Hi, I tried contacting Kotak FasTag, there was no response from kotak fastag toll free number, however I raised a compliant on the Kotak fastag website itself on the compliant section. I did not get any response or refund. Kotak Mahindra FasTag is useless, my other cars (Crysta, Qualis and Wagon R) run on PayTM FasTag, so far the experience is seamless.

I immediately get an SMS and app notification as soon as I cross the toll gate. But with Kotak, the response time is worse, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.

Walk away with your business. Close your Kotak FASTag account and move to Paytm. That is what I did with HDFC Bank (another useless issuer) with 2 of my earlier cars and moved to ICICI Bank. Net cost to you will be 200 bucks which was the cost of the tag itself.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

A bit out of topic but still relevant.

There's a set process to seek refund when you've been charged twice, cash and via Fast Tag; minor red flag.

What bothers me the most is when toll is collected for roads that aren't in good shape. Example - I did Bengaluru --> Hubbali --> Bengaluru last weekend. No less than 20 deviations and speed breakers, and 50 deviations and 150 speed breakers(w/o warning) on the way back.

Nearly INR 1.1 per km is charged. Reminds me of THIS.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

I faced the same issue while coming to Delhi at Manesar toll plaza yesterday. In my case, although the operator mentioned that the Fastag is blacklisted. We were not sure what has been the reason and paid cash. We got the message intimation within 15 minutes of leaving the plaza about the amount being deducted from the Fastag account.

Incidentally this is the second time this has happened with my driver within a fortnight. The first time it happened while coming to Delhi, we dismissed it as a technical glitch and didnot take it seriously. This time around, I too was travelling in the vehicle and this time I am a witness to the way this robbery is committed. We paid Rs 65 at the toll and am sure by the end of the day, operator must be collecting a decent sum fleecing unsuspecting commuters.

Usual ploy seems to be to tell that the Fastag is blacklisted and ask for cash. I was thinking of sharing the experience here and the thread is godsend.

Yes, I was thinking of the same. Our Innova is almost 12 years old and is in perfect mechanical condition. Innova's windshield has some scratches and swirlmarks over the years of abuse. So I'm planning to get it replaced soon. I'll apply for a new tag from PayTM this time after changing the windshield.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

I have faced this multiple times and each time I stood my ground and got the operator to use a handheld scanner or let me go for free.

I use ICICI fastag and you can call their number 8010928888 from your registered mobile and you will receive a SMS instantly with balance and status of your tag.
I use this to counter "Blacklisted" "no balance" non sense. It has worked every time. Either you deduct from my tag or let me go free. I am not paying if their scanner or server is not working.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

Have faced this a couple of times on Murthal toll at NH-44 (erstwhile NH-1) and Manesar toll at NH-48. Was told by the toll operator of some problem in the reader.

Refused to pay cash and Dialled 1033 in front of the operator to register a complaint.

Was let go without cash as soon as the operators realise that the complaint is actually being made.

Fun Fact: Amount Deducted from Fastag account every time

In a week's time I got the 41 rupees back.
Same story, happened at the toll naka in Lonavla before Kinara village Dhaba. Don't remember the exact amount but had to upload a pic of the receipt and money got refunded back in Paytm wallet.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

This is real good information.

I recall on one occasion, a toll plaza on NH-16 (forgot which one) let us pass by noting down our car registration number since their link to Fastag system was not working, they even tried couple of times with hand scanner but no luck. Later on by midnight they initiated the charge and I got notification of the debit, the ideal gentleman's way of going by the book.

On the NH-16 there is this one Toll plaza just after Bhubaneshwar that have no Fastag scanners mounted and always I have to end up paying in cash, once I had to use Credit Card to get past since I was low on cash. Is it only the Fastag board over the lanes that identifies a Toll Plaza as Fastag enabled? How do I know whether to argue or not?

The other thing to note is during crossing state / country borders (Bhutan for example) where the entry time written on the receipt or the SMS from the debit transaction is proof of time and date of entry, I think it is wise to pay in cash and collect the receipt as token of entry / exit though the border, otherwise one may face harassment later on if some situation arise related to the same.

I tried calling that number just now - it rings twice and then comes up with "Call Failed". I did this multiple times, same result.

Cheers

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

I have Airtel FASTags. Their FAQ states (https://www.airtel.in/fastag-faq):

"20. How would I pay if the ETC equipment at Toll plaza are not working?

In case the ETC equipment are not working inspite of having sufficient balance in the FASTag, you will have to pay cash at the toll plaza. Additionally, please call our customer care and also report the issue with the concessionaire."

This seems to be incorrect going by the gazette notification shared earlier on this thread. Can someone comment?

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

This had happened to me back in February this year while I was going to Pune from Mumbai.

It was my first time driving outstation after installing the Fastag and at the first toll entered the lane without the Fastag scanner and paid for the toll all the way to Pune. After driving for a few kms I received a message from Axis Bank saying the money was deducted from my Fastag account. I was totally shocked looking at this as I had entered a lane without the scanner.

So, at the next toll complaint about it to the attendant and he asked me to reach out to the helpline number pasted on the booth.

I clicked a picture of the receipt and the sms I received and shared it on the number via whatsapp and email but never received a response. Tried calling a few times as well but no response.

So on the way back I just pointed at the Fastag sticker on my car irrespective of the lane I was in and proceeded without paying cash. Once back in Mumbai I contacted Axis Bank and emailed them the details and got the refund back in my account.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

Well, this happened on the long weekend. The shantigrama toll plaza (Bangalore to hassan) Where there was a jam more than a kilometre! I somehow crawled to the toll plaza and the the lane I was crawling in was cash lane. However, I thought all the lanes were equipped with fastag scanners and there are no exceptions. When I rolled up at the counter I was asked to pay up. I showed him the tag and told no cash! He was very bullish in demanding cash and told fast tag won't work. I had already pissed with the kilometre long jam and I just yelled telling I have no cash no card do what you can. He responded with cash is the only way. ( In the mean time I was pulling out cash) but he just asked me to go and guess what? A few minutes later got the transaction message! This seems to be a common practice across the tolls.

Re: Scam alert! Asked to pay cash for toll, despite having Fastag on my car!

In TN, there is a double charge if a non-fastag car drives through the exclusive fast tag lane and a big notice board is displayed to the drivers.

If a car drives through exclusive cash lane (with or without fast tag), they will only give one-way entry and do not provide round trip tickets. They say to avail round trip ticket, fast tag is the only way. Not sure if the same rule is followed in all toll plazas.
