Human traffic jam at Yeshwanthpur Junction Railway Station

Human traffic jam at Yeshwanthpur Jn.

This post is about my experiences on a recent trip to and fro Yeshwanthpur Junction.

I'd gone there to board a train to Solapur. Although I had over 20 minutes in hand, my sight of the crowd on the foot over bridge (FOB) gave me a shock.

There was a human jam on the FOB from platform #6 (the main entry) towards platform #4, apparently caused by a large number of passengers who'd arrived by a train at platform #4. This resulted in some tense moments for passengers headed towards the two trains departing platforms 2 and 3. I took the ramp at the southern end (Bengaluru end) of platform #6, and went up, only to find the overhead section jammed. Two folks were making their way through the mess and I just followed suit to move out of the mass of humans. As soon as I crossed the area over platform #4, all was well.

Key takeaways:

1. Not sure, but entering through the other side (platform #1) or the non-metro side makes better sense else one has to figure out if there is a walkway over the tracks at either end to avoid such unforeseen sights. This can be a downer for those who arrive at the station with just five minutes to spare.

2. The steps to the FOB from platform #1 are much much wider than the one on #6.

I must have passed through this station umpteen times over the last 35+ years but never got off. The station is rather impressive, and most importantly, there is zero congestion around the road just outside the station. Hotel Vishwa, around the road corner right opposite the station is a decent pure veg restaurant. The sambar is a tad sweet but the rest of the south Indian fare that I sampled was good. However, one can't see the restaurant from the station. Dedicated lanes for drop off by auto, car, and for the Babu cars were all there.

Wow, I use YPR (and KSR) station a lot and have never seen that happen. Guessing this was on the eve of the long-weekend, Jan 25th evening?

Thumb-rule for entering/exiting Namma Bengaluru using any mode of transport (road, rail, air) on any long weekend, budget at least an hour extra to enter, leave.

But great thing about both of Bangalore's main railway stations now is direct Metro access! The Purple line takes you right to Platform 10 of KSR (one Metro station after Majestic) with direct footbridge access between the Metro station and Railway station. The Green Line connects Yeshwantpur Railway station. No foot over-bridge direct access yet there, but apparently they are constructing one.

I have had such experiences mostly in Bombay and a few times at other major station/cities; usually waiting out a few mins gets the situation sorted (unfortunately not true for Mumbai locals though).

+1

For rail, another thumb-rule that we follow for KSR and YPR is to use the metro as much as possible. Never have to worry about delays via that option. We take the car/cab to drop/pick-up only for early morning or late night trains.

Or when feasible, use secondary stations like Cantonment and Krishnarajapuram - these are generally (relatively) emptier and although short on stoppage time, they offer a good alternative to the main stations with a quick entry & exit to/from the station.

Might be because of a long weekend or festive weekend.
Although, it's been a long time since I travelled by train.

There is a footpath over the tracks on the Tumkur end of the station which are used by trolleys and can be used by passengers as well. One needs to be careful while crossing.
It is also a long way around if you want to exit the station or enter a platform after entering the station. But one can escape a potential stampede on the FoB in a situation like this.

That would have given many, a shock if they were to have been stuck in there and waiting to board a train. Trains would not normally wait for passengers to get in.

Was there last evening, there was a crowd getting across from Pf 6 to the other platforms. Very lucky for us, we had arrived at least 45 min before departure, and had enough time for the group that included seniors and lots of luggage, to reach the coach.

Solapur station has changed big time recently. Have been going there since almost 40 years now, though the trips have reduced these days / use another station down the line.

Wow!! I have never seen so much of crowd in any Bengaluru station as yet!! I take the day train and that could be the reason. Whenever I had to take the night train to Hyderabad, I board at Yelahanka which is never so crowded. Guess one needs to plan and move a couple of hours early to avoid such hassles!
