Toll payment: Bye Bye Toll Plazas, Enter Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) for direct debit

https://www.hindustantimes.com/car-b...349599660.html

The union ministry of road transport and highways' plan is remove all the toll plazas on the national highways and rely on Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras.

The government is mulling to remove toll plazas and replace them with cameras will read number plates. The union ministry of road transport and highways' plan is remove all the toll plazas on the national highways and rely on Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras, union minister Nitin Gadkari told The Indian Express in an interview.

Gadkari said that the government made a rule in 2019 that all the cars will have company-fitted number plates. “Now, the plan is to remove toll plazas and put cameras, which will read these number plates and toll will be deducted from the account directly,” he told the website.

This is a welcome step and is followed in most of the developed countries. Would definitely save time for the travelers.

I never understood why this technology was not implemented in place of fasttag in the first place as it was already being used successfully by many other countries.

Well better late than never.

Hopefully the technology is strong enough to be able to reject forged/ fake number plates (which miscreants are quite capable of).

Would somebody be able to talk about the technology being used?

In Bangalore, miscreants just copy another car's number plate and paste it on to theirs. And there is no way to catch them unless they get stopped for routine checking, which the cops have stopped now (unless there is a visible violation they wont stop you). So on top of the fines, this will be an added burden on the victim

Very correct, number plates are easy to replicate. Most countries either issue an electronic box or merely accept a Touch Debit/Credit Card

Using cameras for such purpose is either being ignorant or having an agenda.

Just an example of Singapore, which has implemented gantry based barrier free congestion charge based on electronics IUs located in cars more than two decades back is now planning to switch over to satellite based congestion charge system's. And here we are talking about cameras. Feel sad about the advisors to ministers to come with such vintage ideas.

Not to discourage, earlier the same person told gps tracking, now number plate tracking another 3 months down chassis number tracking. toll plazas cannot be abolished, the contractors will go to court for loss of revenue. Agreed if a number plate detection system is in place it will work, now what happens to all the computer and other systems installed for existing toll collection, Junk it, When fastag was introduced the toll operators were paid for upgrading the systems

+1 to this. I have been a victim of such a crime, albeit for my 2-wheeler. I had posted about it in this thread (My experience: Vehicle with the same registration number as mine confiscated by the Excise Dept).

Such news is going to bring much joy to such miscreants and pain to innocent victims. I'm seriously pissed about the frequent, half-baked ideas that our Minister for Road Transport & Highways spouts these days in the media.

Its not the the efficient collection, this infra will help government / other bodies to be more vigilant / track a lot of thing which they want to achieve in the longer run,
They won't mind gaps for some period because eventually when they have number plate tracker covering 100% of highways, copied number plate identification will just be a feature.

I think its a good move, we transitioned from Cash to Fastag really quick, i do not think this will be a challenge

If tolls are removed the real estate will have no barriers in city outskirts .

One added benefit is that this will bring number plate standardization. Now it is a field of creativity.

It might even encourage a new wave of creativity. There's no shortage of people who'd want to avoid paying tolls. They could easily use designer number plates written in their native language.

This number plate reader technology sounds great in theory, but I think we need a better solution for our country. Fastags have been great, except for the inevitable reader malfunctions and people with expired tags blocking the lane.

By law it is standardized. You are supposed to have HSRP.
I was fined for not having HSRP just after initial lockdown in 2020.

Re: Toll payment: Bye Bye Toll Plazas, Enter Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) for direct debit

Utterly senseless approach if implemented. There are way too many issues with a number plate reader based toll collection, some of which are :
1. Fake Number Plate - Just change a single character to enjoy free pass until you get caught
2. Not Enough Balance to Debit - No barrier, who is gonna stop you?
3. Non-Standard Plate won't get Detected - Wrong fonts, dirty plates etc
4. Undetectable Plates for Closely Tailgating Vehicles - This is the most important one, how can they implement such a system in a country with so many vehicles on the road? This is impractical for high vehicular density areas. One could simply tailgate closely behind a bigger vehicle to avoid the camera from capturing the plates, this is already happening with the current Fastag system. On our highways one could easily drive between two big trailers by adjusting speed to avoid the camera both from front and back.

Looks like just another hype talk like the GPS based toll collection one. At least the GPS one was more practical if they figured out the insufficient balance case. The current Fastag system with barrier is the only practical solution if they really want to collect tolls. Only thing to do is to improve the infrastructure since the Fastag readers don't work at times and most of the time the readers takes it's own sweet time to read the Fastag which causes unwanted delay and queuing at toll plazas.

Re: Toll payment: Bye Bye Toll Plazas, Enter Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) for direct debit

Aiyo! I got a fasttag for my car about six months ago, and used it for the first time last week. And now I hear it obsolescent already!

(No, I don't do much out of town driving, and yes, it was a relief when it worked first time, as I was taking a friend to an important appointment.)

I am so out of touch with driving in my mother country (GB) that I don't know how they charge tolls there now. I am familiar with licence-plate recognition for imposition of an average speed limit over a stretch, and I believe that it is now part of the Big Brother who's-where-and-why set up
