This happened to me yesterday, was on the way to a hill station close by and I was in a good wide well built road when suddenly Google says take a left. This time I just ignored the suggestion and went straight ahead and it rerouted it correctly and the time difference between the both was just 2 min! The problem is if I am not at all familiar with the route then I wouldn’t be as confident to decide to go my way or Google’s way. Even if the route I took was long, it was atleast a good road which is good for mileage unlike Google’s stupid notion that short route is always better. It’s so damn irritating that I really wanted to try a different app like Apple Maps or Mappls/Map my India but not sure at the same time.
Had the same problem few days back while travelling from Ranchi to Murshidabad. We were sent through roads through WB villages with frequent small speed breakers, narrow lanes and people extorting 10-20 rupees at every 50-100 metres for a stretch. On the return leg, it suggested the same route- I took the longer route banking on the fact that at least the state highways of JH are many times better than that of WB, hence took the nearest border to JH. The route was longer but we saved more than an hour and roads were mostly very good & scenic. Even I have not tried Apple maps thinking that it may not be as detailed as G maps but that may be a good thing when it comes to highway driving, who knows.

We already have 2-3 threads on this topic - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/car-e...-maps-ios.html (Apple Maps vs Google Maps in iOS)

I have switched over to Apple Maps completely for a better part of the last 2 years for the exact same reason.
  1. It has always suggested "Bus Routes" by default, sticking to main roads . I have not yet had a negative experience with it so far. With Google Maps I have horror stories. This may lead to increase in travel times as it does not tend to recommend the narrow shortcut roads.
  2. Apple Maps uses Map My India as the backend. So it is able to find most of the places nowadays.
  3. In my regular commute in Bangalore, I am finding that the ETA's at the end of the journey for both of them are similar, even though Google Maps is very optimistic and Apple Maps is very pessimistic.
  4. Apple Maps give Haptic Feedback about turns through the Apple Watch.
  5. Apple Maps tends to stick to bypasses rather than driving through smaller towns. In a recent trip to Pondy via Teambhp's fav route, Apple Maps correctly guided me through all bypasses (ex Vandavasi), whereas Google Maps wanted me to go through the town centres to save a few minutes.

I tend to use Apple Maps for actual navigation in the car, but refer to Google Maps before the start to get more accurate traffic conditions and road closures.

Apple Maps now has a website also to do the trip planning (Earlier a Con) - https://beta.maps.apple.com/

The negative aspects:
  1. There is no OFFLINE MAPS for India.
  2. I am stuck in a beautiful walled garden until Google Maps starts respecting the Pauli Exclusion Principle, i.e two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. (The Ups and Downs of owning an Apple Product)

Good point, let me try apple maps for a while. Yes, Google's traffic indication is really good and useful, but I don't mind loosing that function in return for better road selection. Will cycle between the 2 for a while.

Re: Google Maps is the world's most-used navigation app; Google shares proof

Seems like time to find some good alternative for the Google Maps has come.

I always preferred Google Maps due to the backup of my timelines and other location related data getting recorded in it. But now the timeline backup is going away and we won't be able to see our older timelines, neither the new timelines will be stored on the cloud beyond a certain short period.

The traffic prediction has also gone very inaccurate in the past recent time. Day by day increasing sponsored links on the maps is also contributing in turning the interface cluttered for the car use.

Offline maps feature never been reliably on Google Maps. The moment you lose internet, the locally stored maps do not work, not sure why.

Here WeGo offered much cleaner offline map storage. I used to use this app during the Symbian era on my Nokia 5800 when it was named as Nokia Here or something like that. I always found Here WeGo much cleaner during my occasional usage on Androids but having my database in the Google Maps stopped me to use it extensively.

Waze is also another interesting and unique app which was bought and killed by Google to promote their own Maps. If Waze have been popular in India then it had potential to turn out very useful by now due to it's community based features.

Mapples is also interesting app with lot of potential but their voice guidance has been very irritating when I used it last. But will give it another try since their database is increasing rapidly. I hope someday we reach to the level of Chinese navigation app which is so much interactive that getting in or out of flyovers is so much easier with interactive visuals. Even traffic lights are updated in real time.

Anyways, now I will be trying out other navigation apps including few Indian apps. Although I would like to use an app where I can migrate my old history of Google Maps and then maintain it on the cloud.

It took me 45 mins to travel from Mahalakshmi metro station to Sandal soap factory. I guess because of the holiday many people are heading into malls to spend time.
I was also driven straight into this jam by Google Maps and after I got caught in the jam, the delay timer started increasing. It did not notify nor indicate that there was heavy delays along the route.

Before I left, I had checked Apple Maps and it was started to diverting me to alternate routes. However I trusted Google Maps more for traffic and though there was an anomaly in Apple Maps. This was the straw which broke the camel's back.

Going forward, goodbye Google Maps. You can continue to guide the rest of my countrymen including Delivery people, two wheelers and others to the great traffic jam in the sky.
