Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

I finished DL test for LMV and MCWG today at Bangalore KA51 RTO (Electronic City) and expected to get a DL through post in next 30 days.
Thanks to all the BHPians for the useful posts, which helped me manage this process without agents.

My DL issued from hometown had expired recently.
I worked from hometown for a very long time, but couldn't renew as original DL was in Bangalore.
I considered applying for a fresh license to be a better option than trying to renew other state expired license after coming back to Bangalore.

There are some updates on KA51 RTO. They have started conducting DL tests in old Arakere campus (Google Maps Link) from December 1st.
At present, they are conducting driving tests for both four wheeler and two wheeler on the opposite road to RTO, which is easier to manage than on Huskur road track with sensors and signals.

I was not aware about this recent change and went to Huskur Road RTO for driving test, which is 15 minutes drive from home. Thankfully, I was early and managed to reach Arakere road RTO on designated time.
The earlier plan was to finish four wheeler test and come home and take bike for two wheeler test, but now with this venue change, I had to rent a 2 wheeler from one driving school person.
The four wheeler test was to go straight for 200 meters and take a U-turn and come back.
The inspector left while I was trying to rent a bike for two wheeler test. I approached him in office and he came outside asking me to bring bike inside RTO campus and take a round of RTO building.

For smart card cost, i.e. Rs 59.05/-, cash is not accepted. They ask you to scan the screen and make payment through any digital payment system (Google-Pay, PhonePe etc.).
Apart from papers mentioned in the earlier posts, Please don't forget to carry printouts of pre-filled application form for both LL and DL.
Downloading it from Parivahan website is confusing. I am sharing the screenshots for reference. The screenshots are on Firefox browser.

After state selection, Select "Print Application Forms".

Press cancel on popup from next page on selecting "Application Form (pre filled)" and wait for few seconds. It will open pre-filled form in pdf format in a new tab.

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

Hi Guys,
My prehistoric driving license from Kolkata has come to an end with the expiry date marked on my 50th birthday. I tried to renew my license online on the Sarathi website, but it seemed that the license is too old to hold in the online repository and a backlog entry is required.

Since I do not have plans to travel from Bangalore to Kolkata in the recent future, I opted to let that go and apply for a fresh license from Bangalore itself.

I already had a two wheeler license, which I obtained from Chennai in the year 2008 and it was about to expire too, so I applied in the Sarathi website for address change and DL renewal both at once and I obtained both of them.

Only one catch is that I had to visit the General Hospital at K R Puram and obtained a fit certificate on the Form A1, which is mandatory for anyone applying for renewal or fresh DL of the age of over 40 years.

It goes without saying that I had to pay some amount to get this done.

Still I could bargain with myself the cost of going through an agency or a driving school versus going by myself through online.

The process overall was pretty smooth, but first time I was getting an error while paying the fees. That made me wait and tested my persistence for about a couple of months. After this on one of my calls to the customer support helpdesk of Parivahan, I was guided how to cancel my current application and submit a fresh application instead. I did that and this time the fees also was accepted and I was able to submit the application.

It took another couple of months, but the renewed two wheeler license was delivered to my apartment doorstep. This license has validity till my age of 60 years, so a big sigh of relief.

Next I applied for the Learner License as the first step utilizing the same Form A1, duly filled and signed by the government doctor and that also was approved in a decent amount of time.

Now came the big problem of applying for the driving license. As soon as I try to apply for one, it asks me to go for the additional endorsement of DL, since I already hold one valid two wheeler license. When I go for this additional endorsement option, it was not showing me any option to add another LMV driving license in it. I visited my nearest RTO which is the KR Puram RTO and the RTO officer was polite enough to introduce me to the NIC technical person, but nothing worked. I raised a trouble ticket with the Sarathi website customer support but they replied stating that they do not have the authority to allow any endorsement and it is at the sole discretion of the state RTOs.

While I kept trying for some option, I happened to stumble over the option of applying for this AEDL without using my Adhaar authentication. The day when I went with this option, it directly asked me for my mobile number and as soon as I entered that, it sent a SMS OTP to my mobile phone and upon entering that, I could see the option of adding LMV as an AEDL under my 2 wheeler DL license.

I applied for the AEDL after furnishing the necessary documents and was ready to face the next challenge in the course. The next challenge was definitely getting a slot booked for appearing for my DL test. I browsed through the internet and came across many videos advising to do this activity starting exactly before the RTO official timing starts, i.e. before 8 AM. Being a late riser by nature and also due to the nature of my work, which is a late night shift for me, it took me a week's time to be able to catch that hour and get hold of a DL test slot in the KR Puram RTO.

After this I was busy rejoicing but forgot about completing the last step of fee payment online without which my application would be incomplete. It was 1st of March and I tried calling RTO without any luck, I raised a trouble ticket with NIC, but thought of visiting the RTO myself to check with them face to face. I drove on my two wheeler to the RTO which is around 8 - 9 kms from my residence only to find that the RTO is closed on 1st of March due to some reason, which was stuck on a colourful pamphlet outside the gate written in Kannada. I couldn't make out a bit of it but understood that the RTO will be open the next day and I need to return back here tomorrow. The worst part of this story was that my wife was accompanying me as she wanted to purchase some items from the KR Puram market.

Anyways, paradise lost is lost, there is no other way to it. I went back on Thursday once again accompanied by my wife once again This time the RTO was open, I went and searched for the NIC technician. He informed that there is indeed some technical problems online, but I can easily deposit the fees in the cash counter. I immediately rushed for the nearest ATM as they accept only cash and nothing else, leaving my wife to take care of the queue.

After I came back with the amount, I could deposit the cash by quoting the application number and they provided me with a receipt, after which it started showing in the Sarathi website as well. The fees was RS 1059/- and I paid exactly RS 1060/-, letting the cashier enjoy that extra RE 1/- for his courtesy.

Coming Tuesday is my DL test and I am pretty excited about it to see what happens there. Any suggestions from you are most welcome and if not please do wish me luck.

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

Hi Guys,
My experience for the driving test in the KR Puram RTO on 7th March, 2023 has completed yesterday.

My appointment was at 12:30 PM and I reached the RTO at around 12:00 PM.

After reaching the RTO, I walked to the reception to enquire about the procedure. The person directed me to room number 4 in ground floor (G4).

In room number 4, they asked me the below items:

1. Purchase a folder and put all your papers inside it.
2. Go to first floor room number 1 to take photographs and biometry (F1).
3. Go to room number 3 on first floor to get the verification signature (F3).
4. Come to room number 1 in ground floor for verifying the online details (G1).

I went to the photography room first and my photo was taken. Next, I went outside to purchase the folder. I purchased it from a shop behind the RTO for RS 10/-. He also provided a string which was quite short in length. He had a punching machine which works only on the right side, the left side does not work. So, I had to punch multiple times and get that done. Once the hole was made, I had to tie all the papers inside the folder using the string.

My wife was accompanying me and she helped me get this done quickly.

Next I came back and went to room number 3 in first floor. At that time, the officer asked me to attach my original two wheeler license in the application, as my application was for additional endorsement of LMV on the license. He advised to purchase a small plastic cover from outside to keep my license in it and then once again use the punching machine to punch a hole on that to tie it back along with my application.

I went out again, had to untie the entire application, purchased the plastic cover for RS 2/- and attached my original DL in the application and came back.

Next I went to the room number 4 which is also called the DL Test room. This time the officer directed me to the corner of the room, where a person was sitting in purple shirt.

I went there and that person asked me to go to first floor room number 1 again. I was surprised and told him that I have already completed the biometrics. He was not agreeing, I asked him to verify in his list and then he could find out my name in the list and asked me to sign against my record.

Next he asked for the original RC, Insurance and Pollution certificates. I provided all of them. He looked at the RC and said it is a duplicate one, give me the original RC. I was surprised as I only have one RC provided to me by Sapphire Honda during my purchase. He refused to accept that it is original and was rubbing his fingers against the chip on the card. Then he asked his colleague if this card is genuine. His colleague examined and said that it is indeed a genuine one.

Now the officer asked me if my car is a manual geared one or automatic. I told it is a manual geared car. He then asked me to take my car and come to the basement of the RTO for the test. I went to the roadside parking where I had parked my car, brought it to the parking and had to wait as a white colour Swift was trying to climb up the steep slope from the basement parking to the ground floor. After several attempts and restarting the ignition, he could make it finally rushing up through the slope.

Another person was before me with a green colour Nexon. Once the Nexon went down, the security asked me to go down the slope to the basement parking. I slowly followed the Nexon and went down.

They asked the Nexon owner to park the vehicle by taking reverse on the parking lot. There were two pillars within which the car needed to be parked. He did everything pretty well, but got stuck in the same place like the Swift while trying to climb up the slope to reach to the ground floor from basement. He also could finally rush through after several attempts.

There was another RTO officer on full uniform (khaki) he asked me to come out of the car and asked me to tell my name. After that he asked me to read a number from the form. I said I need reading glasses to read, he agreed and I put on my reading glasses and read the number quickly.

He then asked me to take reverse, go back and then take right towards the long parking lot and go till the end. After that he asked me to take reverse and come back to him and park my car within the same pillars as the Nexon was before.

I did that, while taking reverse and turning left, it was not accurate, so I had to go forward and adjust my car to be able to park it within the pillars perfectly while coming back in reverse gear.

Next the officer asked me to go straight stop the car on the start of the elevation, keeping the rear wheels on the plane surface while the front wheels on the slope. I went and parked the car in that position waiting for the next instructions. He then waved his hands asking me to go ahead and climb up the slope. I did the half clutch - brake and accelerator combination and slowly climbed up the slope with my car. After climbing up, the security instructed me to move out of the RTO, park the car on the roadside again and then come back to meet the officer.

There was too much crowd outside with school buses plying through the narrow lane and lot of cars waiting on the opposite side for the buses. Somehow I managed to take a right turn and park my car in one of the empty slots besides the road.

After coming back, the officer asked me to go to the room number 4 in ground floor once again (G4). I went there and found the Nexon owner with an envelope in his hand. I asked him and he said that we need to purchase one put the necessary stamps on it and then write our own address and hand it over to the RTO officer. First I went inside the room and at this time the purple shirt person asked me to wait outside. He was not ready to hear to any queries. So, I came out along with my wife and sat on the waiting chairs outside the room.

I went out to purchase the envelope, but couldn't find it on the backside shop and neither in the other side shop near to the RTO. Both of them said that the envelopes are exhausted, so they do not have stock now. I thought to take my car to the post office in that case and came back to discuss with my wife. My wife asked me to wait there and she wanted to make a try to get the envelopes and see if it is possible. She went out and came back after almost 15 - 20 minutes. She said after searching all the shops she found one shop who was asking RS 80/- for the envelope and the stamps. She kept looking for other options and finally found another shop who had the envelope which he charged RS 10/- and also gave RS 30/- stamps after hearing that our residence is in Mahadevapura. The person charged Rs 50/- for this which was somewhat reasonable and she came back with the envelope and stamps on it.

After a while I found that the Nexon owner went inside the room, so we followed him and kept watching from outside the door. The officer on uniform and the Nexon owner was having a hot conversation, most probably on improving his driving skills and finally I could hear the officer asked him from which state he belongs to. The person said Bihar. Then the officer said how come you came on such a Bermuda to the RTO, is this how you go for any official work?

I patiently waited and later this officer asked me to come and said I have passed the test. He said it will take a month's time to get the license since there is a shortage of plastic cards supply in Karnataka. He stapled the envelope to my application and also helped me in setting up my mParivahan app with my virtual driving license so that I can show the same to the police, if asked, during this period.

We left the RTO in a feeling of contentment to have been able to complete this by ourselves without the help of any driving school or agents.

Please remember to have these apart from the regular documentation while going for the driving test.

1. A folder cover to put all the documents together.
2. A small plastic cover to attach DL incase of AEDL availed.
3. An envelope appropriately stamped and your residential address clearly written on it.
4. A pen and some cash to be able to pay incase something is required. RTO does not have the QR code for GPay, PhonePay, etc.
5. Install the mParivahan app and update your DL / RC details in the app.

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

Thank you all for the detailed explanation of the process, it is very informative.

I have my MCWG (Motorcycle with Gear) license test this Friday at Yeshwanthpur RTO. However I don't have a motorcycle to use (My friends from whom I can borrow a motorcyle either stay very far, or have superbikes which I don't want to use, or have only non-geared scooters). Does anybody have a contact who I can get a motorcyle just for the test? Or is there a shop near Yeshwanthpur RTO from where I can borrow a 2 wheeler?

I know how to ride a motorcyle, used to have one about 10 years back. I lost the license, and haven't bothered to get a duplicate (have filed a e-lost case) because it was from a RTO where my father used to work. I can't go there now.

I am not aware of where to get a motorcycle on hire, all I can tell you is that I went for 2 wheeler driving test at Tambaram RTO, Chennai. I had a gearless activa, but they gave me a two wheeler license for MCWG after passing the test. You can also try that. For my test in Chennai, they asked me to drive the '8' path through two bricks placed in some distance apart and I needed to show the hand signal as well. It was not easy for me as the hand signals are required to be shown by right hand and the Active dropped from the necessary speed as soon as I leave the accelerator making it difficult to maintain the balance. So, finally I ended up not showing the hand signal at all, but could manage that '8' without putting my foot down.

Thanks.. I was told that I will get MCWOG (MotorCycle WithOut Gear) license only if I give test with a gearless vehicle. So, I didn't want to take a risk by using our Activa.

As a general update, I was able to find a driving school shop in the ground floor of Yeshwanthpur RTO building and get a bike (they have a splendor, which all applicants used one after other) from them. They put your papers in their file folder, and a driving school stamp on your application so that you don't have to get the vehicle papers (which you have to do if you're going on your own) in your folder. However, it is a fairly easy process if you can get a vehicle yourself (You need RC, Insurance, PUC of the vehicle). You will have to go in the morning (before 12, I think) to the RTO office (location) to get your photo taken (counter 6) and application scrutinized (counter 8). Then you have to go to the RTO testing track in the afternoon (the inspectors come at 2 pm) (track is pretty far away from the office, and shared with Rajajinagar RTO (location)) for the test. The test is easy, it is an S shaped curve followed by figure of 8. It is however slightly narrow, so you should practice taking S and 8 curves in a narrow space. Two ladies fell from their scooter when I was there. But it is not too difficult, a few old ladies were able to handle it easily on their scooters. My license was updated with additional endorsement on the next day. I'm told the card will be delayed due to shortage of cards.

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

I completed the process of obtaining my driving licence at KA-51 RTO yesterday. I followed this thread to complete the process and for the most part it worked well. However, unlike some other members on this forum, my experience wasn't as frictionless. There have been some changes to the process as outlined by other members in previous posts and I have listed them below:

1. Driving tests have resumed at Huskur Road campus and one need not go to Arekere office at all. All formalities of document verification, capturing biometric details and undergoing driving tests can be completed at Huskur Road campus
2. You don't need to bring a self-addressed envelope with postal stamps of certain denomination affixed. Postal cost has been added to the licence fee
3. You don't need a printout of learner licence form. Print out of learner licence is needed instead
4. You don't need to pay for smart card separately as that cost has been added to licence fee as well

As for the driving test, the test track for cars has been configured to test for following skills:
1. Incline parking without skidding
2. Reverse parallel parking
3. Tight '8'
4. Tight cornering
5. Reverse 'S'

The test track for cars is little tricky and areas marked for parallel parking and reverse 'S' are little tight in my opinion. I felt that attempting driving test in a hatchback is advisable over a sedan.

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

I have been trying to get driving license for my wife (without using agents). She got her Learner License in February . Now when we paid the fees for Driving test, and tried to get a slot, there are no driving test slots available at KA03 (Kasturi Nagar) RTO for 7 days. What time do the new driving slots open up for next day? Aany idea would help. Is it only in Bangalore/ Karnataka or is it same all situation over India? Couple of years back, I had got my DL test slot very easily. Or is it due to any policy change by new government of Karnataka?

Any further updates on the actual KA driving test? Need to take son for his first (and hopefully only) attempt. Planning to take our automatic Q3. Any issues with this?

Concluding my post about getting my driving license from KR Puram RTO. I kept checking the status of my application, which was crawling even slower than a tortoise, it finally came to the dispatch department, after which it did not move at all for 1 and a half months. So, after waiting patiently and following all YouTube and Quora suggestions, I gave up my patience and finally called the RTO to enquire about the license. After calling several times, finally they connected me to someone who seemed to be from the right department. He asked me my application number and date of birth. After providing the same, he checked for 5 minutes and then said - "Oh Sir! Your license is indeed ready, but the office staffs are all busy with election duty that is the reason there is a delay in dispatch of your card. We will dispatch it by tomorrow and it should reach you by day after tomorrow." Hearing this, I was quite delighted and thanked the person and dropped the call.

After two days my doorbell on my flat rang. I opened the door to find some person (who does not appear to be a postal worker) handed over to me a closed envelope. To my surprise, it was not the one which I had submitted along with my application. It was another envelope. This one neither had any address written on it. The envelope had a transparent part covered with the celophin paper. The license was kept in that in such a way so that everyone would be able to read the address part and that must have did the trick to reach to it's right recipient. Hurray, finally I was the proud owner of the driving license endorsed for both 4 as well as 2 wheeler.

Were you able to get the slot? We have been trying for more than a month but always get the message saying 'All slots booked for the next 30 days'. I try to book the slot at 8.30 AM every day as that is when they open the booking. No luck so far.

Yes, i was able to book the slot on 18th June at about 4:30 AM, while returning from Airport in a cab. Appointment was for today morning 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM slot, roughly a month later from booking date.

RTO officer gave preference to driving school candidates, and my wife could take test at 1:30 PM only. It was a long agonising wait, unfair to those going without driving school. Good thing is that she passed the test!!

Re: How to get a Driving Licence in Bangalore without agents

Hi All,
I have applied for driving license at KR Puram RTO. I have completed online activities for learner license and now after one month, I have got appointment for driving test. As I was going through steps mentioned in this thread, there are changes regularly in the process at RTO. Did anyone gone through Driving test recently? Few queries I have is
1. My test includes LMV and MCWG, I can only get one vehicle, how can we arrange for second vehicle ( car or bike)?
2. Is it mandatory to have L board on the vehicle?
3. Do they have proper track for test like in Yelahanka or E-city?
In general you current experience would have me with preparation.

Thanks in advance

Hello Indranil,

I wanted to check with you about your DL test experience at KRPuram RTO. I too have applied directly by myself on parivaahan portal, and would like to know if you had do bribe people when you went for the DL test.

Can you also let me know of any gotchas at the RTO.

Can you also let me know of any gotchas at the RTO.
Hi Vamshi,
I have not paid any bribe in the KR Puram RTO. I would advise you not even to indulge into such discussions. Be calm and be ready to be harassed by some of the officers there. Some officers are really good, but not everyone unfortunately. Concentrate on your driving skills and be cooperative and humble with everyone there.

Go earlier than your slot timings, so that you can be well prepared for whatever they ask. Carry a RS 45/- stamped envelope along with you, because they ask to attach that in the folder. Also, purchase a folder from the nearby shop, as they will ask to put everything in a folder and tie it. Rest all process is easy, expect somewhere around 2 - 3 hours depending on which day your slot is, for example weekend rush could be more than weekdays.

Lastly, go properly dressed, i.e. don't wear sorts or extremely colourful shirts / t-shirts, your overall appearance will matter to them.

All the very best for your test, keep us posted on the results and experience, once you return.
