Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

As pointed out by many fellow members.. Driving on the Mum-Pune expressway is a nightmare now! I am not against following rules but having DIFFERENT speed limits at different points of the same highway does not make any sense.. I have been fined twice on the same day on some occasions! :(

I also got fined at exact same spot 3 days ago i was doing 87 on a near empty road. I have been driving on eway since last 8 years and this is my first speeding ticket.

I know its worthless but i will try and raise a dispute on this one.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

Travelling on this expressway has become less of comfort more of a nuisance.

It's pretty clear that the intention is just to rip people off. Straight stretches with 70 or 80 speed limits. The entry from Pune side has a sudden mention of 80 Kmph limit. Pretty clear it is to catch anyone unaware who starts driving at 90-100 or over speeds after jostling through Pune traffic.

Recently found out in Hexa owners group that you can be fined if both the hands aren't on the steering wheel too. Surprised there's no mention of it here. Mobile phone in hand is acceptable, but both the hands on steering wheel? There needs to be a clarity on this.

Here's an article on it way back from 2020

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

To all members, stick to 80 kmph on plain road and 50 kmph in Ghat section. I agree that it's a nightmare for many of us but believe me you won't get a ticket. Total time to cover the expressway may increase by just 15-20 minutes. Earlier we had long queues when Fastag was not in use, which wasted our 10-15 minutes sometimes 30 mins too including both toll plaza lines. We are still faster by 5-10 minutes.

I was driving at perfect 80 kmph on 5th Feb, while coming back from Pune and managed to avoid a pile up due to the low speed. I had driven at 100 kmph earlier but now settled down at 80 and it feels very very comfortable.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

Honestly, the old Mum-Pune highway is a better driving experience now. From palm beach road onwards to the uran stretch and then on to khopoli is so smooth. Onwards to Pune the toll is much lower, no stress of controlling speeds with sudden appearance of speed limit signs and badly placed speed limit signs, no risk of catching a Rs 2000 challan and better places to have a meal or a quick bite.

Does this work perfectly in India? And will the gps version make any difference?

For me it works well enough but nothing is perfect. If you are over speeding by a huge margin then no device will work because you have just a couple of seconds to lower your speed to the speed limit. For example if you are driving at 140 in a 100 zone you will have to slam on the brakes to come down to 100 but if you are doing 120 you can easily slow down. I have not been fined for speeding since I have bought this device.

I have not used the GPS version so have no idea but the specs are identical.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

Just an update basis my recent Mumbai - Pune - Mumbai trip earlier this week.

What really irritates is - there are speed-limit signs within 100 meters of each other showing different speed limits - so for example - you'd come across a circle shaped sign showing 80, followed by another rectangle shaped sign showing 100 (for LMV) / 80 (for HMV) and then another one circle shaped sign showing 80 - all within like 100 meters of one-another, and can be captured in one single photo frame.

The circle-shaped 80 kmph signboards seem to be newer ones - as part of the Mahindra & MSRDC's Savelife Foundation initiative. So if indeed the speed-limit for the expressway is reduced now to 80, then the older rectangular sign-boards are still there (and in most places within 100 meters of the new ones).

Not to mention the intermittently dispersed signboards showing 50 and 30 (!!!) as speed limit of a so-called EXPRESSWAY.

Plus of course the 80 speed limit inside the tunnels

I honestly felt that if one were to strictly follow the speed limit for each section / sub-section, it is in fact more dangerous and susceptible to being rear-ended.

One must actually record the whole drive along the expressway strictly following this abrupt 80 to 100 to 80 to 50 to 30 to 80 to 100 speed-limit and put in on YouTube - will make for great viewing!!

As for my drive - fully knowing that I MAY be in violation of speed-limits in some sections, I kept the speed-limited on 99 throughout the expressway (while reducing speed to 75 inside the tunnels).

It's been 3 days since and I wouldn't have been surprised if I'd gotten some speeding tickets - thankfully none as of yet and hoping that stays (any clue if the tickets show up on the website immediately?)

Is the INR 2000 fine per incident? If you get flashed twice, you get a INR 4000 fine, I presume?

Fined by Police Cameras

While I was going through different posts, I realized that though all of us love clicking our road beauties though our lens, have you ever admired the beauty of the car, albeit you had to pay a heavy fine for it?

Well, yes, though surely not a great moment in our riding lives, however, some of us mortals do get caught on the wrong side of the law. I am sure just like me, we are BHPians are firm believers and followers of the traffic / road rules. So, when I paid my penalty for the first time, I was unhappy that I did the unthinkable. It was not the monetary aspect but my lapse of judgement or call it the negligence.

So, while I did rue on this, on the positive side, I am happy that this is something that will make me a more careful driver from now on.

So, now that I have admitted my culpability, how about starting a thread that shows the clarity of police camera and more importantly, how does your beauty look on the road in a candid click? Here is my candid caught by Maharashtra police on the Lonavala ghats.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

I recollect when I got a challan for the first time, I received a SMS on the mobile within 2 hours of the incident. This time, nothing. As I have known from others, they never receive any SMS. Similarly, I didnt receive anything this time. Call it my gut feel, as I drove such a long distance Satara to Mumbai, I thought of checking on the official website after a week, and there was a challan patiently waiting to be paid.

I wonder if someone never bothers to check, does it invite for penalty too? Also, I don't seem to understand this logic of not sending SMS when they have the details. Talk about digitization.

Probably because when you are caught, you definitely pay the base ticket amount which goes to the government, plus the penalty, or bribe the cop to not pay the penalty.

Win win situation for the govt and cop.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

Sometime in 2nd week of Dec, 2021 I received an sms from Maharashtra traffic police informing that if I don't pay the fine by 31st Dec, I would be liable for court action. Terrified, I searched frantically for any challan on the mParivahan app but there was none. Searched the echallan website and again nothing. I concluded that it must have been a mass SMS sent by MH traffic police, for the people to pay fine - if they had got a ticket. As I could not see anything on the app or portal, I assumed that I had not got a ticket. Then in Feb this year just as I was coming out of traffic jam on the Pune - Nashik highway and stepped on gas, I saw the infamous Ertiga under a tree that flashed and I knew I had a speeding ticket now for sure. Next day I went to the website and yes, there I was with a ticket for Rs.1000/- , but something was amiss. The photo in the fine was of Mumbai Pune Expressway and not Pune Nashik highway. Puzzled I looked at the details - and lo and behold, it was a speeding ticket from almost exactly 1 year back. I was fined at doing 108 in a zone of 100 and that was the reason for receiving the court action sms back in Dec, 21. It was just coincidence that the details on the portal were available now. So friends, if you have been snapped then the ticket will come definitely. It may take long time, like in my case almost a year but it will come. For sure we are now more concerned watching the speed limit boards rather than enjoying the drive and "spirited driving" can still be done - in our dream.

Re: Speeding fine on Mumbai-Pune E-way raised to Rs. 2,000

Please note that the speed limit in the ghat section has been reduced from 70kmph to a ridiculous 50kmph.
Received a chalan. You have and interceptor vehicle parked just after the khopoli exit on the slope towards the food plaza. Its a beautiful road and very difficult to maintain this ridiculously low speed limit. Its become a business for the cops to complete their targets.
I can understand if a fine is received for over speeding above 100kmph.
