Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted for useless.

For the last 3 years, using a car with cruise control and have barely used it few times. Sometimes I even forget that my car has a cruise control. I am a regular in the Chennai-Bangalore highway and as such the roads are very wide and nicely maintained. My average cruising speed is between 100-120 km/hr. But in cruise control mode, I am only comfortable if the speed is less than 90 km/hr. After that speed, I somehow don't really feel in control of the car in cruise mode.

So I always drive without cruise in highways but use it for few seconds every hour to stretch my knees.

Like many have mentioned, it might be good in countries like USA & UAE but definitely not in India.

Like this, there are many gimmicky features in modern day cars which are of not much use in my opinion.
- Push Button Start
- Auto Headlamp
- Auto Wipers
- All those Chrome add-ons, etc.

And there are features that I felt was not really necessary before, but now I think should be standard.
- FATC
- Rear Parking Camera
- Front Parking Sensor

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

I have found it useless in Indian context. I have used in just for the sake of trying it out and for monitoring the best FE numbers. I have found it to be more strenuous when cruise control is activated on high-ways as you have to be extra cautious because you are not adjusting the speed according to the traffic conditions. On my C220D, there is a coasting feature and I don't see it getting activated in cruise control mode but it kicks in under normal mode in ECO driving mode and it returns better FE for me, so I prefer to drive in ECO mode for long cruising.
The only time I prefer to use it, is to keep the speed under check where there are speed limits.
Adaptive cruise control may be much more useful in our context but unfortunately none of the cars I use has it.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted Useful.
I think the usefulness of CC depends on where one is doing his/her maximum of travelling. In congested cities/towns filled with pot-holed/broken roads, CC is useless. Within city limits is where maximum of us commute daily to work.
But places with good roads and less traffic is where some of us can find it to be useful.
I for instance travel daily to work for 35kms(to and fro) with 30% town and 70% highway roads and I use cruise control whenever and wherever I can. For daily use, it helps in obtaining a better fuel economy and for long runs, for a more relaxed ride comparatively.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

I find this as an amazing feature specially for my long highway journeys. I travel frequently to my village using Yamuna express way and Agra Lucknow Expressway. And on both these roads you get long stretches where cruise control can be easily used. I am not someone who over speeds so I set my limit at 100kmph and then sit back and enjoy the roads.

Even on normal roads, a cruise control feature helps you to give your leg some much needed rest specially the one on the accelerator.

Here are pics of roads that I travel frequently

To me, it is useless ! i had an XUV5oo for 3 years with Cruise Control functionality and only once i tried it for sometime and then reverted to Normal driving. After that, i never touched that button.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

In my case it's been very useful. Although, adaptive cruise control is something that I'd love to have in my car but definitely not on Indian roads. In India, I use cruise control all the time, starting from driving at 20 kph inside my office, maintaining speed limits on Delhi roads and on the highways. I mostly travel early morning on Mondays. I've got so used to using CC that driving a car without CC feels a little awkward.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

voted useful. Most of my drives are on highways between Bangalore and Coimbatore. Since Nov 2019, after I switched from Innova to Seltos, I'm finding it very useful. If nothing else, helps me avoid speeding. I just get it to 90-95 range and let it cruise. When I have to change the speed, I do that and get to some 85kmph and hit resume. So peaceful to the right leg. Only downside I had seen is that on hot afternoons, with cruise and ventilated seats, the urge to sleep is little more.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

With so many intersections, people jaywalking on highways, bikes cutting across lanes and cattle/sheep/dogs darting from nowhere onto your path, cruise control is definitely one of the useless features in our cars. I rather have control of the accelerator and be alert to avoid the above.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted for "Useless" although a more apt option would be "less useful". In my many years of India driving with cars having cruise control, I have driven less than 100 km fully on cruise and enjoyed it. Its just not very effective in Indian conditions. May be, you can relax your driving foot for a few minutes, but that's about it. There will be that slow moving truck or overloaded tempo or a 2-wheeler coming right up, (not even counting wayward animals jumping onto the road), that will disturb the momentum, and then its not like you again 'resume' the cruise. You have to mentally re-focus and start all over again. In countries like USA, most of the highway vehicles maintain more or less the same speed (55-70 mph), allowing one to control any interruptions better.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted: useful and it has been useful for me on long trips. yes, it is true that you can not engage it for a long stretch but it serves its purpose every now and then.

Voted as useful

A friend of mine commutes daily 50kms to & fro on a highway, and uses cruise control all the way.

He gets 26kmpl in his Vitara Brezza.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

I like it.

Long back in 2011-2015, we used to do weekly runs to Ahmednagar from Nashik. the road Sangamner to Ahmednagar used to be fantastic and the Scorpio's cruise facility used to provide gentle effortless 80kmph drives. I have also used cruise on the Mumbai Pune e-ways runs though now its more crowded than the usual city road.

With a daily run on the ORR in Hyderabad, I find it as a major missing factor in my 2013 GT TSI

& yes, it is useless in cities, single highways, twisties

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Always useful. It is only a question of where and when you use it. On a road like the Bombay Pune highway, used judiciously, it really gives your right foot some rest.

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted as Useful.

I have used Cruise Control in the following Highways and Toll Roads within City limits as well:

1. Bangalore - Salem - Coimbatore: On multiple trips that I have done to Coimbatore, I have found it very convenient to use Cruise Control. There are vast stretches of straight road and multiple lanes so easy to use Cruise Control.

2. Bangalore - Hassan: Yet another good highway for use of Cruise Control.

3. Elevated Highway from Silkboard to E-City: While it is only a smaller distance, I have used Cruise Control here to ensure the speed remains within limits prescribed

Re: Cruise Control in India - Useful or Useless?

Voted for useless as it is not practical for my driving conditions/style. Even on long highway trips, I feel this function as less engaging and calls for extra vigilance!
