On second thoughts and on verifying, it appears that it is 5171 and not 5191.
TN59BK5191 is an Acvita whereas the 5171 is a bullet registered to a Vigneswaran J, at Madurai (North) RTO.

I think the logic of the lettering is something similar to this picture.

Saw a 2017 Mercedes E Class with the number KA05 AG 5009 white board. I thought the A'X' series is for commercial vehicles whereas M'X' is for private vehicles. What gives ???

Anything in Karnataka that starts with an A is registered as a cab or a commercial vehicle. This particular E Class wouldn't have paid Life time Road Tax but will be on a yearly or quarterly road tax. He definitely should be using the yellow board.

All private registrations start with M and now N in Indranagar RTO as it's the only RTO that has finished the M series and moved to N.

Edit : did a VAHAN Sms search and this is what I got.

AFAIK, DN is the code for the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. So this is more likely a smart alec who saved a few 100k INR in tax for the luxury barge by registering it in a UT rather than a state with high road tax. I may be wrong too, as the owner could be a resident of DN and on a visit.

Black with white font for private and white with black font for commercial IIRC. When our old Esteem and Zen had their number plates changed, it looked so weird for so long

Black with white font had its own charm. Looked great on white cars with the sudden sudden colour contrast.

I was abroad when the changeover happened, and wasn't aware of it. I came back home for a wedding well after all cars had probably changed over to new plates. Came out of the airport, saw my family car and asked my mom & grandfather in complete disbelief "You've changed the car to a taxi?!?!?!"

EDIT: Some ASEAN countries still use black plates with white lettering

Even I remember how sad and angry i was when changing over from black to white. I hated the fact that visually, white looked really bad. But because it was a step towards a common looking plate design across many countries, I felt it was ok.
I had a sticker-ed number plate. I just took a can of white paint and painted the entire plate. Then after it dried, I carefully removed the sticker and I was good to go

2001 is when it happened if I remember right. The roadside paint shops got good business. For a while we had white, black and yellow back grounds running till everyone changed over.

Singapore and Malaysia still use black plates with white fonts. Singapore surprisingly does not use any type of High Security plates but alt least all the plates are uniform.

This bloke loves his mother so much that he has mentioned her on the number plate. The advocates primary liability. Legibility of the registration number comes secondary.


Faded jean was in vogue at a point in time, but a faded number plate ? Just could not make out the number.
