Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Voted for high. I am currently on the lookout for a new car with a seating position such that I do slide in after opening the door.

In my current car, its like sitting down and ingress and egress is getting difficult with each passing year. Also the back pain after driving for 90 mins each way to and from the office does not help things a bit. Highway rides are less - very low - so I do not really need a low seated / planted car.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

High seating is surely getting more & more popular. While it does have its own advantages, there’s some magic to the low seating of sedans. A combination of both would be the best for me – keep changing between the two…

More than the height, I would believe the construction and quality of the seats would make a lot of difference, and also our posture. While very subjective, seat ergonomics does play a huge role. I haven’t found a seat more comfortable than my previous ride – the XUV5OO – both the driver seat as well as the others.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

I'd vote for the high seating position.

I have a Honda City and a i10 NIOS. I travel frequently between Chennai and Trivandrum and I have done that circuit on both the cars. I realized that when I do this distance in the City, my back is stiff (duh!) but gets better after a good rest but when I do that in the NIOS, my back is relatively fine but I feel very wobbly at the end - not exactly vertigo but an unstable sensation which ultimately passes after an hour or so. I guess this has to do with the body roll as a result of the stance of the NIOS. I'd assume this would be much higher in larger vehicles. I also feel fresher in the NIOS than in the city. Partly because I like the back and under thigh support in the NIOS compared to the city.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Low seating position, anyday!

Might be a great example of the phrase "Familiarity breeds contempt". All my life, I have owned and driven SUVs, and cars that had higher seating position.

First low seated car was my 2006 swift diesel, which was an eye opener on how much fun one can have on a car with lower body roll and lower seating.

Beyond that I have always enjoyed driving sedans and hatchbacks over tall boy hatches and SUVs.

Even currently, if I were to navigate through ghats/ twisties/ highways, I would anyday pick my kwid 1.0 over Celerio 1.0 & Altroz 1.5 over my Storme V400.

To be chauffeured around, I will happily choose the Safari Storme 10/10 times. When it comes to driving, it's just the opposite.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Voted for High.
Been driving Old Fiat 1964 model, then Padmini of my dad .
Later mine Zen, zylo, XUV .
All but one high seating.
Want to be sure about both corners visibility in this maddening
trafffic conditions & slowly but surely changed behaviour of drivers of today.
If we want to protect our car, high seating is more suited to Indian conditions of traffic & driver manners.
So voted for High.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

I didn't vote because I like both.

I love cars like City (not really a low seater as you've mentioned), Polo etc. and they are delightful to drive on open road and specially on the highway. I get a more connected feel in a low seating car. If someone has a serious back problem then it's a different matter. Also I think the seat ergonomics and materials/compound plays a role here. City's seats are particularly known for sagging and that creates a problem.

On the other hand, I like higher seating SUVs as well because they are a boon to drive specially on broken roads. You get a commanding view ahead and you can be less anxious if you miss any unmarked speed breaker or pothole in night time driving.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

As low as I can go!

I'm 6 feet tall. My seating position is set to:

Height: Lowest setting possible

Seat-base distance: Generally as far back as possible (maybe 1-2 notches from the rear-most position)

Backrest: As upright as possible. Almost 90°. This also compensates for the seat base being very far back, so the passenger behind me is slightly less unhappy (anyone sitting behind my 6 foot frame will generally be somewhat unhappy).

I feel the key here is to move your butt as far back as possible, and keep the backrest fairly vertical. Results in great support all around.

Driving feels a lot more engaging when positioned like this. With the seat positioned as low as it is, you feel less body roll. The overall drive feels more stable.

It's fairly safe to assume from my above comments that I'm a sedan over SUV guy.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Voted High,
Have driven both kinds for decently long period, High seating is way more comfortable (less tiring) in the longer runs. Personally even in city the visibility from high seating position give additional comfort / peace of mind while driving

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Voted High Driving Position.

Here are my two cents, i think if we take out our own physical limitations like a bad back etc, ideally, a lot of us might prefer a -Low- seat position, especially in a sedan. (Low seating in an SUV of any sort doesn't make much sense anyway.)

However, with the continuous improvement in vehicle safety (which I'm not complaining about) our dashboards have gotten higher along with our window sills. Sit in any modern sedan with the seat set to full low & its like looking out through the slit opening of a letter-box ! ( I am 6ft tall for anyone wondering)

Add to this, the state of our roads & the constant need to watch out for potholes & its almost too dangerous to sit in a low-seating position.

So my preference for a high seating position, is certainly out of circumstance & our driving environment being far from "ideal".

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

I've been largely a sedan user all through my life till I bought a crossover(Seltos) couple of years back. Now that i've tested blood, I can't think of a car with low seating position. Despite all the flip side of a high seating, it's merits outweigh the demerits. Hence my preference is a high seating and voted accordingly.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Just cant stand high seats, especially when chauffeured around
I have motion sickness and migraine which gets worsened by high seat ride
I would on any day pick up an ergonomic firm seat which is low than a flat bench which is high and too soft.
The problem with some low seats is lack of adequate underthigh support, which causes your legs to be stretched in front which is bad for your knee and back. Good underthigh support and an ergonomic firm seat with good lumbar support is all you need for a back and knee friendly ride. Very high and very low seating can be bad for you.

From my experience
- Innova Middle row is a frequent cause of motion sickness for me
- Seltos rear seat is the worst I have been to - Bumpy, uncomfortable and lacking underthigh support
- The old Dzire seats are just perfect to be chauffered around in, especially if you firm up the cushions
- S cross front seats were the best - Perfect balance between high and low seating

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

I love to sit low down. For some reason it gives me a feeling of control and confidence to take corners at speed. But with age, I guess I will have to move to a higher seating position so that my back does not give up on me

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Having driven fairly extensively in all kinds of driving positions - the low, pushed back position in a Polo to the somewhat tall seating in an i10 and the neither-too-high-nor-too-low position in a WRV to the high seating in the Sonet which I drive currently, I'd say that the benefits of a high driving position far outweigh those of a low position.

In addition to the obvious benefits to your back, it makes both highway and city driving, and parking much easier. I recently got back from a 2200 km round trip and the fatigue factor was negligible. The greater visibility helps you in planning your overtakes as well as in negotiating pothole-ridden roads much better. The only downside IMO is that you feel the body roll much more on winding roads.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

I always fancied a high driving position. I envied the people seating higher in cars and with a better view ahead while I struggled to see what's happening ahead in a jam. My first encounter was ertiga and the Hexa, Safri, owned by friends. But I soon realised that my body was not meant for a high seating position with the angle of the neck slightly negative angulated towards grounds whereas in sedans my neck would be parallel to the ground and was a more comfortable position for me in the long driving. I believe that it would finally come to individual body styles and comfort levels than perception. Voted for low seating position.

Re: Low vs High driving position – Your choice?

Can't vote yet but I prefer a high driving position. A suboptimal back and the fact that apart from my 1st car, a M800, all have had higher seats are my reasons for saying so
