad that are growing. NCR as a whole will be much larger than anywhere else.

2. De-registration of the older vehicles; nowhere else are older vehicles as new as 2013/14 being deregistered.

3. A very ever-expanding Metro. Many folks have made peace and enjoy the comfort of using public transport. I know a couple of businessmen who commute to the old Delhi area (Ajmeri gate, etc) by Metro in routine, and they can afford any number of cars.

Re: Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

I lived in Bangalore ten years ago and even then the traffic situation was unruly and cumbersome to say the least. I can only imagine what the state is today with, in general more vehicles in road, coupled with our obsession with SUVs.

I can understand the need for a decent ground clearance on account of our poor road infrastructure but cannot fathom why we want bigger wider vehicles when our roads are just not built for these. I suspect its down to us Indians finally having the wherewithal and access to buy better things after years and years of mediocre crap; and so all the practical implications have taken a back seat.

I just hope we're smarter about this otherwise over the next decade and 5m more SUVs later, things are going to get really bad really quickly.

I am sure these numbers dont take into account the Out-Of-KA vehicles operating in Bangalore.
These would themselves be in many thousands.

Re: Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

Also, Delhi will have plenty of cars registered in the neighbouring states. I think Delhi may still beat Bengaluru on the parameter of number of vehicles on the road, if all these vehicles are also accounted for.

In the end, the number of vehicles on the road seems to be a more umportant parameter than the number of registrations.

Misleading thread title. It's not #cars, but rather #cars/kilometer. Mods, please change the title of the thread.

And this is primarily because Blore has woefully low kms of road length (and surface area and quality). The "kms" being a quantity in the denominator, the fraction #cars/kms is working out high for Blore (compared to Delhi).

Else if you compare absolute #cars in Delhi NCR, it far exceeds #cars in Blore. And this is clearly visible on the streets too.

It says count itself is higher irrespective of road length. Less road length makes it an order of magnitude even worse. Even though Deccan Herald article mentions cars/km, it also gives the count as higher.

Re: Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

I live in Bangalore and I have a different take on this.

Poor public transportation infrastructure is the reason for innumerable cars on Bangalore roads. I can either choose to stay put in my home or get a ride for myself. Like most people with families, I need a 4-wheeler to transport everyone else. However, for my own mental peace I prefer commuting to my office on my 2-wheeler.

Most folks who know about Bangalore metro plans have asked the same question - why did we plan route xx in phase 1 which is not even in the top 10 most congested routes? And have not planned route yy even in phase 3 (ETA: 2035) that is on the top 3 most congested routes? Our metropolitan planner BBMP operates at a different level of corruption. They complain about outsiders while happily building wealth using their tax money.

Instead of blaming people for their choices, we need to look at public infrastructure in the equation. Please understand that none of us Bengalurians like the current status of traffic and avoid taking cars on the road as much as we can.

Re: Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

If there was decent public transport and at least easy availability of cabs, I would have never bought a car in Bangalore. It just sits there waiting for some weekend "gedi". My usage is like 1500 km in 4-5 months. I see most cars in my apartment parked all week like this. Very few are regularly taken out

Isn't Ola/Uber system good in Bangalore? Autos/cabs?

Mumbai has bad Ola/Uber system while Delhi NCR is great in this too.

And what's 'gedi'?

Very very high rate of cancellations. I had to catch a bus once at 8pm 3-4km away from my house. I started booking auto/cab at 6pm, tried to catch on road and didn't get anything till like 7:50pm. Then got an auto which charged 300rs I think and I reached at 8:15pm, thankfully the bus was stuck in same traffic and got late

"Gedi" is a Punjabi term I think, it just means joyride

I personally think that using public transport for commute and cars for weekend/social purposes is a good thing. Case in point:

I had a Celerio and was commuting in it, spending ~12-13K/month on fuel + toll + parking (no EMI. Loan was repaid). Not to mention the rapid deterioration of my car, dents all around and drivers fatigue built up over the week. I would invariably take Auto or Cab on weekends.

I ran some numbers and figured that with a bit of down-payment (mostly resale value of my Celerio + little bit of own funds) and an EMI of 15K/month, I could buy a brand new Car for 16-17L, provided I used it only on weekends and took the train to work. So that's exactly what I did.

I am now a proud owner of the sexy new Verna (CVT), which I take out on weekends (mostly Sunday brunch drives or outstation drives with family), while I commute with metro+train+bus. Good for my health, good for my pocket, good for the environment and good for my car. I will for sure get a higher resale value when I sell it in 5-6 years which will help me buy a higher variant of my next car.

If a strong public transport develops, it might actually increase car sales (in value if not volume) while keeping roads manageable.

Re: Bangalore pips Delhi to become the city with highest number of cars

In population, Bangalore is far behind Mumbai and Delhi. And yet having highest no. of vehicles is indicative of traffic congestion problem.
Some causes that I can think of
Mumbai has an excellent local train system in which average 50 lakhs travel everyday.
Delhi metro covers the city extensively.
Kolkata metro also covers all important routes in city. Plus historically majority of Kolkata residents travel in buses, metro than driving cars.
From what I have seen, Hyderabad road infrastructure is good.
Greater Mumbai and NCR also has much more area for residents.

Bangalore and to some extent Pune have IT companies concentrated on a few areas only. And as a result huge vehicle movement occurs there causing snarling traffic.

So even though other metros have huge traffic, situation is not that extreme as Bangalore
