Its strange, First you built well paved roads to reduce travelling time and then because of accidents or whatever reasons you impose a speed limit , doesnt that nullify the entire idea of building that road.

How will imposing a ridiculios speed limit of 40kmph help, I mean shouldnt they educate the driver, they have done the same with the Mum_pune expressway..
when accicdents started pilling up they reduced the speed limits I mean its like switching off the internet if your young ones surf Porn rather than educating them.

Well its Shantanu's mistake for going at 56kmph, they had imposed speed camera's on palm beach road with speed limit of 60kmph (i know people are going :eek:) But the speed camera is no more there because people were driving above 120kmph and the camera never flashed, haha.

well had a similar experience about 3 years back in mysore. I was riding my two wheeler on one of the best stretches of road in mysore. everyone maintains atleast 60 on that stretch. i was doing around 40km.
One mamu(this is how we call a cop affectionately ) jumped in front of my bike and told to stop. Thought ok routine license check and pulled out my DL. Mamu tells me to go to inspector who was writing receipts, so went there and showed my DL, he asked my bike number and he coolly wrote out a challan for 300 bucks. I asked him what for? he said speeding. Now i am in shock. I asked him what was the speed i was doing. He gave me the photograph of me and my bike and on it was written 34 km/hr. I asked him what the hell is the speed limit and where is the board saying so.
Prepare for this Shock

He gave a printed piece a paper from his jeep and asked me read it. The speed limit mentioned goes like this
Within City limits----20km/hr
State highways-----30km/hr
National highways----40km/hr:Shockked:
....
and lots of other crap.

Kept my bike there and asked him which police station ill pick up later. Called my Dad and his friend went to the police station and my dad's friend who was then an MLA blasted the Inspector in the station, asked him to tear up the challan given to me. the situation was very hilarious.:Cheering:
20km/hr within city limits, 30 in state highway, 40 in National highway!!!!!!
Are we in some stone age. Even if we run faster we would be breaking the speed limit LOL.

Obiviously India is Shining as said by politicians. But we cant see that shine because of the speed limit LOL

Hope you have the receipt with you. Ask the concerned police station / commissioner / whatever officer where the traffic signs are. Use your rights under the RIght to Information Act. I believe that even in city limits, in Kerala, light motor vehicles are allowed to go at 70KMPH, unless there is a prominent sector where the speed is limited.

I am serious about the right to information act thing. In kerala, you just go to a stamp vendor, get a 10 rupee stamp, stick it on to a A4 size paper, make sure that your return address and name of the officer you are addressign is there, and say just two sentences: not more, not less:- "I want infromation on <whatever>, and I am willing to pay additional fee for the information required." Just send this by registered post, and you will see results.

Dont they have a 10% tolerance or something? The speed cameras in US take a picyure if you go 11 miles above speed limit.
And how the hell are you gonna know that you are 13 kmph over speed limit?Your speedo may be wrong, the hand held radar detector may not be tuned (they need to be tuned every day or so in the US for the tickets to be valid) and there are so many other things that could be wrong.

Get the facts right. There is a toll road between Hubli and dharwar (part of B'lore Pune highway, 4 lane road - excellent drive, speed limits not imposed strictly). But this is a longer route and takes close to 45 mins to get from hubli to dharwar. all buses and trucks use this road.

Old road that goes through RTO etc, is much shorter - but because of were speeding there were numerous accidents. That is when police/RTO piloted with limiting speeds. And it is very important in this section to limit speeds, otherwise number of accidents would be high.

I was reminded by multiple people about this speed limit by many of them and hence i was careful. But definitely its not to fill police men's pockets.

Well, accidents can happen even at 40 kmph. So a better idea to prevent accidents is to have the driver of the car push it instead of driving it. That way no accidents will ever happen. Better yet, build speed breakers every 10 meters and dig up trenches in between and make the driver push the car.

On a serious note though, having a very low speed limit on highways will actually cause accidents instead of preventing them. The number of vehicles entering a stretch of highway will not be the same as the number of vehicles exiting it if the speed is too low. This will clog up the roads, make people impatient and lost attention resulting in accidents.

40 KMPH on any main street/highway is attrocious. In the US such low speed limits are imposed only in school zones, private driveways and parking lots. And then have a bunch of corrupt cops impose these rules is even more attrocious.

And just out of curiosity, what makes you assume that the cop who collected the fine was corrupt?

I do not get the police/RTO piloting convoys. I am not familiar with the road in question but personally I have never heard of police leading convoys of vehicles to limit speeds. It just doesn't sound practical to me.
Even if the police were kind enough to lead convoys of vehicles (this usually happens in naxal infested areas of AP and not in cities), how can there be 'numerous accidents'? Just doesn't make sense to me at all. Can someone be kind enough to explain?

The corruption comment was about cops in general and not in this particular case. Enforcement of speed limits is just another excuse for the cops to extract a bribe. If the speed limit is 40 and you are caught going at 41, whats is to stop an overjealous copfrom writing a ticket? And if he is a corrupt cop, he would threaten to write a ticket if bribe is not paid.

You're missing the point here. The question is not whether there shud be a limit or not. The question is, why did they have to go and make it 40kmph? I've driven on this road a million times and i still don't see how 40kmph can be justified to be the ideal limit.

Moreover, if you're stuck behind a truck doing 40kmph, you can't even overtake the bugger (for the next 21kms) since you'd be breaking the limit while doing so.

I think right for information is the way to go.

Why speed limit of 40kmph???

Submit the receipt and ask for information about "the reason and criteria for a particular speed limit at a particular place".

Let them know that we have a right to know.

What? You cant cross the speed limit when overtaking?
I am learning so many new things here... the last time I was in India, you could drive as fast as your vehicle could take you and that is usually 50 -60 kmph before you hit the next pothole/speedbreaker.

Regards RTI: I think RTI is for 'what' and not 'why'. If you ask them why the limit is set at 40 kmph, you would probably hear 'we thought it is the safest top speed' and there is nothing you can do about that.
