Which documents to keep in my car? Original / Photocopy / Digital

I'm looking for clarity on what relevant documents do I need to have onboard my car.

I keep a digital copy of every single travel related document, for my entire family, in my OneDrive - it's available anywhere with internet.

But I realize some docs are best kept at-hand. I just need to know which. - RC, Insurance, PuC, and DL are the obvious ones.

1. Any other document which I should carry - specially if I plan to drive around between states?

2. Which of these documents need to be original?

I went through the basics at this link but it wasnt clear to me what is definitely needed on board and that if a prinout would do, or are originals needed.

re: Which documents to keep in my car? Original / Photocopy / Digital

It's simple. You need to carry all original documents with you whenever you drive in your city, on a highway or interstate.
Documents include your driving license, RC (smart card, paper or booklet), PUC and Insurance. This is for private vehicle owners.
However as per new Motor vehicles Act, you can carry your license and RC in digital format on government apps like DigiLocker or Parivahan. However I would suggest to carry your original Aadhar card at least, as proof of identity. And now it all depends on the cop who catches you. If he wants to extract money, it can be in anyway.

re: Which documents to keep in my car? Original / Photocopy / Digital

As per the IT Act 2000, and the Motor Vehicle Act, issued documents (issued by the Govt) are legally acceptable by the authorities. My originals are at home. I have the DigiLocker app installed, with the relevant documents pulled. I also carry xerox copies, "just in case".

I have used DigiLocker successfully multiple times at the airport (show my Aadhar card soft copy as proof of identity) as well as to show my driving license near Goa once. The cop seeing my MH registration did try to act smart, but when I pointed out what the app says (highlighted in the images), he grudgingly let me go.

I too carry zerox copies. In fact I have my RC notarized for 50 rupees, to be extra safe.

re: Which documents to keep in my car? Original / Photocopy / Digital

I always use DigiLocker for my DL and Registrations as I do not wish to carry originals. All I carry is a copy of attached circular if any cop refuses to accept the DigiLocker documents, I show this. Here in Bangalore, most cops let me go when I show them the Digilocker documents and there was just one case when a cop did refuse to accept it. I showed him the circular and he let me go without further questions.

Quote:
These electronic records available on DigiLocker or mParivahan are deemed to be legally recognised at par with the original documents as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

No Need to Carry License, RC, Insurance from Oct 1 as Per New MV Rules

Probably we need to keep a digital version saved in phones?

https://www.news18.com/news/auto/now...s-2917933.html

Good initiative, will prevent harassment from cops stopping to check
documents .

Wonder what's up with the implementation of "One Nation - One Road Tax" policy. No news yet.

That is a very interesting step and probably a very good initiative from the government. But in this case, we all must need to have our documents in Digi locker? Or any digital versions shall be good enough?

Sorry but what's new about it? This is very old news - IIRC this decision was already taken last year. I think this is just clickbait news you have shared unless there's something additional that was amended recently.

Digi locker or mParivahan. Since the decision last year, the central govt has amended the laws; but individual city based traffic constables have their own interpretation. Using govt apps atleast reduces the probability of conflict.

This is good news but has this trickled down to the traffic cops yet?
Do they know?

Re: No Need to Carry License, RC, Insurance from Oct 1 as Per New MV Rules

I would not be happy to hand over my phone to a cop or someone who is checking the details. There should be a way to check all details by the cops on their own phones or a portal. The authenticity of a vehicle's registration, insurance and PUC can be verified by the mParivahan app. But how would they check DL details unless there is some way to verify it digitally? Facial recognition?

One reason why we need a fully functional and digital NCRB.

Re: No Need to Carry License, RC, Insurance from Oct 1 as Per New MV Rules

I am unable to find my driving license on mParivahan or Digilocker. My license is of 19 characters length and mparivahan app only accepts 18 characters. Did anyone else face this issue whereas Digilocker says that its unable to retrieve any details corresponding to my license number.

Not sure if it has any impact, but my license was issued in Andhra Pradesh state.

There have been a few posts on the forum on this being tested out across different cities with varying success - I believe the (accepted) general consensus was to carry xerox copies as a safety net.

A friend had similar issues - his DL was from Ahmedabad, Gujarat RTO, issued nearly 15 years ago. Also a smart card DL and we couldn't figure out the issue resolution.

You'll need to walk into an RTO and report this disparity. They ultimately need to bring all kinds of outdated data elements and assorted data definitions (maximum lengths, alphanumeric versus numeric etc.) to one current definition and enter it into the system. My boss had to do this and it's all sorted out now.

As always, the policies seem to be in the right direction but the implementation simply sucks!

Generally it is 15 character long and in some cases it will be 16 character one.
The format will be

XXYY2007zzzzzzz or XX-YY2007zzzzzzz.

Here XX - State code (like KL / KA / AP / TN etc)
YY - (2 digits) RTO code (Ex. KR PURAM in Karnataka 53)
2007 - Year of Licence issue
zzzzzzz - 7 digit licence number. (If it's a 4 digit number, preceding 3 zeros will be added to make it 7 digit).

This was the earlier approach. I'm not sure if any change is made to this now a days.

You can try to make your number into this format and a search. Good luck
