Re: Mumbai Coastal Road construction begins (South Mumbai phase)

Coastal road update: 06th Dec. 2020.

Breach Candy shore extends 200-400m after reclamation.

Quote:
Municipal commissioner I S Chahal said the tunnel boring machine (TBM) to be used to drill through Malabar Hill for the underground section of the coastal road is now being assembled on site and will be ready for boring by December 15. The TBM's constituent parts were brought to Priyadarshini Park in April in 17 trailer trucks.

"The sea has receded on account of the reclamation being done for the coastal road. We have completed 17% of the physical work in the last four months and spent Rs 1,281 crore, the highest-ever on the coastal road. Work that had come to a complete standstill has moved at a fast pace," said Chahal.

Re: Mumbai Coastal Road construction begins (South Mumbai phase)

Coastal road project to get another 21 hectares of reclaimed land.

Quote:
The ambitious Rs 15,000-crore has now been given an additional 21 hectares of land. The heard the matter and gave its goahead, much to the dismay of environment activists.

Earlier, the total area required for the project was 90 hectares but now the BMC wants 111 hectares of which 96.51 hectares is for reclamation and 14.45 hectares is for sea wall protection. The 29.2 km-long coastal road project will connect Marine Drive in south Mumbai to Borivali in north Mumbai.

The minutes of the meeting, which was held on October 27 and 28, say that corals will be affected by the reclamation and dolphins will be driven away. The project involves removal of 140 trees and transplantation of 460 trees. One of the opponents of the project said that there should be a span of 200 metres to allow vessels of fishermen to pass.

Advocate Meena Kakalia argued that there is no provision to grant amended Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance and urban conservationist Shweta Wagh said that fresh clearances must be sought by BMC. However, the civic body maintained that the reclamation was necessary and they have proposed spans of 60 metres for boats.

Environmentalist Debi Goenka said, “It is shocking that on the one hand, the MCZMA has quite rightly pointed out that they have no powers to grant post facto clearance in the case of the jetty at Guhagar. Yet, in the case of the coastal road, they have recommended that post facto clearance be granted for the coastal road project,” said Goenka

“In the case of Priyadarshini Park, the MCZMA has accepted the submission made that the lagoon should not be reclaimed. This is exactly the same point that we had made about the coastal road itself – there is no need to reclaim the land between the coastal road and the existing roads,” added Goenka.

Re: Mumbai Coastal Road construction begins (South Mumbai phase)

Went down for a walk on the promenade side of Worli Sea Face after a long time. And was stunned to see the extent of reclamation done, and progress on the Coastal Road. Have also been observing how the entire Bay between Haji Ali and Samudra Mahal has been reclaimed.

Some pictures from my morning walk.

Can’t wait for this to get done - will be great fun zipping down this at least at non peak hours.

Re: Mumbai Coastal Road construction begins (South Mumbai phase)

Just for knowledge for fellow members sharing this brief information about Coastal Road Project.
Main features of Coastal Road Project:
• Length of Road: 10.58 Km
• Number of Lanes: 8(4+4) (in tunnel 3 +3)
• Road on Reclamation: 4.35 KM
• Tunnel: Length of twin tunnel: .2.07 Km each, 11 Mt. internal diameter(3 lane each)
• Underground Car Parking: 04, Total no. of car: 1800
• Total Reclamation area: 111 Ha
• Area for recreational purpose: 70 Ha
• Interchanes:03, Length of interchanges: 15.66 KM
• Promenade: 8.55 KM
• Dedicated Bus Lane
• Sea Wall: 7.47 KM

What’s so special about this project being engineering marvelous:
• The tunnels are being bored by India’s largest diameter (12.19mtr) tunnel boring machine.
• In road transport tunnel first time in India Saccardo Nozzle Ventilation System will be installed.
• First time in India, the bridge will be constructed on Mono pile Foundation.
• In single project, there is the road on reclamation, bridges, interchanges, tunnels under sea as well as hill, creation of green open spaces etc.

Re: Mumbai Coastal Road construction begins (South Mumbai phase)

I stumbled on the costal road project video by Autocar India on YouTube. What a great engineering marvel it will turn out to be! Like Bandra Worli sea link, one more feather on the cap for Mumbai. However, will it really help in traffic decongestion? Apart from relieving the Pedder road traffic, I am not sure.

Might be OT - what are the plans for metro in south Mumbai?

It is the only project in India which includes components like Reclamation, Road on reclamation, Sea Wall, Bridges, Tunnel under sea, State of the art Saccardo Nozzle type ventilation system, Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Interchanges etc. Also it will be signal free and toll free road. Importantly it will create much needed open space around 70 Ha.

As far metro is concerned, Metro line 3 construction is in progress which runs from Colaba in South Mumbai to Andheri Seepz. This Metro 3 is fully underground.
