Re: Ideas to keep idiots from blocking my gates?

If your gates swing out wards then I suggest keep them open towards the road and have a boombarrier with skirt installed inside, it should cost you 1.5 L. The gates can be closed late night by the guard. Hope this helps.

This is not the right solution and application. What you are referring to are bollards which have a different purpose. They are used to stop vehicles which force enter. I say this because we manufacture them. Added to this, they need several other components like 3 phase electricals, hydraulic pumps and reservoirs and huge control panels, a depth of 1.8 Mtrs beneath FFL. Trust me it’s a 1 Cr + investment for set of 4 Bollards and not meant for residential societies. They won’t have the real estate and there are many BMC services running underground. The only society we sold is Indiabulls BLU who could afford .

Re: Ideas to keep idiots from blocking my gates?

So you may already know this but in Delhi NCR, people deflate tyres of those who block. Its a bit of an extreme solution, but a large sign post that says no parking. Tyres will be deflated at once, and you are guaranteed to not see any more cars there.

Re: Ideas to keep idiots from blocking my gates?

Yes no doubt and basic common sense that we shouldn’t be blocking gates to park our vehicles. I saw a mention of putting traffic cones on what seems like a footpath. Most important thing to remember is, putting traffic cones on the footpath/reserving space on the road in front of your house wall is not on. First come first serve is the standard rule for all public property. It’s for the pedestrians and not private property. I had a homeowner in Jayanagar, Bengaluru ask me to stay away from his BMW X3 parked on the footpath, of all places. I immediately shot back asking him to park inside his house if he wanted to. Caused an argument but stood my ground. Not that I was damaging it, but I have all the right to stand on the footpath. For good measure, took a photo and tagged the responsible authorities on twitter. Seemed like the traffic police did their job the next time I passed by, no X3 there.
Heard paid parking will be operational soon in Bengaluru. ( I doubt the competence of the BBMP in enforcing it), but support it wholeheartedly. Will weed out the menace of double Parkers and the reservation likes.

Re: Ideas to keep idiots from blocking my gates?

In Kochi I've seen people call traffic police and they come and stick challans on the car. Apart from having a security guard 24*7 at the gate, I can't think of anything else that might solve this issue permanently.

I wouldn't suggest defacing public roads as a remedy because you'll invite wrath of public people eventually and the city corporation might demolish your wall claiming illegal encroachment.

I have a cost effective solution for you. Paint the wall facing your gate with the number "13". See how many people will avoid parking there. You may also add other numbers that put a scare in people like "666" just to be safe.

What can I do about this? This person doesn't have a dedicated parking space and occupies the already narrow road 24/7, rarely moving their car—maybe once every two weeks. This makes it impossible for me to use the road with my car.

This is a shared road by the way, I took this picture from first floor of my house

Looks like the car can be parked further towards the compound by at-least 1 feet if the drain was covered with concrete slabs or drain stones. You can maybe ask them to do just that, although it might be an expensive affair for them to cover the drainage with slabs but that seems like the only option apart from parking the vehicle elsewhere.

The road is too narrow for any kind of adjustments!

People nowadays have very little to nothing in their head, only selfishness and arrogance is filled in it. That too when they own a car, the entire road becomes their family's.

Remember the Tamil movie parking ! Try speaking sense in to the person and solve it amicably. Don't involve in any other methods, you will lose your peace in the process. Your time is not worth fighting with selfish & mindless people !

According to rules, one cannot park their vehicles in a manner that another vehicle cannot pass. This is termed as obstruction of passage, and you can complain to the traffic police station under whose jurisdiction your home falls under. If they own the car, they need to arrange for its parking without obstructing the passage of other vehicles as well.

Have you spoken to the person? Is it impossible to take out your car or is it just inconvenient?

I have an i20 and because of its width which is wider than a C segment sedan, it is impossible for me to use this route to enter my house. It’s highly annoying as well.

As someone who has been dealing with this issue for over 15 years, there is no permanent solution. You live with it, adjust and manage. I live in a crowded neighborhood with narrow inside roads. Ours is the only house that has enough parking inside the house for the number of vehicles we own. Every other house on our street either doesn't have parking inside, or has an additional vehicle that they park on the street.

And where do they park? Usually on the pavement outside our house "anyway you are not using it, no?", and more than a few times, blocking our gates! "But you have another gate to enter, no?" I've also had to listen to people honking and yelling at me because they automatically assume that the car blocking their car outside my house...has to be mine!

You have to deal with it each time. These people are your neighbors. Speak with them each time and ask them to move the vehicle. I now can identify all the vehicles and have all the phone numbers, so I just call and they usually come pronto and remove the vehicle when needed. Most irritating is when their guests come and there is a strange vehicle parked in an inconvenient location. Then I need to visit each house and ask. "Oh that's ours, I'll come after I finish eating, we're having dinner now, no" (!!!)

Initially, I used to get all bothered and fight. No point. This way the issue is not solved, but alleviated and my life is less stressed. There is not going to be any permanent solution, people will buy cars and they won't plan for parking. That's just the way things are.
