re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

Ministers have already started objecting in some states. There have been statements like "Humne bohut mahnet ki hai" to become eligible for "lal batti".

- It has yet not been formalized, Nitin Gadkari has written to BJP ministers for voluntary removal, yet 100% positive response is not there. BJP leadership has not issued any internal whip for this.
- Ministers with cabinet ranking (state as well as center) can make do with the beacons of pilot cars
- Even other VIPs with SPG protection will sail through and will not miss the beacon on their cars
- The proposal has not clearly stated on the course of action against violators because this is "one big brotherhood" of VIPs or proclaimed VIPs which includes sitting MLAs, MPs, even the office bearers of ruling / opposition party who have no legitimate right to have beacons on their cars !

Though we talk a lot about reservation, it is in our DNA, special consideration, special authorities, misuse of powers is surrogate "Reservation" and people holding the office of power love to use it - Beacons included !

Let's wait and see the implementation.

A welcome step in the right directions. It would be good if the convoy and Z+ culture is also removed.

Other items that needs to be removed is political flags, and photos of political leaders, and markings on glass and number plate stating MP or any bands (like red band in Hyd), or anything else. The same goes for press and advocate stickers...

re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

Apparently, a ruling in 2013 restricted the use of Red beacons to set of dignitaries.
Did that work ? Yes and No
Yes : Red Beacon was removed
No : Amber Beacon stepped atop

Brownie points for guessing the next beacon's color.

re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

A step in the right direction. This should have been done long time back. The red beacon culture is so rampant and widespread that complete implementation of this proposal will take quite some time to get fully implemented. Moreover there are other means too which are used by vehicle owners to make their way through the traffic and the most common amongst them are sirens and hooters which are used with impunity. The use of these hooters and sirens confuse and startle the motorists and they are forced to give way to the vehicle behind, only to find that it was a private vehicle and not an ambulance or fire brigade. Reining in such idiots would be difficult as it is not possible to make out that what kind of horn is being used in a vehicle. The only remedy in sight for such violations is a blanket ban on the sale of sirens and hooters to the private vehicle owners.

In Hyderabad it is very rampant . Last week got stopped in middle of intersection to allow passage of some minister's car even when the signal was green and yesterday got abused by escort vehicle personnel for not making way swiftly . Everyone is trying to take advantage and bully others on road with stickers like Police , Judiciary , On Govt Duty , Corporator , MLC , MLA MPTC , ZPTC , Revenue Dept , Chairman and the list is endless

Like few people have pointed out already - not the beacon light the 'attitude' needs to be change. Latest example, look at this video, no red beacon but this guy dragged the bike and crushed it without any care to make his way.

Shocked to notice the brazenness with which the driver overran the bike and went away as if nothing has happened. This once again proves that politically connected people are law unto themselves in this country.

Sorry, but what that bike was doing in the middle of the busy road? The clip did not show the entire story it seems, looks like the bike was just blocking the entire road.

Coming back to the topic, mems and the cooks would be the worst hit guys and need to see how this is going to affect the toll gate attendants.

Just try and listen the people around - someone was mentioning that this guy had hit the bike at the last signal. He just dragged the bike till this point without caring for the rider. He was worried about his broken bumper and doesn't gave a heed to the poor rider involved.

I take your point, that it's looking like the bike was blocking the road, but ramming or crushing with your muscular SUV is also not justified.

I am taking my words back, my bad, audio is just not allowed in office and I forgot my head phone today, try to listen when back home.

What you say is correct, but bulling on road is an inherent problem of our society, with or without beacons and of course not limited to SUVs.

re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

I just came back from Indore after a week of stay over there (near Palasia). I see so many vehicles with orange beacons around Palasia, Saket, Patrakar Nagar area. And then also a large number of vehicles with only the sirens mounted atop the vehicle without any orange/red beacon. Many of such vehicles had the stickers of certain political parties on them and some labels like "District President of ...." etc.

A very welcome move indeed, better late than never. I have seen umpteen times these VIP convoys confusing the hell out of civilian traffic. And God knows how much money is wasted in traffic.

re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

I believe only blue lights are allowed on certain category vehicles.
All amber/red lights should be taken off.
Also, the sirens should be removed and done away with, it does not mention anywhere that so and so officer/post holder will be allowed a vehicle with a siren.

Though a step in right direction, lets watch how strong and strict is the implementation.
All 'light' holders need be drilled down with education about the essence of equality, without which they will continue throwing their weight around.

Regards,
JLS

As expected the (dis)Hon CM of Karnataka is very disturbed by this order. He will almost certainly disregard it. Remember he has quite a history of blocking ambulances, and roads.

Re: May 2017: Government does away with red beacons for VIP cars

Sticks & gun pipes peeping out from a SUV's window is enough of a deterrent as is the lathi wielding cop in the pilot car.

You may remove the beacon, but can't remove the roots of feudalism, sad but that is reality.
