re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

My opinion may be cruel as felt by some members, but remember that it doesn't feel cruel by someone whose hard earned money is ruined by strays.
Talking to neighbors to stop feeding the dogs would not work because once the street dogs start living in a street, they own it and can survive on any filth.
Buzzers or CCTV surveillance - you arrive to remove the dogs from the Car roof only after the damage is done.
One thing I can assure you is that dogs cannot or do not climb over Maruti Gypsy, as mine has never had a paw mark on it.

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

I had the similar problem a decade ago, what I did was, I parked my car in one of neighboring apartments for a week so that dogs will find an alternative for few days
and get accustomed to their new sleeping place.

After this I bought a good quality car cover and started covering car daily, from then on I never saw them climbing on to my car.

I guess it is difficult for dogs to climb on to covered cars, as the material of cover is little slippery.

This Duster is supposed to be my dad’s retirement car. Being from Motor Insurance, he says getting Insurance claim for all 4 sides is not possible and wouldn’t end the situation either. Just so that everyone knows how UTTER PAINFUL when you see your cars like this :

No they aren’t. I’ll see what can be done. Thanks Keroo.

I like how you get so hypothetical. The cars didn’t come overnight. I hope you do understand the fact that dogs don’t take a ‘gradual’ route of coming occasionally or on alternate days to alert us. Once, they ‘mark’ their territory it becomes their unless repelled.
Anyways, thank you for the helpfulness.

Hi Bluevolt. It appears that these dogs are much of a problem amongst us Delhiites. How are you managing?

Trust me Storm2.0, the neighbours are no less themselves. Literally everyone in the neighbourhood has had a tiff with them. Anyways, you know anything about the buzzer?

So we have CCTV cameras focussed on both of our cars and whenever we notice dogs attempting to jump over a car, I just shoo them away. Mostly after 4-5 attempts, the dogs are humble enough to understand that the owner won't let them sit on the car's roof and they stop coming thereafter.

I suggest you installing CCTV cameras for your car to keep a vigil.

Well, a lot of us here liked the way you kept changing your versions on what it is you did to the strays (once there was concern expressed by multiple members on how you were dealing with the nuisance caused by the strays).

What, you mean the dogs really did not warn you? Sorry, I assumed that they did lol. That sarcasm in your post apart, what part of planning parking spaces for your cars do you not get? The strays should I guess suddenly modify their natural instincts (just because we suddenly have way more cars than we could park in our own compound) and take to getting hit by sticks/broom/stones thrown at because, well, scratches on our retirement cars look bad, really bad, but the strays being harmed /hurt is ok. Wow.

Turns out I'm not the only one saying that on this thread either. In any case you do choose to gloss over what I penned down on my experience with strays vandalising my car and how it was dealt with compassion on my first post on this thread (which has since been deleted, presumably because it was quoting another member's very vocal post directed against feeders and their psychology). Sorry, it wasn't of much help, but spare us the sarcasm please.

Also, you'd do well to re check CCTV footage to be doubly sure all the scratches made are by the strays and not some miscreant, a couple of them on the sides and on the bonnet look too deep to be caused by strays. Again no sarcasm here, just stating what it looks like to me.

Unfortunately that’s all the information I found on a Quora answer mate. It’s some sort of DIY spray type mechanism to douse the animals with water when you see them near your car. You could use the help of someone who has a bit of knowledge about circuits and the like. I’m sure a few BHPians here could help with the technical parts of it if you need any help. You could set up the water spraying end of it on the wall conveniently.

Your parking spots aren’t as bad as I imagined them to be at first; you could easily park your cars nose first towards the wall and then rig up a ‘fence’ or something with cardboard or wire mesh around the cars. But how on earth did the dogs manage to damage the sides of the Duster? And why tear off the covers? They seem to be a feisty lot!

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

This is what I've seen a lot of houses here in Kerala do. Might sound absurd. Take an empty disposable water bottle and fill it with water and put few drops of Ujala in it. Shake it well to a uniform violet color. Keep this near or on top of your cars. The dogs will stop coming to those places. No idea why. I've seen people line the walls of small temples here with bottles so that the dogs don't jump in to the compound.

The one who sits on the Duster, is particularly a well built, alpha male of the pack.
Yes, they’re very aggresive

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

Sorry not to be able to provide any thing helpful in terms of preventive measures.

Have you tried to talk to your neighbor about this menace?. If not the daughter , her father in private and show the scratches the dogs did to your cars. From what i have seen from the photos, you have enough evidence to claim damages.

Get a few of these (they are even cheaper in nearby hardware stores) and get a seat wala / cover wala stitch custom made covers for your cars.
Put your original car cover, then put this one on top.
I assure you, dogs climbing on top of these shall not scratch your car, unless it's a pack of dogs hell bent on destroying your car.

https://www.amazon.in/TARPEX-Treated.../dp/B06XCSXXCN

You can then use a squirt gun (the holi variety) to squirt water whenever you spot one on top of your cars. Slowly they'll abandon the idea.

Also kindly see if you can get the dogs sterilized by any NGO, as you are a doctor and have good social position.

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

My previous society had this issue due to a pervious boundary. We got in touch with the local SPCA, and they rounded up the dogs over a period of months, spayed them, and humanely deposited them back where they were picked up form. Aggression declined more or less immediately, and a year or two down the line, there only a handful of dogs left in that society. The common meeting ground between those who were bothered and those who fed that any new dog would be chased out.
You can get in touch with them.Spaying typically alters the characteristics of dogs, and they become more pliable. If they are scared once off of your car, they may not get back up again.

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

The best way to tackle is to call frendicoes. They would be better in position to advise you on how to tackle the stray dogs problem you are facing.

These stray dogs are protected by various rulings of Supreme Court and makes it impossible for Municipal authorities to remove them. Also there is powerful lobby which protects these stray dogs.

It is surprising that in developed countries where there is strong dog loving community stray dogs are rare. Dog lovers allow the Municipal authorities to take the stray dog away without impending their work when they are deemed nusiance by people. But in India it is otherway around.

re: How to keep stray dogs away from my car's roof

Keep the hood and top part damp, use a sprinkler every halfanhour or so. That should discourage the dogs. But, it probably is too much of a hassle. But is better than chucking stones at them.

Alternately, get a car cover, spray the engine bay part of the cover with any strong smelling essential oil (eucalyptus/citronella) / even vinegar.
Try on one car, gradually expand.

But, please do not physically harm the dogs.

Any ideas as to where they slept earlier? If you could check and ensure that their earlier resting place is restored, perhaps they may leave your car.

I also liked the idea of leaving open bottles of water on your car roof. Sounds like an easy, doable idea and one that might do the trick.

Sorry to see the extensive damage to your cars. Hope you get a feasible solution without harming the dogs. And thank you in advance for getting them sterilized.

What if their previous resting place was another hapless owner of a Car damaged by these strays ? He may have performed the tricks suggested, to get rid of the evil and you want to send them back to him ?
